Health Professions Council of SA's David Mametja responds to the plight of foreign-trained doctors who say the HPCSA is not acting with urgency to address the delayed board exams for over a year.

All documents were sent to the HPCSA, we never took a year to get documents from our university, it doesn’t take a month to translate and Notarise documents. Take accountability HPCSA, you have failed!

It's absolutely disheartening that Mr Mametja would come and lie on a public platform. Some of us we have since sent our applications end of last year and because of their incompetence they only sent a response 2 month ago because there is a court case against the HPCSA that forced them to go through our applications. It is not because we did not qualify to study in SA, most of us passed matric with distinctions and on top of that the universities that we studied from, be it China or Russia they are part of the top 40 universities in the world and they use the American curriculum. The problem here is not that Foreign Trained Medical Graduates are "incompetent " but rather that the HPCSA has been dragging their feet to do their job and because of the corruption within the board that is why it's hard for them to finalize the contract with the service provider. In most hospitals right now the Doctors who are thriving and doing well are mostly Foreign Trained but they won't praise them.

The complainant said all their documents are notorised. The contemtion falls flat. You sent students for training without preparing system to get them registered. Amen

What is sad is that yearly this is the status of affair in HPCSA ..incompetence that's what it is ...my issues is if they can't able to do thier Jobs they must remove the rules and apply the same rationale they did to the cuban Dr's that they brought from Cuba druign covid and did not even write the exams but went to work in our communities and we exempted from the exams...can our government stop remove the lawyers and incompetent people in HPCSA.

This is so sad seeing this man talk so negatively about citizens that got gvt sponsorship to study abroad come back and be denied to practice. The funny thing is Russia and China who trained these doctors have far much more advanced medical systems than SA.

Mametja's answer to the question about Cuban doctors is absolutely BS. Unbelievable how HPCSA can discriminate against South African doctors. The HPCSA should be making it easy for SA doctors to be employed in SA, not more difficult.

There are many foreign trained Doctors in our hospitals who entered the system pre-1994 and they are generally very competent.. could it be that the current regime of government and this body are just incompetent👀

Emotional rollercoaster it has been! It still is. I waited four years to write the HPCSA exam- passed both theory and practical with flying colours on my first attempt and yet I’m still not able to work due to HPCSA stating that my campus did not meet their requirements. 😢

Why was it so much easier pre 1994 when many SA doctors trained in Ireland and other countries? They did not have to go through such difficulties when applying to work in South Africa. All these Gov institutions need to be shut down and rebuilt in the future. They are really an obstacle to our people. They, and the ANC, need to go. Its very frustrating to see this type of incompetence and arrogance.

SOLUTIONS 1 No border exam for all south africans trained abroad 2 permit locums for interns and newly graduate 3 Remove the obligation of "internship" and comserve for foreign qualified or extend the period of service. Internship and comserve is just a period of service. Internship and comserve should not determine doctor's qualifications.They are qualified doctors, internship/comserve or not 4.Increase number of institutions that take in newly graduate. Afterall a qualified doctor can be trained almost anywhere by almost any qualified doctor. 5 permit newly graduate to train, serve or work anywhere in south africa and africa

Why did government send them to institutions where they would be trained in foreign languages pay money & not being able to absorb them when they come back is that not showing failure on their part to set up systems in place before hand let alone those who have gone/filtered through the very same hands & practiced without qualifications I quote a lady who was fooled by her very partner whom she thought he was a doctor

What BS he is talking about Cuban students that they are competent enough for the south African health system! They don't even get taught HIV/ TB medicine and anaesthesia from Cuba! As a doctor, I train and mentor them, they are horrific! Can't even manage a patient safely and the South African doctors need to work double the hours to complete and manage their responsibilities. I really don't know where their priorities lie. Provinces have no skilled doctors willing to work there and competent specialists who can't even get through to register and are willing to help poor patients with their component skills!

I trained in Cuba, came back did my final year passed in record time and went on to specialise again passed in record time , I have met a number of South African trained doctors who very incompetent so for you to say Cuban trained doctors are horrific just because you have mentored few is just not on

HPSCA has failed period. Our government take this students overseas to study but they are not ready for them coming them. They know of language differences but still have not done anything about that, they are still to meet about that, that is why it will take years to register them.This people are tiring and incompetent.

HPCSA has a responsibility to protect rhe public. They are very wrong for not giving these graduates a chance to write their board exams. As a country we must be very careful , every degree needs to be verified , if that is note done there will be loophole where you find people taking advantage of people. Again if such a scenario occurs publiv will blame the hpcsa.

The solution here lies with a government to government agreement, at the level of the respective health councils of the involved countries, with a list of accredited universities inclusive of training duration, training standards, areas of competence -skills training etc. Also included should be the necessary exit documentation upon qualification in English. This will ensure that the students come back to this country board exam ready! The HPCSA and our government is handling the matter in an extremely incompetent fashion. This is tantamount to wasteful expenditure as these medical students are funded by taxpayers money.

African leadership,you sent your own children,your beloved children to study overseas because your praised the outside system but back home you treat them differently! The day Africans will know how to build their own standards, such issues will disappear! African leaders know how to praise Russia, China , India for the level of Medicine but when your own African children bring the same level of Medicine home, you lock them in the garage! They are full doctors, please remove these things of board examination. It's hypocrite how Africans complain about health system issues while they are rejecting their own. That board exam doesn't make them to be Doctors, they are already Doctors, just let them get in the local system. Within a few time, you will appreciate their contributions! When someone is speaking about " our side of story" don't expect much from him! He is acting as an accused instead of a leader supporting followers! HPCSA is failing our young South African professionals and they are dragging their feet about acknowledging the documents. We are living in a time of advanced technology so it is possible to verify documents within a month . The interviewer was great in asking the relevant questions but this person who is being interviewed, is fumbling and has no intelligent answers.
