*Update: it IS possible to install and boot to operating systems on an NVMe drive on an HP Stream 13 laptop! See some of my later comments on this thread for the solution that worked for me.* Great video, brother! Easily one of the most helpful that I've seen on RU-vid -- this video has far more simplicity and than videos from other channels with thousands of subscribers. I followed along and managed to swap an SSD (with an adapter) into the wifi card slot also. Although it's given me 256gb of extra storage, the bad news is that I cannot use it as a boot drive. My wifi card slot on my HP Stream 13 didn't have a mPCIE connector... It had a M.2 connector (with A+E key). So I've had to use an NVMe SSD instead of an mSATA SSD. It seems like NVMe cannot be used for booting in the same way that SD cards can't be used for booting on HP Stream 13 laptops 😓
@@alexlam4410 I tried everything, brother. Secure boot off, secure boot on. Legacy support off, legacy support on... But none of them worked in getting the efi/system partition on the new drive to be recognised. I've installed Linux on the old 32gb drive instead, because 32gb isn't enough for Windows. Funnily enough, the grub bootloader for Linux does show entries in its boot menu for my Windows install and other Linux installs on the new NVMe drive, but unfortunately when I try to click/enter any of them I get errors saying that the device doesn't exist. That's why I think NVMe drives are like microSD drives for this type of laptop in the sense that there is no native ability to boot to them.
UPDATE: Turns out that it *IS* possible to boot to an OS on an NVMe drive installed on an HP Stream 13 😃 Although it is still the case that HP's shoddy UEFI doesn't recognise NVMe drives during boot time, there is a simple solution to bypass this problem: install the *rEFInd* bootloader (technically a boot manager) along with its *NvmExpressDxe-64.efi* driver. There is no need to enable legacy mode support when using this method. Thank you Alex, because the combination of this video and rEFInd has allowed me to make my laptop highly usable (the best its been since I got it in 2016!) where as before I was considering sending it to trash!
@@ThisIsHolyJJ One Can you send me link where to buy adapter and ssd, and also where I can find REFIND bootloader and nvmexpressdxe-64.efi driver ? Thanks in advance
I did this on a 14-inch stream model, but I needed to use a refind for it to boot from the ssd, using the way you did with the adapter. Wasn't this procedure necessary for this model?
Really well done! I've been looking for a solution to this problem for years, but since the hdd is soldered on the motherboard I didn't know how to replace it, you made me discover a new solution! Could you link the pieces you bought? Thank you very much in advance 👍🏻
I purchased the adapter from Taobao, not sure if you can purchase and ship to your location. good luck. item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z09.2.0.0.c3422e8dOU3g6E&id=566340847191&_u=u29fbup95e13
@@alexlam4410 First of all, thank you for your help, unfortunately nothing can be seen from that page, so I would like to ask you if you could show me the name of the manufacturer and the model of the adapter, because in the HP Stream 13, ONLY that adapter you have can fit. you, I have tried to search many on the web (Amazon, Ebay, Google, etc ..), but I could not find even one of that size, I hope for your help, thank you very much in advance and sorry for the inconvenience .
Hi, "taobao" is a China site, not sure if it was blocked by the China firewall... There is no packing for the adapter... It was cost around USD15, and I can help you to order if you need it, but seem the delivery charge from HK to Itlay is much high .. it may not worth to do it.
@@alexlam4410 greetings friend Indeed, it is an issue to be able to buy it while on the other side of the world, since the Chinese firewalls restrict me, apparently this page is not as international as AliExpress or Alibaba. Do you think you can send me this adapter to Miami, United States to a specific address and I will pay it by Paypal? and how much would it cost?
Dam man i was literally bouta throw my laptop away … cant factory reset cuz of memory to lil.. this will work on hp stream 13 notebook right? Mine look a lil different thats why…
if you know how to desolder the ram and resolder the new ram. it should be technically possible but very difficult to do. Also even getting any spare ram parts for this laptop would be insanely hard to do since how old this laptop is.
if your hard drive isn’t broken, you can upgrade the storage in a pretty seamless way by using the micro sd slot. they sell micro sd cards now that are like 10x the native storage on the stream and they insert flush into the slot so its set it and forget it with no reduction in form factor. ofc thats only if the native drive isn’t broken
Hello Sir, Will this method works if I upgrade my ssd if there is a fault in keyboard? Because there is a fault in keyboard in my laptop. Then if I upgrade that will it work as usual? Will a problem occur?
I will suggest you to find a USB keyboard and try if it can also work under BIOS mode. If yes then try to install it with the USB keyboard. (I believe it should work)
Your concern about best performance is pointless. It's a cheap laptop and I'm pretty sure the WIFI card slot is sharing PCIe bandwidth with the USB card anyway.
Hi Veronica. It depends entirely on your HP Stream 13 model, because there are actually a lot of different types. You are basically limited to what connector your WiFi card slot your laptop's model has. Mine is an HP Stream 13 with model number 13-c100na. As you can see in Alex's video, his model has a wifi card which had an mPCIe connector. In his case, it would not be possible to install an m.2 drive because mPCIe to M.2 (with M key) adapters are not available. My HP Stream model has an M.2 connector (with A+E key) for the WiFi card... And so I was able to get an adapter for an M.2 drive with an M key. So that's why I would not have been able to install an mSATA drive even if I wanted to. However, you won't get full M.2 read and write speeds because the laptop's technology is too old. The mSATA and M.2 speeds on HP Stream 13s would have very little, if any, difference. I'd say just install whatever your laptop model allows you to. I hope that helps 👍
How can I purchase mpci to msata adaptor can you please give me a link, becouse I have same HP stream 13 laptop please please please! Give me a link "Amazon
@Sushil Bro, did you manage to get the NVMe drive to work as a bootable drive? Even my wifi card had an NVMe connector (with A+E key) and so even I had to get an adapter. But the BIOS doesn't detect it for booting and so I can still only use an OS installed on the old 32gb drive. So just wanted to know if you managed to succeed. Thanks.
@@07sushy Thanks for the update. If I do ever manage to get my NVMe drive to be recognised as bootable, I'll provide an update with instructions. Thanks again brother 🙏
