This is guide howto install NVIDIA proprietary Linux drivers (manually using .run files) and disable Nouveau driver on Linux Mint 21.3 / 21.2 / 20.3. Linux Kernel 5.15+ is tested.
Currently working NVIDIA drivers are:
560.xx (560.35.03 NFB)
550.xx (550.120)
535.xx (535.183.01)
470.xx (470.256.02)
390.xx (390.157)
340.xx (340.108)
This guide works with NVIDIA GeForce 6/7/8/9/200/300/400/500/600/700/800/900/10/20/30/40 series cards.
This method allow you easily install / test / use different versions of NVIDIA drivers, you can test BETA drivers and switch back to stable.
I use here KDE, but also GNOME and other desktops works very smoothly with latest NVIDIA 560.xx / 550.xx / 535.xx / 525.xx / 470.xx drivers.
I have tested this guide with NVIDIA 470.xx, 535.xx, 550.xx, 560.xx drivers/cards on latest Linux Mint 21.3 / 21.2 and 20.3. Here I use 545.29.06 NFB version of NVIDIA drivers installer, you can always select latest stable version, beta or some other version. If you need patched version, please check following video to see, howto use inttf NVIDIA Patcher Script:

I followed the instruction on your web page. Its very easy to understand. Thank you. There is however a topic you are missing to mention. The Nvidia driver run package has a C Compiler version check for the kernel. If the gcc in the system is of a different version than what was used to compile the linux kernel, then the C compiler version check will fail and kernel modules will not build. So, one has to make sure that gcc in the system is pointing(as its a symlink) to the correct version gcc-11 or gcc-12 or whichever was used to compile the linux kernel. I have kernel 6.4 and it was compiled using gcc-12.3.0 so I had to use "update-alternatives" to assign the correct gcc-12 to be the default. In most distros gcc-11 is default.

You can also always use: export IGNORE_CC_MISMATCH=1 or use --no-cc-version-check parameter or export CC=/path/to/gcc Then run NVIDIA installer normally it should work without errors.

I would just like to say that in Linux Mint and Ubuntu you can install at this moment up to Nvidia Driver 550 with a single command in the terminal, the command is "sudo apt install nvidia-driver-550" of course without the quotations. As the newer drivers become stable I am sure they will also be added to the Ubuntu Repositories for instillation. I believe 555 will be available soon. At the moment at least for me simply installing the recommended 535 driver through Mints Driver Manager works flawlessly with all of my games and software.

Yes, this guide is obviously not for you. This is only for users who want to test, newest beta versions (like now NVIDIA 560.xx), run older versions or even run some certain NVIDIA version. This is universal method to install NVIDIA drivers (any version, even custom patched versions) so this not for one-click men.
@n0viewers409
@n0viewers409 2 месяца назад
@@inttf Well the title specifies 550 as one of the drivers so what I typed definitely does apply especially considering the easy installation method makes it easier everyone sepecially those new to Linux to install or upgrade to an up to date Nvidia Driver in their Linux Mint install. I would also like to add that not to long from now 555 will also be installable through the method I described and then 560 once it is stable, never hurts to show multiple methods especially when a lot of people want Linux to get out of their way and just work so they can work.

I'm using an old AMD notebook (2009) with Nvidia Geforce 8200M. I downloaded from the Nvidia website the one I should use: the 340.108 run driver. Notebook with Linux Mint 21.3 mate (with kernel 5.15.0-122-generic) Brother, how can I install the Nvidia driver? Will it work? Because currently with nouveau the notebook screen flickers when it requires some graphics like watching a video. I've seen videos of people who have had the driver installation fail and their PC is unusable or has a black screen. I read on the Mint forum that it seems like it wouldn't work with OS 21.3 but they weren't sure. Is that possible? What other easy-to-use system could I use in case I mess everything up? Can I install another Linux in that case?

Hi, I had the exact same problem and It took a bit of fiddling but figured out that if this happens, you can just do it through the safe mode terminal by pressing [Shift] while you're booting your machine. After that, I just followed the same steps as the video and it worked fine. Hope this helps if you end up giving it a try again.
@inttf
@inttf Месяц назад
You can boot runlevel 3 using systemctl or changing grub parameter, so safe mode is not needed. Of course works too. I think this original problem might be related to NVIDIA Optimus, it's most common reason see black screen when you have installed drivers successfully.

Blacklist didn't work for me as it is just a sugestion for the system to ignore it but it doesn't delete the actual nouveau. Funny enough you would think that is probably really hard to do that, but in fact it only take with me to delete. i hope that for other people it works too. 1- echo 'install nouveau /bin/false' | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf 2- sudo update-initramfs -u (if it doesn't work install initramfs-tools) 3 - Then you cant hit the systemctl set-default multi-user.target command, reboot and try to install from there again and then obviously hit the systemctl set-default graphical.target command to go back to the system once you're done.
@inttf
@inttf 5 месяцев назад
So if you do following: 1. Add blacklist nouveau to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf 2. Add rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau boot parameter to /etc/default/grub 3. Update grub2 conf: update-grub2 4. Regenerate initramfs image: dracut -q /boot/initrd.img-$(uname -r) $(uname -r) --force And then nouveau is not blacklisted? I have tested this several times and it's working without problems for me.
@Jean-uw4tz
@Jean-uw4tz 5 месяцев назад
@@inttf yeah for what i heard is that sometimes the system might ignore the command since it works as a sugestion and not a order, stubbornness. but after i did this the nouveau was off.
