Hello and welcome to our #30daysofhoya. Today we have another one of my favorites - where have you heard this before?! I don't know. This is Hoya retusa. I absolutely love the way the foliage looks on this one - it reminds me of pine needles. Also, it is a bit reminiscent of Rhipsalis, and I love those as well! It's a very special looking Hoya and very different from some others that you might see. I hope you can get one and I hope this video will help you take care of it a bit. As always, you can find the care sheet in the description. Love your Hoyas and I will see you tomorrow!

this plant is so easy and forgiving on watering, she prefers to have light, the flowers are not spectacular, they are lonely little stars. But this plant is so easy and special hanging down in a basket ! It is very underrated ..... it is like someone you slowly fall in love with !

Same thing happened to me. I used to think it’s not a Hoya that I will be interested in, until I saw it in person. Immediately, I fell in love with it and purchased it right away. :)

Mine is blooming right now. It is the first flower i´ve ever seen on my own Hoyas (i got my first one october last year). Hopefully i bring my collection through the winter and have more flowers next season :D Ah, and my retusa is a bit away from a southfacing window with nighttemperature about 64°F. Greatings from germany

How lucky that your first hoya flower would be on a retusa! I envy you! I think my retusa needs cooler nights too. It is too hot still.

I didn't think this looked like an interesting plant until I saw a very long vining one. It made me think of tumbling stick people. So now it makes me laugh when I see it.

I know it’s an old video… but you are my Hoya guru! Just got a retusa today, the supplier plants all Hoyas in sphagnum moss. Shall I transfer to pon? I have 80% of my collection in pon but never saw retusa in semi-hydro…
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants 9 месяцев назад
I never tried it in inorganic mixes, but I don't see why she wouldn't work. If you don't feel confident, grow her out a bit and then root a cutting in inorganic. That way there will be no stress with the transfer and more chances for success :)

That's a beautiful Hoya! I love the look of it so much I already got it 3 times. It's 3 because the first one died on me, and I am sure I must have done something wrong with the watering. How do you know whether your retusa needs water? With my other Hoya babies I would check the leaf rigidity, but here it's just impossible. Thanks!
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants 3 года назад
I water mine every 6-7 days. My mix dries out so fast, that it's not an issue. I would check the mix if I were you, to see if it is moist or not :)

I have 6 long vines. It was growing compact during winter and early spring and now the vines are very leggy. Is it because of the warm weather? Should I cut back the vines? It’s under a grow light.
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants 4 года назад
I don't think it's the warmth. If they are bothered by high temperatures, they usually drop leaves. I wouldn't cut it just yet unless you can't stand to look at it :D Hoya retusa is good at branching out, just give her some time.

My retusa has leaves have yellow spots in the leaves...kinda looks like zebra pattern on the leaf. Has anyone seen something like that?

Unfortunatly, I haven't. It sounds very odd. Have you checked with some Hoya groups on Facebook? Maybe someone experiences something similar.

Hi! Did you ever figure out what caused your retusa to do this? I'm dealing with the exact same yellow striping on my retusa right now and I'm afraid I either overwatered or overfertilized :(

Unfortunately, I don't know the American market that well. Perhaps Logee's, Steve's Leaves or Planterina might have one. There are also Hoya selling groups on Facebook - Hoya Temptation FB buy/ sell.

Yeh I definitely don’t like the look of it in videos. I am willing to give it a chance. It is a bit uncommon in Australia right now. Prices are still exuberant here . Eg a fresh cutting (no roots) of Australis Liza with one node 2 leaves go for $110 Australian dollars . Lots of people clear out all the Hoya in nursery, then resell and make a profit on facebook. People are going crazy about little plants. Lol it is insanity.
@BasiePlants
@BasiePlants 3 года назад
I am sorry to hear that! I heard the prices are crazy there. I did join one Australian group to see what is availalble and the prices are more reasonable in the group (sometimes). I hope you can find some good deals on them though! I know Philodendron 'Pink Princess' is on the cheap side in Australia whereas here in Europe it is crazy expensive.
@minhja4924
@minhja4924 3 года назад
@@BasiePlants yeh some people picks up pink princess at Bunnings (big hardware/garden chain) for $40-$60. Nope none of the Bunnings I visited have them hahaha. I think by next year, Hoya price will drop at least for the common ones. There seems to be heaps on sales. The rare ones still hard to get for now. There are heaps of people who has been growing Hoya for years long before the boom.
