Hey there! I know I say this for basically every video, but I’m sorry that this video took so long! However, it does mean I was able to get it out in time for Your Turn to Die’s 5th anniversary, so that’s a plus!

Your Turn to Die is one of my favorite games of all time, and the characters are one of the reasons why! Despite the fact that characters drop like flies, each of them manages to stand out and be memorable even to this day? How is the game able to do something like this? Well, in this video, I think I’ve just found the answer!

There is not a single character in this game that I dislike. Not a single one. Even characters who are less present like Miley or Kugie have enough intrigue to make me appreciate them. I've never seen a cast be so enjoyable as Yttd's, and I doubt I ever will. Who could forget Kanna hiding some pudding under her "hat"? Or Kai chasing Reko while telling her scary stories? Even some of the less-developed characters have SOME depth to them. If Anzu survives up to the banquet, you can speak to her, to which you'll learn that she doesn't like thinking about the future because of how terrifying it can be, which I find to be very relatable.

Yeah. I don't get the hate surrounding her honestly, and although I don't feel too strongly about her, I don't dislike her.

I'm surprised you did not mention character design once. Each character is so masterfully designed to be so memorable that they'll never leave your mind.

That IS true. The unique oddities for each character plus their bright popart-ish colors really make the gang stand out

On that note it reminds me of a tweet that nankidai pixelated as to not to spoil who is in the picture. Iirc it was one of the battle cg for maple of one of the other monsters and like in the discussions you see the character portraits. And because character has such a distinct design I was immediately able to tell who is in the picture lmaooo

The most notable thing about yttd cast is how human they are. And how fleshed out their personality without exposition dialogue. They are vivid enough to be memorable, but complex enough to not be stencils. Gin is not a child from a difficult family, but an odd, "irregular" kid that does care for about not seeing others sad more than himself; his father being "burden" further strenghtening in him the desire not to be one. Qtaro is simple but feels responsibility about those dear to him, conflicting with survival instincts and even serving as excuse justifying it at times. Little details about Keiji betray his demons without him even giving then lengthy explanation: restlessness, self loathing, even his blonde hair, (being in japan a sign of rebellion against the law/system). And Nao... Many claim Nao is in love with mishima and ir reko. But if you watch her evil ending, you see her real colors. She doesnt just show affection: she LATCHES onto people and protects them as her own shelter, using them without realizing it: as she's incapable of not coexisting. She clings to someone like a rock to hold onto in a storm, and in a symbiotic relationship, she latches from "strong" person to another immediately when she loses her partner. She's willing to take pain and blame just so her 'rock' stays stable. This cast is defined by their weaknesses - and each has different colour. I love it.

@@sweetpea7490 There has been little more about Kai, but given strict, unjust raising, he must've been someone deeply convinced that he'll never experience being loved, instead, turning being "useful" and needed into his joy. Seeing others safe and happy put smile on his face, despite being devoid of ability to openly laugh or relax. Was Sei's pitiful end something to make him truly question the organisation, was finding "place he is welcome in" in Chidouins' house final reason he acted and rebelled? He was starved for affection but unable to request it, so those who gave it to him he owed highest devotion.

i love danganropa and yttd, but i think yttd is really good at having a memorable cast in a short time by reminding you of the character’s existence long after they’re dead. mishima is an excellent example, as his presence is still felt despite him being the first dead, and this is due to nao having a close connection to him. i also believe yttd is great at grief and reactions to death. while danganronpa has more death, the characters act like it’s another tuesday after a few hours. i don’t wanna compare a lot, as both have good and bad aspects, but still. yttd is great at this stuff

My favourite thing about the yttd characters is how every and each one has their fair share of flaws that get to "shine". They aren't something that is mentioned once and never again. The same goes to the positives aspects

Something else I love is that technically in the story all the deaths are canon no matter what you choose. Even the one where Nao and Sara escape, that probably happened in th simulations. And the one where Safalin erases Joe.

YTTD truly is an incredible game, a diverse and interesting cast. A great story with twists and turns, as well as consequence for choices you might’ve made during the story. It’s amazing how real the characters not only feel but also how well they bounce off each other.

I really enjoyed this video! But your placement of the different Dummies at the Banquet made it seem like the Shin/Kanna choice affects it, but it legit does not matter. Ranmaru dies on any route if you fail the charge minigame, and Mai dies on any route if you fail the Final Maple Fight. I find it kinda funny that Nao's death was never once mentioned throughout the video, because, honestly, she gets screwed over. She is the only character who just... disappears after her death, with nobody really particularly caring, even though she was very close to Sara and Reko. It makes me think that Nao's death might become important in 3-2, because so far, it's just been underwhelming, to say the least.

Thanks for the heads up! I thought Ranmaru's life depended on the route you took, but it turns out I was wrong. And I agree with Nao. She really gets the short end of the stick and only really serves to prop up Mishima and Reko. I feel like her fondess event with Kai helped her though.

I played YTTD earlier this summer and really liked it, I knew it had branching paths but I only played one time through. Only now am I realizing how different the paths actually are

0:50-0:58 Weirdly, Danganronpa has the opposite issue. The characters killed off tend to be more interesting and developed than the survivors.

I think that has to do with the fact that the trials they are in give them very defining moments and probably a backstory that the survivors dont get

I found this game after a friend of mine mentioned a character that wore a beanie like me, since then I’d gotten addicted to the game. I have 20 hours between only chapters 1-2a (I’m still completing 2b) but the characters are extremely fleshed out and so different. I expected the game to just be some indie game that I wouldn’t play long but I actually ended up liking it more than omori since even though the game isn’t finished it has better characters that are more fleshed out (just with basic personality I’m not talking about mental health and how things are dealt with) in my opinion. I easily got attatched to every character I’ve met so far and it’s the only game other than the persona franchise that I’ve been careful about avoiding spoilers. I was spoiled for Midori but I still don’t know much about him and Sou’s relationship since sou had been visibly upset when he saw him on Kai’s laptop

I feel like these characters are only memorable because of the dolls plotline. If it wasn't for the AI copies of characters, I think a lot more would be forgettable. It also helps that there is a smaller cast. But yeah, it is a unique situation that the characters are hard to forget, save for Mishima, Joe, Hayasaka, and pretty much all of the other chapter 3 doll people besides Hinako and Ranmaru. I still think Danganronpa did it better though
