I was a little bit delayed by the fact that there exist no free schematics or service manuals for this one, so if you have something like this ? please scan upload and share it, thanks in advance. This one is nice and clean now and is counting again, only a few minor details like digit 3 sometimes flip a 3 to a 5, and the max frequency is about 300 KHz, this is my number 62 Hewlett Packard video..
NOTE TO THE FUTURE : Always remember to open, and perform optical inspection, Before power on !
I found a new surprise inside, and got a bit angry, what the heck..

I use auto generated subs, i am sorry there are a few spelling errors,
maybe one day they can do it better..

(Thanks to all my Sponsors / Traders / Swappers / Sellers / Buyers, without your support and constant flow of cool items in/out, none of this would be possible)

You will never ever forget the full inspection before powering units up.

the best advise when testing / checking old unknown stuff, and also put an earth wire to the chassis

The HP repair site took the cards out and put them in a dishwasher. The internal design manual for instruments required the product withstand one dishwasher cycle using Calgonite soap.

correct, you CAN wash electronics in a dishwasher, good idea to remove the salt, but it is also a hard wash that will remove some silkscreens and some component values, so i personally dont recommend to do it, i prefer to do it manually, this way i know what is going on, and can stop if it goed bad at a much erlier stage.

@@TeardownOZ2CPU you are right, probably ok in the old days when new, but now I like your hand wash.

oh, and I'm sure my wife would not allow it anyway :)

@@IMSAIGuy we can also image the day we have 50 large boards and need to be done with it, I most likely end up with the dishwaster, but i do it a day my wife is not home.. no need for a funny argument

I learned to love old cal and inventory stickers... unless the case is in a condition where you want to take it to pieces and give it a shower of degreaser or even caustic soda based cleaner and will turn the stickers into a mess that still will be nasty to remove ;) White spirits (I think it's called Rensebenzin in Danish... love the word) tends to be good at getting unsightly stickers and glue loose...

610-01020 = 1966, week 10 1020th unit. Nice old unit. Newer units use a slightly different scheme, for example, 1208A15088 is the serial number for my HP 400E. The first two digits '12' is the number of years since 1960, the next two, '08' are the number of weeks in that year, 'A' is the country in which this unit was built, in this case America, and the last set of numbers are the units production number. If I remember correctly, the serial number does not reflect the actual date the unit was built, but the finalization date for that production run.

Checking for failed / shorted capacitors at least in the power supply section should be your first plan of action before applying any power. Expensive test instruments are likely to have better caps than consumer goods but their electrolytics can leak and dry out the same as anything else. Otherwise in the first 0.1 second of turning on the power you may explode irreplaceable components and the thing is now dead.

I keep adding reasons for a good round of looking, BEFORE power up old stuff :-) it is amazing what I have found of wierd reasons, the one you see at 5:39 is new and crasy !!

I'm always paranoid about testing frequency counter accuracy with 10MHz (or what their timebase is) or multiples, especially if the timebase oscillator is not strongly shielded and well decoupled.... oscillators are known to lock naturally if they can...
@TeardownOZ2CPU
@TeardownOZ2CPU 2 месяца назад
Yes that is possible, I should do a little follow up on this next time I have an old unshielded osc, in a counter, could be fun to see if I can prove this phenomenon
