HP 711A HV Power Supply Restoration 

I found one of those at a garage sale for $10, completely made my day. Just a really nice reasonably compact piece of gear. Mine was little hinky at first, but I replaced the .1 uf bumblebee caps and it came right to life. The only shortcoming of this piece is the lack of a bias supply, but I made one on a small chassis using a backwards filament transformer running off the 12.6 volt heater supply with an 0A2 gas reg tube crammed in there and it works great. I haven't replaced the electrolytics yet, but if I do, I will do exactly what you did with the PC-mount e-caps on some terminal strips or a parts board, $10 worth of caps and back in business.

When I saw the HP 771A video I skipped it since I couldn't find anything on the web. Didn't realize you meant HP 711A ! Now I went back and it makes more sense. There is a great manual available at the HP archive website. I like all the upgrades and replacement of the caps. Funny how the manual which dates from 1954 says about the E caps that they are high quality caps that should last 5 to 10 years! Yet you had to replace them as most were still there. Crazy stuff in the pursuit of making properly working test equipment. Steve
