In this episode, we explore the Zener diode and the differences between Zener and avalanche action. Both types of Zener diodes are analyzed on a makeshift curve tracer, while we discuss briefly the differences between quantum tunneling and the avalanche effect. Then we go through a basic example of using the Zener as a voltage reference. bit.ly/3GjRepA

This was a good explanation for the arms-length electronics guy. I dabbled with simple circuits as a kid but never developed a full blown interest in electronics experimentation. The Zener diode had always been a mystery to me. It's a very cool and powerful component.

the coolest thing about zener diodes is that the zener effect is aform of quantum tunneling. Mind = blown

I agree. I thought about explaining it, but resorted to an "It's complicated" disclaimer. My brain exploded poking around in the details.

Wow, I wanted to understand this. I'm just a guy who has decided to learn this stuff and I have no background in it what-so-ever. I've not even turned my little soldering iron on yet. I'm looking to understand and get some experience. Absolute basics. Any thoughts of where I can find very simple projects and instruction?

Cool video. What about zeners for ESD or over-current protection?
@AmRadPodcast
@AmRadPodcast 2 года назад
I touched on zeners as voltage level translation in the lightning detector episode recently... not specifically for ESD, but they could be used to limit voltage to, say, an I/O pin. Over-voltage can be accomplished with a zener and SCR, which I'm thinking about in the future. As far as over-current, I suppose you could do with a zener, but is typically done with some transistors monitoring a current shunt. Also a good future topic!

Newb question. Most common zeners are rated for 2 watts like the one when I made a mock linear 5vdc psu using my function gen set to 12vpp and used a led and quarter watt resistor as the load. I had it after the rail to rail cap before the load.

Omg! This caused me to break out my 475 scope and the octopus I built YEARS ago! I have really never fully understood zener diodes and decided to use semiconductors like 7805, 7812 etc,, etc. Thanks for a great explanation! Oh and what does the QC code on your shirt say? I tried to scan it with my phone but no joy.
@AmRadPodcast
@AmRadPodcast 2 года назад
Funny, I tried to get the octopus looking nice on my Rigol, but nothing beats the 465 for displaying x/y stuff like this. Sometimes the old tech is just better for demos.

@@AmRadPodcast 465 is the scope I used to use as an FC in the Navy on board USS Truxtun (CGN-35) for the SPS-48C. I found a 475 a few agos on EBay and it does X/Y pretty well.

What is the purpose of a diode (don't know what type) between an indicator light and ground in a 28V D.C. circuit? My guess is to make the indicator lamp turn on and off sharply rather than fade in and out. Yes? I think it was a Zener diode but not sure.

Are zeners fast enough to protect a MOSFET gate at 100kc/s, from the ripples that occur from ringing at much higher frequencies?
@AmRadPodcast
@AmRadPodcast 2 года назад
Not quite sure as I've never tried them in that application, but I guess it would depend on the capacitance involved in the device. I also assume that this would vary wildly depending on the doping concentration and zener voltage.
@AmRadPodcast
@AmRadPodcast 2 года назад
I just came across a VMOS design today that had a couple of 14V zeners in parallel (each facing opposite directions), shunted to ground in order to protect against overvoltage at the gate. Of course this adds to the input capacitance. The trick in reducing shunt capacitance is to add a small signal diode in series with each zener, but opposite in "polarity" with the zener of each leg.... if you get my meaning. It was a design for several MHz, so I would assume it would be fine at 100kHz as you inquired about.

This was less a "how it works" and more a "how to use". You covered the PN junction but didn't go into much detail on what it's actually doing during zener breakdown aside from saying "quantum tunneling" - more detail at this stage would have been nice.
@robertcruz7898

I thought this video had an appropriate balance of how-it-works vs. how-to-use it for the likely audience. Clearly, you skew from the center of what I expect, but there's only so much that can be covered. A lot of his time was spent on the electrical characteristics (which is an aspect of how it works). I think it is a nice introduction to the subject.
