HP ProDesk 400 G7 with Intel Core i5, 8GB DDR4, 512GB NVMe Review & Teardown

HP ProDesk 400 G7 is a microtower PC. It comes with basic wired USB keyboard and mouse. In this video I review and teardown a unit with Intel Core i5, 8GB DDR4 and 512 NVMe. There is even a DVD writer optical drive. The motherboard and the BIOS are picky and supports only RAM memory with JEDEC profile at 1.2V running at 2666MHz for Intel i3 or i5 CPUs and 3200MHz for Intel i7 CPUs. Please note XMP (Extreme Memory Profiles) RAM is not supported. There are several slots for adding new peripherals: PCIe x16, PCI x1 and M.2 2280.

Yes, it is a very good office computer. I still use it on one of my desks.

10th gen i3/i5 supprts 2666MHz max, while 10th gen i7 supports only maximum 2933MHz. 11th gen supprts 3200MHz out of the box

Very important remark about the RAM is that the profile must be JEDEC. Initially I tried upgrading with Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) RAM but it worked only at 2133MHz. So as mentioned in the video I had to return and replace it with another that had 2666MHz JEDEC profile.

well... you have to disassemble the computer as shown in the video, remove the fan, buy the same model and replace it.

Yes, there is a PCI Express Gen 3 x16 port on the motherboard. You can see it at 5:29. Keep in mind the case is very compact so physically the space inside is limited.

Can the processor be upgraded to an i9?

I am not sure if is compatible. For ProDesk 400 G7, on HP web site the specifications include i7-10700, i5-10600, etc.

No, as far as I can see in the HP technical specs for ProDesk 400 G7 i9 are not supported: support.hp.com/bg-en/document/c06918483

@@LeonAnavi another question, the maximum it supports is an i7-10700, if i buy an i7-10700F will it detect it? the second one is cheaper than the first one and i already have a graphic card and i don't want a processor with an integrated card.

@@ivanisai4330 well, may be but I am not the person to give 100% answer on this topic as I haven't performed CPU upgrade on this particular PC. Read the details in HP documentation. I think they have forums too.

No, afaik NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 is with PCIe 4.0 x16 and HP Pro Desk 400 G7 offers internal PCIe x1 and x16 Gen 3.

You can try removing the CMOS battery that comes with the computer. It provides power to the real-time clock but also your passwords, and any special system setups.

This is a business PC. It is not made with gaming in mind. Although GTA V is an old game probably you should consider upgrading with an external GPU and depending the model also the PSU.
