The irony is that a drunk Cosell is STILL better than most of the broadcasters on tv today.🤔

God I miss those days. How I wish I could just jump through the screen & end up in 1970. My dad always watched MNF religiously. I miss him too. These clips bring back such great memories.

I miss those days. I was in elementary school through the 70s and Tuesday mornings were full of all us fellas talking about the game and imitating Cosells analysis. He was iconic and I knew deep down in his last years there would not be another like him when he would eventually leave. Same with Summeral.

Howard Cosell. A giant in sports broadcasting history. More than 50 years after he vomited, it's still remembered fondly.

Cosell is one of the very few celebrities that could ever get away with being drunk on live TV. He was that great at his job.

This was when MNF was fun. It didn't even matter who was playing, it was an event in itself because of the people who were selected and paired off in the announcer's booth. There are hundreds of stories like this. Putting Cosell with the others who were almost the opposite of Howard was an act of genius.

There’ll never be anything close to MNF like it was through the 70s w/ Howard, Frank Gifford and Dandy Don Meredith. Don poked fun and @ Howard until he would get visibly angry until Frank would bring sanity back and it started over again. It was entertaining, especially if the game stunk. Then they brought in OJ and the bad games were even worse.

All Eagles uniforms look so much better in the past then the crap they've been wearing the last 25 years

What happened was that Leonard Tose, who was the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, treated the trio to vodka Martinis and Couvasier Cognac in the booth. Howard Cosell, who was not feeling well, did the game and threw up on Don Meredith's cowboy boots. He was MIA for the second half of the game. After the game ended, he took a taxi from Philadelphia to New York City, traveling through New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Expressway in which he fell asleep during the ride home.

I thought Cosell was always drunk. That made him fun to watch

I loved it when Cossell was interviewing Ali and Ali was intentionaly trying to take his toupee off. That’s funny shit!

I went to that game with my parents. It was damn cold. I was in the fifth grade at the time, and it was the first night game I ever attended. The Eagles were horrible in those days (they actually won the game by the way) so I can understand why Howard got loaded.

Howard drank every day . Most everyone drank back then. Howard gad his own chair at Toot Schor' s club which was the famous bar in NY where sports stars hung out. Howard was the big attraction and was the star of the bar. He had story after story like no one else

This is news to me. We didn't get cable tv(I'm up here in Canada) at our place until 1974,when I was but 12. Monday Night Football was something I really hadn't seen before(much bigger CFL fan). When I got used to Cosell he came to sound like a rarely changing drone who sometimes would say zany and puzzling things----at least to me and my two younger brothers. I'm not sure we would have realized he was broadcasting this game intoxicated. Meredith was a class act in covering for his falling apart colleague. I do remember the Namath ''interview.'' Hilarious. His true self emerged.

Imagine it was Erin Andrews interviewing Joe Namath! 🤣

One thing is certain, the trademark Davy Crockett cap that Howard wore at all times made him recognizable everywhere he went.

My favorite Howard cosell was when he said Is Van graves is in total control of the fight 1 second later Danny red Lopez knocks him out

When Howard Cosell mentions the pro football war or bidding war he's referring to the AFL/NFL bidding wars that were happening in the mid to late 60's. This is 1970, the first year after the merger forming the AFC & NFC conferences of one unified league.

The Cosell line that got him fired, "He's on the 30, the 40, the 50, look at that monkey run, he's on the 40, the 30....." in reference to Walter Peyton's breaking run in Chicago. Cosell was fired at half time in that game.

Drunk MNF much better than MNF of today. I could watch Joe Namath in this clip everyday.

Keith Jackson was the best!

The Cowboys win that division in the 1970 season and go on to play in Super Bowl 🏈 V against the Baltimore Colts...An assist from Dr. Cosell...Keith Jackson goes on to later become the voice of college football...LEGEND...Dandy Don came to the rescue and juggled the situation very well just like he did offensive formations and evaded defenses as an all-pro QB for the Dallas Cowboys back in the 1960s...

Those were the good ol days.

Because telecasts of all NFL games were blacked out in the cities where they were played, it's my understanding that all "NFL Monday Night Football" games involving either the New York Football Giants or the New York Jets were on the road until after the NFL amended the rule to allow sold-out home games to be locally televised in the cities they were played in. Otherwise, viewers in the huge New York TV market (then home to about seven percent of the nation's population) wouldn't get to watch their team play.

There are MNF broadcasts where you can hear Howard drop the sports talk to sell product. "This'll knock your socks off. Quality. That's why it costs so much. C'mere. I'll give you a taste." Shocking but troo. Cosell moved more narcotics than anyone in sports broadcasting, at a time when sports broadcasters moved more product than anyone on the street. He's a legend.

It seems like, this time around, that the broadcast would have been fairly complete with just Keith Jackson and Don Meredith in the booth. Three's a crowd really makes a mark with this otherwise.

My dad drank at the refinery because things blew up all the time and he had to wade through neck high gasoline to shut off valves. They found his bottle and let him stay.

Does that surprise anyone Howard Cosell always nipped the sherry before games... Howard was the best though Howard Cosell developed athletes. Him and Ali where friends till the end...

I'm not trying to excuse Joe Namath's behavior, but Suzy Kolber or someone on her crew had to have known he was in no shape to be on live national TV but they let him do it anyway.

Nothing new. Cosell was a known drunk on the air that many times was back at the hotel by the two-minute warning sleeping it off as frank had to finish up. Word is howard would call the booth from the hotel as well.

This isn’t the game where Howard was drunk. There was a game where he was blasted and hugging everyone and being a real drunk. This ain’t it.

The fact that Cosell is drunk makes little difference in the quality of his commentary.

Regardless, the play & color commentary were so much better then than the over analyzing & unfunny joking we have to suffer with now.

My favorite Howard Cosell moment was when the beautiful Linda Carter poured champagne over his head and got his toupee wet, and then he got mad at her. She can pour anything she wants to on me even today! I wonder if she realized he wore a toupee. I didn't until much later, but then again, I was really too young back then to think in terms of fake hair.
