Hozier has said that this video is in response to the face that gay men were being beaten, tortured and killed while it was streamed live in Russia. It does have some obvious calling out of religious hypocrisy and he did do a line by line breakdown of the song in one interview. It was interesting. His music is incredibly interesting and this is, honestly, one of his least engaging songs and it's the one that everyone seems to know. His most recent album mirrors his thoughts about Dantes Inferno which he read during Covid quarantine. He's well worth checking out, tons of amazing songs. Hozier uses his platform to bring awareness to social issues. This one is about gay rights, Cherry Wine is about domestic violence, Swan Upon Leda is about women's health rights, Jackboot Jump is about fascism, and Nina Cried Power is about using your voice to call out hate/prejudice/etc. I've seen his current tour twice and it can be very moving at times.
Yeah, the first time I saw this video I was 14 and I sobbed uncontrollably for about an hour 😬 I hadn't even realised I was a lesbian at that point, but I instantly knew the song was a protest about how religious institutions use their power to persecute people - and even though the pronouns in the song describe a male/female relationship, I thought it was pretty obvious what had pissed Hozier off given all the headlines about Russia at that time. It's horrific to know that people are killed across the world simply for falling in love and/or having sex with another consenting adult.
nothing like a man to bring these lyrics but also nothing like a man to not understand what is in the box lol,it's probably memories of their relationship,and the paremtal advisory was for the violence I guess they did kick him to death or if not to smithereens,a mob hauled up on his house too so pretty violent...he never cursed in the video
