The airflow is completely blocked in mine, and two years ago when this happened I got so frustrated I broke the plastic backing covering the fan to clean it and replaced the fan and the back of the laptop. Now I see the actual way to clean it, thank you!! I'm not buying another laptop unless it has a door to access the fan!
@justStardust940

Is it this hard to access the fan on all newer laptops now, or just the HPs? This is insane; the fan should be the first thing we see when we screw the nails on the exterior.

omg your a life saver! i opened my laptop for the first time by just watching this video and it went great! i ended up having two dust strips like the one in the video clogging up my fan. i used silver arctic 5 for the heat sink and now my portable cooler is louder than my laptop :D

You can fix this issue by taking out the following screws: The 4 screws under the battery, use the CD-ROM ejector tab and take out the 2 screws under, the 2 rear hinge screws on the left and right of the bay, 3 keyboard screws, one under the BIOS bay door. Now flip over the unit, removed the keyboard, and take out the 2 screws (black and silver that are on the keyboard cover/function switch cover bezel and unplug the cable. You should now see the LCD cable after removing that last bezel.

Giant thanks for uploading this video. I did a full breakdown and couldn't have done it without your video.
@TheMholsten
@TheMholsten 12 лет назад
All of these issues however generally require motherboard and CPU replacements. If are unsure if the unit is POSTing, after powering on the unit, wait a few seconds and attempt to toggle the CAPSLOCK. If it responds and lights up when you press the key, the unit actually POSTing, you however have no video output. This can be confirmed by plugging up an external monitor to the VGA port. A very common issue for this model is for the LCD cable to become unplugged from the motherboard.

i had a problem with my fan being seriously loud all the time and almost always on, i tried to take it apart but found it way too difficult and didnt want to damage anything (i have little experience with dissambling computers) so i put it all back. I then found the problem getting worse so i took the handheld end of a vacuum cleaner (the small suction part) and just put that over the fan hole in the bottom of the laptop....worked perfectly, and now the fan makes very little noise at all!

TYVM for this. I don't think I woulda had the nuts to do this without it! I completed the process (about 2 hours in total) and when it didn't boot I was very discouraged, but I reseated the ram chips and voila, good as new (for an HP lol). This saved me from a costly repair or from buying a new lappy. I have only 3 screws left over (2 are the silver sort so if anyone has an idea where they go lmk). I also found the schematic plans useful (google for dv4 schematics and click to hp site).

The BGA contacts are broken for overheat. Disassembly (at your risk) just like the video above. Use a hot air blower over the BGA for a coupple minutes and reassembly. Take care to don't burn anything. It may work for some days, but this machine has born condemned.

If you get the no boot, no video with a flashing num lock and Cap Lock take out the Wifi Cards and try booting... if it comes up swap the locations and then see if if boots with that arrangement... I did that once... ;-)

The HP dv series laptops are a major pain to fix. Most laptops do not make you pull the whole motherboard out just to get to the common task of cleaning dust from the air exhaust port. Nice going HP. This is not a job for amateurs on these systems.

I'v seen that lint problem in many laptops... But in one laptop the owner kept using it without taking it to me or another professional. And b/c of that it damanged the GPU. So if you are noticeing high heat and turn off's like that then either do a full cleaning like this video or take it to someone. You can damager parts on the board that will make you need to buy a new board to replace the entire motherboard. I use arctic silver 5 simply b/c its a better paste. But 5 stars on this video :)..

I don't know if you still care or not but I had this problem and I figured out that is was the angle of my laptop. If I started it up with the screen 90 < 0 degree angle then it turned turned on.

Great video and great description. I have a huge home fan pointed to my laptop and it's running almost at room temperature, but it's so noisy I can't hear my own thinking. I'll take notes of this video and try cleaning it myself, if I don't come back and comment, means I f*cked it up.

Another much easier alternative for this particular model is to use compressed air and a shop vac. I bought a used hp dv4 laptop on the mercari app as is for $15 because it had an overheating issue. Fixed it in literally 5 minutes. Yeah probably not the best method, but for a cheap 10 year old laptop, I didn't have much to lose.

There is someone in my area selling one of these laptops for ONLY 170$! In the post he says it get's really hot, and it has something to do with vga. I do realize I am taking a risk here, cause it may be something much worse. I'm going to buy it and open it up and put some artic silver 5 thermal paste on the heatsinks, and clean the shit out of the vents.

@w4tch4cl4wschannel You ABSOLUTELY NEED that thermal paste (zero thermal) he was talking about! That is vital that the heatsink has the best possible contact with the CPU without it you will experience overheating, among other things. It IS overheating, you don't seem like you know anything about what you are doing. Get some thermal paste and put it on or risk the life of your cpu as it may overheat too much and either go up in smoke, or just stop working.
@TheMholsten
@TheMholsten 12 лет назад
@thegamegorilla First thing, you are going to have to make a diagnosis of the issue during the unit's attempt to POST. Wait after powering on the unit to see if the board will generate a POST error code. This can be read by watching the CAPSLOCK and NUMLOCK LEDs: The LED's will flash in a cycle, these are the meanings of those blinks (this is the same for all HP laptops) One Blink is No CPU detected Two is a corrupted BIOS Three is Faulty RAM Four is No GPU detected Five is General Board Fail

If you've done this and it is still overheating, check your fan (listen) to see if its even starting up. I opened mine up just enough to see the fan and verify that it wasnt starting up even when the temp reached 75 degrees. Now, Im just waiting to get a new fan in the mail to replace it. Hopefully its just the fan that is broken and not something iwith the motherboard that is causing the fan not to start up.

Oh actually I remember now it stopped working right when I got it back from being repaired by HP through best buy Geek Squad for a totally unrelated issue. I got it back 7 weeks after I dropped it off (which also happened to put it past my 3 year extended warranty), the hinge on the screen they repaired broke a week later, the speakers an the fan stopped working around the same time. I know every is thinking "why didn't you bring it back to Best Buy" well being a college student it is nearly im

Will give you guys an example..... Was getting a bsod and hardware failures.... took my custom built dv8 to microcenter to get bench tested and they wanted to charge me 75 for diag and 460 to replace a few things(usb/audio card, wireless card, cpu fan, and keyboard).... for the 4 hrs it takes to disasseble and reassemble.... its worth the 75 for bench test and 100 in parts..... to do it yourself. Just be warned, be very careful pulling off the heat sink, they thermal paste that HP uses is crap.

@shahzad05 1). the thermal pad is a VERY bad design for the video chip (on tail of heatpipe) and most likely it overheated quickly due to a gap. Replace with a new pad or buy a copper shim so as to make good thermal contact. 2). I believe too much thermal past was used on the cpu (should be extremely thin. 3). your video cable may not be flush with its socket. 4). I had video problems for 4 months (had to keep closing lid), fix replace inverter under base of screen (HP logo).
@machinimastartup
@machinimastartup 11 лет назад
so the deal about thermal paste is that it transfers heat from processor to heat sink so the cpu does not heat up. no thermal paste means the heat is not transferred out and your CPU is overheating and automatically shuts down. in facts thermal paste is one of the most important aspects of your laptop. :) buy and apply some. Consult the manual to know where to apply.(the manual is online just google your model which is at the back of the laptop)

This is why Hp has lots of bad ratings, They are a GREAT company, but their design planing is very complicated and made to be not opened. I have a Hp DM4, cleaning the Heat sink is a big pain. I'd recommend taking to a computer shop to have it fixed if yours is. :D

I've just got this laptop and i've noticed that where the gpu is at the thermal pad and the aluminum that is to the cpu isn't very helpfull for heat dissipation. aluminum isn't ver good for heat, if it was then you would see it on the cpu to. I removed the thermal pad on the gpu and also the thermal paste on the cpu, put a copper shimmy on the gpu to help the aluminum and termal paste on both sides of the copper shimy and the cpu.. I used artic silver 5 and haven't had heat issues.

A client of mine has this and she states that it does not boot up. I tried booting it up with her batter and with her power cord, but it is not booting up. She states that she bought it from someone of craig's list for 50 because she has one at home that is not booting up as well. After seeing this video I feel like returning it to her and telling her to invest in a new laptop. This is one of the most tedious laptops I have come across.

So whats the justification on manually spreading around the thermal paste. That could create tiny air pockets. Try this next time: Apply a small dot of paste to the center of the CPU/GPU. DON'T TOUCH IT WITH YOUR FINGER. Square up the heat sink to the CPU and gently lower it without pushing down. Screw it back into place moving diagonally from screw to screw. This will evenly spread the paste and maximize its spreading. Also this could explain more /watch?v=EyXLu1Ms-q4
