This whole album is about Hozier’s divine partner/Eurydice and their soon-to-happen encounter which causes the end of the world. (I would assume because of some energy thing or fate?). These are also not only lyrics, but messages he is sending her, because they are not together yet. In “imagine being loved by me” he is telling her to think about him, in a way that they can connect. Also, he mentions in a lot of these songs a species of flood or tsunami and this is one of the songs he does that: “Before the wave hits...”
