Thanks for the breakdown, wing chun has definitely gotten a bad rap from the videos being shown lately! I believe it is the ignorance of someone to dis it without ever experiencing the training! Sifu Fong is the real deal, Sifu Adam is also the real deal! I am a student of Sifu Fong, he is 74 right now still teaching. I know his back ground, he is a fighter, fought on the rooftops in Hong Kong before coming to America, and has a similar story to that of Sigung Bruce Lee! Sifu Fong has full instructorship in Judo, Kali, Muy Thai, BJJ, JKD/Jun Fan and list goes on! So when these keyboard warriors start talking smack against Sifu, I know it’s just words. Every once in a while I’ll tell these keyboard warriors to go to the school and challenge him and always crickets after that! Here’s a story from the school….I started May 5th 1999 with Sifu, a friend told me there’s a school down the road that teaches Bruce Lee style martial arts and they have wooden dummies you should go check it out! So I went, best decision I’ve ever made. So In the beginning we learned the basic drills and first form you know the regular stuff then about six months in before the class started we put down the matts. I figured we are having a safer cushion for training and yes that’s true, but what really went on is how to apply Wing Chun to grappling and take downs and ground control! We did wing chun grappling and applying wing chun on the ground! For years this went on and I can honestly say it has changed the way I look at Wing Chun, it opened my eyes to more than just standing attacks, it showed me you must be a way more rounded fighter than just pak sao, lop sao, sot sao, deem jern, Wong jern. You’re not always facing a Wing Chun guy, you could be up against a grappler, wrestler, or just a person that knows nothing but could be tough as nails. Sifu is amazing, but you should have been there 20 years ago he was phenomenal! Thanks again for sharing the breakdown 🙏🏻

Glove up if you want, the rest of us are going to simply defend ourselves. So, how can that be accomplished without real application? Although not real situation, competition does provide experience, environment, confidence, etc. I get training in your own element/ school is necessary, but where is the uncomfortable reality of different individuals, actual attack, timing distance? As a competitor and street survivor, can't really relate to being able to perform without actual experience. Truly would like to hear your position on this.

I'm glad you used the word "showcasing" for Francis Fong's video -- that's exactly what it is. And there's nothing wrong with that. Every art -- even the hard core ones -- does that. That's how you inspire new students. That's how you demonstrate concepts. That's how you relax and enjoy the art. Francis Fong has the best hands I've ever scene and I've learned a ton from Kevin Lee's vids. If the viewer is stupid enough to villify it as an unrealistic technique or whatever, then that is on the viewer. Not everyone is going to get Wing Chun -- that's ok.

Well said sir, drills are to teach muscle memory, in a real fight a good Wing Chun exponent would try to finish the fight with one move! ! am 69 now and started Wing Chun under Sifu Joseph Cheng in the UK as a 16 yr old, I did it for 15yrs and then trained in TKD up to 3rd dan. They say when presented with danger in a real fight you automatically return to the first art you trained in. I am blessed in the fact I have only had to defend myself once in all this time and it was 5yrs after I finished Wing Chun(The school closed in my town in northern England) For some reason a guy twice my size attacked me, he obviously was not trained as he charged at me and threw a right hook haymaker, seeing it coming I stepped forward to enable my bodyweight to work for me at the same time blocking his punch with a left arm tan sau whilst twisting my right hip punched him at the same time utilising the upward twist at the end of the punch that sifu Cheng drilled into us. I caught him on the cheekbone and I swear to god he stopped dead, took three steps back and fell down, as he tried to rise his cheekbone immediately swelled up to the size of a chickens egg and he did not come at me again, I am not proud of this as I believe I broke his cheekbone but it was something I had little choice in, My point is I had been drilled in this movement thousands of times and when I needed it, it worked, one move with several of my bodyparts involved in synchronicity, Pure Wing Chun!

To me, Wing Chun is a system, MMA is a collection of techniques. Definitely not saying MMA doesn't work, it does. But if you don't train like you are actually gonna fight, then it becomes Krav Maga. No hate on Krav Maga, I think it can be excellent. Both, being a collection of things means that one piece doesn't build on another, so you can pick and chose to a certain extent what you want. Wing Chun is a system, one part builds on another. If you don't have a good understanding, grasp and skill in siu lim tau, you will not get much out of the wooden dummy. Meaning, as Dominic says here, you gotta put in the time. Its somewhat akin to just using an app on your app, vs being able to build one. Not related but true; good luck practicing mma to a level it needs to be done at, over 60+ years old. Of course there are those who can, but not most. Whereas most could still do wing chun at that age, effectively. In some ways better than a young person, if the older person has any inkling who they are, what they can and cannot do.

Wing Chun is a beautiful and devastating art and doesn't deserve the attacks it gets by the ignorant. I think it's true that the reason for this is the show casing, in that, it doesn't appeal to the lower levels of fighting appreciation you have in the MMA fraternity. However, Wing Chun students do need to practise their skills against NON Wing Chun opponents who are trying to hit them, in order to properly hone those skills for fighting. Something is missing in modern Wing Chun training as with most Martial Arts, today.

I don't think that any martial artist has to train against other styles to be effective : In past centuries, you couldn't connect with other martial schools as easily as nowdays but for tough fights when you could be severely damaged. Fighting techniques were secretely taught because its particular design was supposed to give you an advantage against an opponent who didn't know your style. When Wing Chun was first introduced in the western society, it was so new that it made you almost invicible in any random encounter when your regular bully tried to use a boxing like fighting style. Then, Wing Chun books and videos made people able to find counter tactics to effectively challenge the Wing Chun Guys. Your style had to be good enough to dominate any opponent whatever style he practiced. A Karate fighter, a Wing Chun fighter is supposed to fight victoriously against a western or chinese boxer just like the Gracie did with their Brazillian Jiu Jitsu.

Tik Tok is even worse than RU-vid with the short videos. Everything is dumbed down and is more for entertainment value than for education purposes. I love the videos of both Francis Fong and Adam Chan, but I've been training wing chun for 7 years, not your typical outside viewer. I also agree with you that effective wing chun won't look like wing chun in an actually fight. You'll see the main concepts of the art: occupying the opponent's center, getting your opponent off-balance, keeping your elbows down, and attacking the opponent's core vs chasing hands (ie. what the wooden dummy teaches you). I think the end of the Chum Kiu form with the pivot and pressing hand is also the anti-grappling concept. The pressing hand can just as easily be a jum sau to control the opponents core/head. Sometimes you need to add footwork depending on how aggressive the shoot is.

You nailed it, this is a huge problem in martial arts in general; most self-proclaimed martial artists these days literally don't understand the function of the more old-school development drills, if they've even learned them...and then they talk down to knowledgeable teachers and practitioners based on watching videos they didn't understand.
@geoffreyfletcher6976
@geoffreyfletcher6976 Год назад
Wonderful video, and rightly so what is being said about Wing Chun in this context about the uneducated viewer making inaccurate judgments based solely on what they see in bits and pieces on RU-vid, can be held true with a number of different arts, in which the practitioners themselves both recognize the context of the drills or techniques being demonstrated for educational purposes, and yet know the arts work from having used them for their intended purposes. No art is immune from bad misunderstood PR. One could even do this with MMA, by taking just a short clip of any single drill they do (like punching a speed bag or shadowboxing) and then show a video of an attempted armed robbery, claiming that based upon the video clip, MMA is completely useless in self defense situations and can't teach a person how to fight (because the mugger is not going to just stand there and let you treat them like a speed bag). And while I been involved in martial arts since the late 70s, and have had the opportunities to train in various combative sports methods, when it comes to violent altercations on the street, away from a sporting environment, I will take my more extensive training in traditional battlefield oriented martia arts anyday over combative sport martial arts. No disrespect meant for those who do combative sports if that's their thing, but it's not mine and was never my main goal or focus.

Because they prove themselves under "alive" conditions. They step up and fight. All wing chun ever does is sticky hands, complain, loudmouth eath other, make threats, have silly excuses about "street fighting only" and finally get their behind kicked hard in any serious fight. MMA and pre MMA UFC or Battlecade Extreme turned Wing Chun on their head in seconds. Benetau vs Cancio, Zinoview vs Faulkner, list goes on. And here you still complain and complain. I'm seeing a disturbing trend amongst guys who've moved in the "combatives" direction and away from the "traditional" martial arts. It's a movement that is becoming very reductive in terms of how we interpret Kung Fu forms and application. The idea that kung Fu is 90% wrestling. If people are intending add on Kung Fu techniques to their wrestling that's one thing. The problem is the impetus to retroactively view traditional martial arts through a modern combatives/MMA lens. Anyone who's experienced the chaos of an altercation and can't see the usefulness of a wing Chun or any Kung Fu technique is simply looking at sport fighting and "pressure testing"(which by the way is still in a controlled environment) simply doesn't want to understand context.

MMA is a brand. MMA is ONLY ever just BJJ, wrestling, boxing, and kickboxing. Sure there are outliers like Machida who uses Karate and Rousey who uses Judo but more often than not MMA has become a style in and of itself. With that being said, knives, eye gouging, biting, nut shots, using improvised weapons, slamming someone on their head, slamming someone's head on the mat etc. isn't in MMA, does that mean they're ineffective? According to your statement yes, because MMA fighters don't use them. Then you'll say "of course not, there's rules". Bingo, need I say more? Also the Gracies covered videos where BJJ lost on the street. So what now? I'll tell you what: Efficacy is dependent on the individual, the style merely provides techniques, if you or everyone else is unable to make sense of said techniques, then that is due to your inability to grasp said fighting style. No more, no less, and that's facts.

@@MarcosAG90 TLDR: if MMA fights had surprise opponents and 10 second rounds, you would see a lot of what looks like wing chun, even if the moves are sourced from other arts. Well you actually do see some fighters like Belfort, Machida, Jones, or Foreman in boxing do a lot of wing chun stuff, plus oblique kicks, sweeps, a lot of handfighting and turning opponents as you hit them when punching in corners. But let's put that aside. The reason there is less is that in an mma match, same as in boxing and kickboxing, you can retreat, get on your bike, or give up control without much consequence - and the person you are fighting expects to go back and forth for many rounds. There is no element of surprise either. So that gives you the option to stand back and potshot each other. Despite it prolonging the fight, and making it harder to land shots, thats ok, it's safer and you have 15 minutes. In self defense the attacker stalks you, screens you and tries to overwhelm you. If you interrupt and neutralize his attack, that's a shock, because he screened you already. He typically has an innate time limit, as do you, after which it's not worth it. (Just like a tiger attacking prey only to leave when it doesn't go as planned). More people can come, your bag or child can be left vulnerable, weapons or vehicles or the law can enter, etc. For this reason the fight usually goes forward not backward, and gets into wrestling range where strikes from a clinch can happen. Again, taking it to the ground, which is safe in MMA, is not usually what you want in the street unless it's a sweep or throw where you stay standing. Wing chun has both of these things, though the aim is speed (time limit) and to flurry in a way that works whether you have weapons or not, or time to think or not.

What the un-knowing eye sees and even a high ranking skilled martial artist has never felt well let me put it this way when wing chun was invented in it's early years it wasn't perfect at some point many kung-fu masters from different fighting systems across China gathered together deconstructed the style fixed and altered it's week and lacking parts and rebuilt it this new deadly and efficient way of fighting eventually became illegal to train in unless you were police or military for some years, people that train in external arts and want to evolve their skills into internal arts or delve into a more scientific way of fighting that uses physics ergonomics and a deeper way of dealing with combat problems can eventually find something like wing chun or maybe Tai Chi Chuan and realize how much they were missing wing chun won't make you a devastating human weapon in a short period of time like boxing Muay Thai or jiu-jitsu may and without the foundation developed over years even decades under your feet Wing Chun techniques seem like they don't work I believe this is were the confusion comes from wing chun is a truly powerful and devastating way of dealing with violence but it takes time patience and dedication to perform correctly

Unfortunately there are only a few very effective fighting styles. Traditional Martial Arts...all of them, are a hobby, understand what you are doing. When people talk about a 'devastating' art I think you're missing the point. Traditional arts offer great benefits,and are beautiful, but if you intend to be a warrior and be as said here..a lot...be 'devastating'...join the army and try to make it into special forces. (not me..just to be clear. Hahaha) It's not the 'art' it's the individual. That's my perspective after 40 years of training.

Martial arts training used to be H A R D, and by that I mean very physically demanding and time consuming. A vast majority of people today don't want to invest that much into something (especially in the west), and also martial arts schools have to make their training safer for the average person to be interested, especially for kids who want to do them (which is part of the reason why I don't think martial arts are for kids). To bring back TMA back to their "glory days" it would have to be exclusive to those WHO DO train hardcore and are more than willing to put in the time and push their bodies past their limits. MMA attracts people like that, TMA more often that not attracts people who wanna do it casually vs seriously. THAT'S the issue first and foremost.

I rarely like to post comments but would like to offer this observation or suggestion both opponents have to hands, elbows, knees, legs, feet and head. They get into a fight and one person is the perceived winner and someone asks what techniques did you use to win the fight that’s win the problem starts. I grew up street fighting which had boxing, tripping, sucker punching, biting, kicking wrestling you name it. I never felt a need to figure out what to call it but only glad to go home alive.

I remember one time during a class, we had our Siu Lim Tao warm up session and I was upfront in front of a mirror. I took that moment as a meditation thing, stared right back into my eyes and kept saying, "I don't care what you do, I'm doing whatever it takes to get to you". That little self-hypnosis stuff must've worked because my chi sau sessions that day were more efficient than usual. I think it was that I finally stopped thinking about the technique, about where there's an opening, about trying to make sure I don't get hit and instead just drive in. Just focus on the goal with simplicity, efficiency, and efficacy.

the problem with that, and I am not a wing chun guy, is style vs style doesn't prove the more effective art for it's actual purpose. For example, BJJ beats judo in a 1 on 1 match 7/10, but judo is better for surviving a bar fight or bouncing than bjj 7/10. A limo beats a mountain bike in a head on head collision, but a mountain bike is much better for getting down a mountain trail or narrow alley though.

I'm not a wing Chun practitioner but, I never disrespect any art, Wing Chun was actually created by a Woman. Since ladies would get grabbed and assaulted by men, she created the art to help women. That's why it's a close-quarter combat art. Men using wing Chun maybe not be as effective as MMA, but a woman who is skilled using wing Chun, is a woman not to be messed with in close quarters. No disrespect at all.

My Wing Chun Si Hings promote the Francis Fong videos a lot and I have tried to watch a few but it is typical just minutes of super fast flippity / floppity chi sao which isn't of interest to me. The wisdom of yraditional maryial arts is aleays given. All techniques are nothing else,as you also say,than the mere alphabet of the sustem,in order to make words....verbs,adjectives,adverbs and sentences...and maybe short essays... All 1,2,3 steps to a defence are nothing else than possibile answers to a A..to B...to C scenario...like answers to "what if ..i am faced with a...b..or c situation".. All martial arts strive for the shortest and quickest stopping , neutralizing technique... Any bad student....iss a good student showing us things to cover next time out of our arsenal.... A bad medical doctor doesnt do away with the science of medicine.... So any bad expinent kf any martial arts system doesnt do away with the martial art itself. A reall fight is not a mma...cause mma is still a ruled agreement. The martial arts...the body self defence arts came out of chaotic situations..where its either you or the other . We only het a glimpse....of what were the martial arts before the humanity...international courts and humane fair treatment rose in the civilised world ...civil being the Rule of Justice of the governing elite and their servants in the name of people....

9 - reasons Wing chun is misunderstood: 1) Few Sifu’s (running a business) want to admit the system’s limitations. Everyone who did wing chun well (namely bruce lee and a few others) figured out you have to mix it with other martial arts concepts for it to truly blossom. It’s great for a foundational martial art but no martial art is the end all be all art. 2) So you (the fighter )have to grow. This is why bruce became a mixed martial artist. The system doesn't account for distance fighting very well. What if you can't "bridge the gap" and have to fight at a distance. For instance, the opponent strikes hard and fast and is tall with long limbs like a larger tie kwando master ?? What then? Adaptation may = Other martial arts. 3) Chi Sao is an insider's game MAINLY for the purpose of cultivating a hand sensitivity attribute. Aside from a few trapping hand concepts THATS IT. It is widely misrepresented by both students and sifus for reasons beyond real fight application. Noo one can SEE your chi sao hand sinsitive attributes improving on youtube. Why would anyone ever put it on film? You can’t master it from videos. You have to have an opponent to do it with to even get it. The common viewer has no idea whats going on. 4) Too many unskilled students have tried to apply chi sao in real fight situations where it didn't work making it seem worthless to viewers. 5) trapping hands is not something done for a prolonged time periods and in multiple variations all in one go but in the movies and on film IT IS SPECTACULARIZED that way. no one is going to stand there, in a real fight, and let you mess around with their hands at a dangerously close distance where reaction time (in your case )is impossible if they were to just strike you. There is an art and science to even pulling it off. 6) Most people who were good at Wing Chun had some abnormal training advantage or insight into the art like IP man( who actually WAS the first bruce lee). He was a real living legend (without hollywood) in his town and other parts of China due to his uncommon hand speed. If you look back at his si lim toa videos and dig deep into some research on him you may find he had prolong sessions of doing the “3 prayers of budda” (an exercise which naturally enhances your reflexes and hand speed). He also had extreme training regiments. As for abnormal training advantage, that large african mma fighter guy - ongwassi (I probably spelled it wrong). He was just big and athletic and the advantage of the ‘chain punching’ (woon lan qwoon) made him a formidable fighter. 7) Wing Chun has many boxing concepts already in it. Hence, as it is known as ‘chinese boxing’. However, those concepts are still not as advanced as a professional boxer's skills. This is why bruce less adapted his art's deficiencies by mixing in some western boxing concepts. That combination made him a formidable fighter (growth). Not adapting the art makes wing chun fighters look ridiculous when they go against mma or boxing guys who use simple boxing techniques to get them out the way. However, if they were to put the boxer in the wing chun guys world like a phone both for instance , they might have a serious problem. 8) Chi Jerk is rarely taught in wing chun. WHY NOT?? 9) Different lineages teach different things. Some things are left out in one lineage that may be present in another, So, if you really want in-depth knowledge into wing chun you may have to study it from multiple lineages. Who has that type of time? In Summ, Proper Understanding of Wing Chun’s advantages and disadvantages may lead to effective Wing Chun Training. Take Care

So studied in boxing, karate and wing-chun. Out of the three WC is the least effective by itself. Meaning if I could only learn 1 martial art WC would not be my choice. Now, if you are looking to teach a discipline to someone for self-defense, who knows no other martial art, like a extreme green person, WC would be the fastest/simplest to teach, and I dont mean that in a bad way. It has technique that is built in "dummy proof" meaning it takes less athleticism or less of a fighting talent to make it useful to the average joe. Once again, it's not a bad thing. Now that being said, the individual who I study WC under was just super dangerous, but he was suuuuuper athletic and new other disciplines and would used them at will.

There's tons of crap Wing Chun out there and much of it doesn't abide by the concepts of the art.. I don't personally think Izzo knows the difference.. No good Wing Chun drills should be doing stupid moves that will never and could never happen in a fight.. The techniques trained can and should be used in a fight.. If you're saying no they shouldn't then you're ignorant of basic sport science.. The basic tools and techniques in the art were intended to be used and that's why they are trained in addition to attribute development... I have seen Izzo playing around with low level Wing Chun people with little experience and he can NOT hold his own let alone blow them away as I have seen many other good people do... Adam Chan is good, there are many who are good and there are many who suck, like Mike Lee... There are good basics and there are crap basics.. If you don't have the basics, understand how to use WIng Chun tools and break and control structure and balance you don't have good Wing Chun and that's that.. Sorry not sorry... Mike Lee has said many times that classical wing chun is not useful in modern fighting as is and must be adapted into conventional grappling or boxing... If you can't use your art in fighting then do another art... If you don't have good basics and can't blow away a low level Wing Chun guy as a 20+ year teacher you suck -- go find another teacher or do another art and STFU.... Adam knows his shit, Mike Doesn't... Another guy you can check out is Keith Mazza, he does drills that are a mile away and uses 5 moves while the other guy stands there with his hand extended -- it's slap happy long range pattycake which is exactly what Wing Chun is not... it's nonsense and no decent drill operates that way.. Classical wing chun drills emphasize instant attack/defense and control while breaking structure and if you are not doing that you are not doing the art...and you probably suck....

I think the real issue is the viewer (like any of us) NOT being able to distinguish someone marketing their Wing Chun school on youtube from somepne showing wing chun in real fight. It’s not really a complex issue. All these sifus are obviously marketing their schools when they show these unrealistic drills. You can't let the comments get to you bro. People who aren’t in it are not going to get it especially when most who are in it do it wrong or don’t understand its limitations. Because of THAT Wing chun has always had a bad rap for execution because the common practitioner simply doesn't do it very well NOR understand it well. Even before youtube this was always an issue. Plus, Bruce lee's execution gave wing chun a reputation that is seldomly lived up to by the average practitioner. So, its like to opposite images of wing chun on film and by the average practitioner that is one reason for confusing everyone.
