The Richard and Sal "lick you balls" stunt really is an early sign of the degradation of the show as actual comedy bits and material into mostly lame spectacle and stunts. It's entertaining in a car crash kind of way but it's not really funny or take any comedic or writing ability. It's just glorified wackpack stunts for the shock value, which Richard and Sal always were and always would remain. Yeah the show had that element present but it over time took over generating actual original comedy bits and featuring legit comedic talent. Howard keeping forever with the winners of the Win John's Job bit (Sal didn't even win, he was a charity hire) instead of using the money to hire legit comedians with legit comedic and writing abilities was an early signal of a blindspot for keeping the show funny. Which would eventually grow into the lameness of the later years of constant staff soap opera over petty, boring feuds, Ronnie's block party melodrama and the overuse of Richard and Sal's lame 9-year-old-level "comedy" phony phone calls, and Sal jumping around in the halls wearing a gary mask or "im so obsessed with howard" schtick.
