Hoya krohniana 'super eskimo' care and propagation

In this video I share with you the care and propagation of the Hoya Krohniana Silver and also controversially named ‘super eskimo’. This is the hoya version of the philodendron brandtianum, in that it has silver specks on the leaves that is so easy on the eyes. It’s a very easy to care for hoya (so long as you can give it very good light and never overwater) and one that propagates so well. I give you an update at the end of the propagation to show you how the cuttings and the parent plant did.

I did not know Eskimo has derogatory meaning either !! I think it’s just us in Asia being so far away from any Inuit community. Don’t feel bad Sean! I think this is a great information for all of us viewers especially from Asia ! :)

Your apology and discussion is so, so appreciated. I imagine this might be an older variety of hoya when the term was still commonly used with less regard for the people it describes and their feelings on it. Personally, I feel weird calling a plant by a term that describes people of a certain ethnical background anyway, and I'm glad to have seen this plant showcased newly as 'Super Silver', which I'll be using from now on, and maybe you'd like to as well.

Your video was very nice and informative. I really enjoyed it. I have had Hoya plants for a while but I recently purchased this one. It’s so alarming to me that someone would take offense to the word Eskimo. I didn’t know that it would be racist and I have always been a person who respects diversity and also cultures. I am 62 years young but never used that term in a racist way. I do believe there is a lot of hate in this world right now towards all races and it’s a shame. I only wish there be peace on earth. I preach kindness all the time even at the end of each of my RU-vid video. Thanks for your tutorial.

Oh wow, I never knew the word eskimo is derogatory at all, it's the first time I've heard this. I've did a bit of googling and the results were fascinating. Sadly, in my part of non-English speaking Europe, the term has been adopted as a neologism and it is imbedded in the language as the sole word to describe the populace, and, due to the geographical distance, I highly doubt that the names of each tribe or population from different areas would become commonplace to replace it. Now, in regards to the plant, the video was amazing, I saw one of these available in a store and had to learn more about it, to make up my mind if I'm going to get one or not, so thank you for a great video.

That's an interesting story behind the name of this hoya. Here in Kyrgyzstan we call it Eskimo because of the name of ice cream we have here) sure we know about the inuits but this is not the reason why we call this hoya like that. Thank you for making yourself more aware of the issues behind the existing name. Being more aware of these issues and working to making them better will help our hobby be more inclusive. Some common names have so much baggage that come with them, especially when it comes to cultivars. This particular one isn't the only one out there - a certain Tradescantia comes to mind, a certain Dieffenbachia as well. If they must be used, I'd much prefer that they be descriptive. I think it'd be cool if this variety were called something like 'Frost' or 'Ghost'.

I understand why some people think the term Eskimo might be offensive, but it's really not. It's the same as "indigenous people" or "North American". Eskimo just refers to the northernmost North American indigenous tribes. It typically includes Inuit, Inupiat, Yupik, Aleut, etc etc. It's important to use courteous language, but it's also important to understand where words come from. 🙂
@onlyplants
@onlyplants Год назад
Thank you for this clarification. It can be confusing and I guess different people have different interpretations…

Personally for me, a word is not offensive, but the way that it is said can be. It really depends on the context, the tone, and the person saying it.

@onlyplants
@onlyplants 2 года назад
New leaves will always be less plump, but should plump up over time. I would let it dry out completely before watering it. Or in my case I actually water it lightly every day
@carolgraham7691
@carolgraham7691 2 года назад
I examined the soil..and the reason the plant wasn't plumping up enough was because the root development was not great..so I took out of too wet soil and too much soil for size of plant...put into chunky soil into airy pot..then, placed into one of my prop boxes with high humidity..now the leaves have recovered and leaves are very plump again. Yeah! .

Dear Sean, thank you for this impressive video. I am sure that you have the Hoya Curtisii in your collection. Can you please compare those two - the Curtisii and Krohniana? In every possible aspect - the size of the leaves, the growing speed, the blooming time, etc... Here in USA the price for Krohniana is 5 to 10 times higher than for Curtisii. You said, your Krohniana is somehow similar to Lacunosa. Well, I had a difficult time for the adaptation of Lacunosa to my growing conditions. And at the same time my Curtisii was growing like a weed. And the ESKIMO in MANY languages means just the name of old fashioned ICE CREAM.

That was amazing. I never knew that either. It's so hard to be free and talk in today's world. Everything offends everyone. Those values, traditions are all out the window and every being for themself. We need to be better.

Hi, thank you for the useful video! I have one question. Some of the joints and leaves of my hoya are too weak and flabby, so they fall off very easily even with a soft touch. Others seem very robust and firm. Now some of my hoyas have to stand leafless stems to get back the beautiful look they had before. This makes me sad. Do you know why this happens and how to care? I don't think it's the root problem because the leaves that fall off are random, like some of them are closer to the root while others are in the middle or so. Thank you.
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
I would first rule out pests as a possibility. The next could be care issue - light, watering, fertilizing. But as a rule of thumb the best way to rescue hoyas is to propagate them and start over. They are much stronger plants like this.

Nope but you need a section of the main stem 😀 they can root with just the leaf but will not put out a new vine 😀

So I have a pretty silly question.😬 how do you go about giving indirect sunlight with a grow light?
@onlyplants

Depends on the watts... I dont know how to measure light I go by instincts usually ahha.

in my place, indirect sunlight usually going between 2500-3500 lux, and up to 30k lux under the sunny day's direct sunlight. and my 18watt grow light just give me around 1500-2000 lux. So, to replicate indirect sunlight, I need 2 or more 18watt grow light. (I'm using androids app for the light meter, just measure the light outside, and replicate it inside basically, because it depends on the quality of the light meter and the grow light you use.)
