HowTOs: Lenovo T410 Disassembly and Thermal Compound Replacement

Today is not a software programming tutorial, but more of a hardware tutorial. This tutorial will walk you through the steps to disassemble an IBM Lenovo T410 laptop and apply new thermal compound. Along the way, I will remove the keyboard, hard disk drive, memory modules, RAM cover, heat sink / CPU fan, and palmrest bezel to access the CPU.

just a heads-up, the removal of the top cover goes front to rear and snapping it back start rear, sides, front. fan removal, lift right side first, pull towards right. use toothbrush on the copper fins, that's where dust has the max negative impact (pressurized air + toothbrush would be ideal). the cooler has written the bolts tightening sequence on it. that is important when multiple chips use the same heatsink. good luck, wish all all the best

Hey thanks for the video I have the same laptop It begin to heat a lot up to 95° And most when I connected for charging so I changed the thermal paste the first day went down to 37° using the batery and 60° 65° when conected for charging AND the second day when up to 96° again when charging, AND 65° 67° whe using the baterry so dont know whats wrong now, maybe I have to aply It again the first Time didnt spread the paste as you did on te video just drop It AND then cover It maybe thats the issue dou you have any clue ? Applying fresh thermal paste is one way to get the CPU from overheating. The other is your fan, and you want to make sure that air vent is not being blocked with dust, etc. Also make sure that the fan is spinning. If those two things have been checked and are okay, then something else is happening and may have caused chronic overheating. I also noticed this laptop overheats very easily when there are too many devices hooked up (e.g. SSD and another attached HDD). So there are other factors that are involved and not just thermal paste. I hope this helps. Thanks again for watching.

Great video, thank you! I have a question: is it normal the fan keeps spinning after Windows 10 shutdown? I've noted it takes minutes to entirely shut down, i.e., when it only needs a short press on power button to start Windows instead of a long press (hard shutdown) followed by a short press to effectively start.

The fan should not be spinning after Windows 10 has shut down. Please ensure that you have the latest BIOS update. Also, check your Hardware Mgmt Information and get the latest software drivers for the laptop. For the hard shut down, you have to hold it for a few seconds before it shuts down.

@@TommyNgo-SDEV I did everything... BIOS update to the newer 2013 one, power management drivers etc. The fan spins after shut down for around 2-5 minutes. In the meantime, I can turn on the computer without doing a long press to force physical shutdown and then do a short press to effectively turn it on.

Moreover, I ordered a tube of Arctic MX4 thermal paste. Hopefully it's easy to apply on the cpu and the nvs 3100m gpu.

I have this laptop and it's so fast. Last days they laptop is so hot and see You to repair, but after service is same. I reainstal windows and it's frezze but wifi doesn't work, reinstall drivers, clean the wifi Target, chance wifi Target and same. clean into a fan i found dirty. Ando wifi not working :( Sorry i'm no speak English !

Thanks for watching. Changing the thermal paste helped in getting the temperature down from 115°C to 42°C. It helps a lot if you clean your laptop at least every 2 to 3 years.

How is the keyboard not going in? The keyboard slides in with ease. You didn't remove the CPU, and so how it's not booting into BIOS? You must have fried the electronic component prior/during disassembly.

I did it yesterday - Hell job! Sadist Engineers design this so you damage the machine when trying that must be GULAGs assembling those machines... with too many tricks to make it almost impossible - ... dis gusting idle temperature now down by 10 deg Celsius irreversible heart damage for me...

I think if Lenovo had a handbook of how things were assembled, then it would be easier. But like anything, don't use too much force, it will break.

yeah.....clean all the dust and crud from the cooling fan......right on top of the computer....not too bright....

At least you are smarter by watching this video. But if you watch the video carefully, I didn't get any dust on the computer. I was using a Q-tip with alcohol.
