Hozier is easily my all time favorite artist. I remember seeing him live a few years ago, his stage presence was godlike. No other human can do what he does.

I wouldn't interpret this song as being about abuse, especially knowing Cherry Wine is about DV. This song is more about being addicted to your lover and the way it can wreck you (as substance dependency can).

It’s definitely about abuse. Even in Cherry Wine he excused her abuse because he was chasing the small amounts of validation she would sometimes give him

his live performances are so much better than his recorded tracks, because this song absolutely fucks live. He's beyond double entendres, the themes are multi layered, layer1: a personal addiction/toxic love narrative with gf/drug dealer, layer2: a homage to Portrait of An Artist as a Young Man, layer3: circle of life/fertility rites

Very few can do imagery like Hozier. Almost always dark and melancholy, his sound and songwriting are a whole vibe. Like most people I bought his first album based on Take Me to Church and them my mind was blown at his talent. Can’t wait for the new EP on 03/17/2023…and he teased yesterday that he will have a full album out later this year!

Notice how at the end it’s a sustained key/note on the organ, which can represent an organ being played at one’s funeral OR the long beep when a person has flatlined. Crazy. You earned a sub from me dude can’t wait to binge your other vids!
