HPSP Military Medical/Dental School Scholarship: how to choose which branch between Air Force, Army, and Navy! Learn why I chose Air Force HPSP over the other branches.
THE OPINIONS IN THIS VIDEO ARE MY OWN AND DO NOT REFLECT THE VIEWS OF ANY OTHER INSTITUTIONS OR THE MILITARY.
As I say in the video, do your own research, pick the branch that is right for YOU, and talk with people currently in that branch! It is so important that the branch you pick is one that you feel supported in and what that you can connect with other service members in.

HPSP students need not worry about their peers in the branch. As medical doctors, they do not have command over soldiers like regular officers do. Typically, regular O-3 officers are responsible for a hundred soldiers, but medical doctors are directly commissioned for medical duty only. Instead, they should focus on considering their branch in terms of duty station and work environment. For instance, Navy duty stations are mostly located in or around big cities, but there is also the opportunity to work on an aircraft carrier. If working on a warship is not something that interests you, then choosing the Navy may not be the best option. Each branch has distinct duty locations, with the Air Force and Army frequently stationed in remote areas. Although you can indicate your preferred duty station, they reserve the right to assign you anywhere.
@racheldoesbalance

those are good points. military docs definitely have less military responsibilities/command over a less amount of ppl than their line officer peers with the same ranking, but they do have more leadership/commitments than most civilian doc peers

Hi! I actually have a unique situation because I didn't have to apply through the HPSP board for the HPSP. I applied through the AFROTC Pre Health board and when I passed that, they granted us the HPSP scholarship with our educational delay immediately, bc we would've had to apply for the board anyway. i know that people who are matriculating into medical schools starting in fall 2022 have been completing interviews and finalizing their applications around right now

@racheldoesbalance
@racheldoesbalance Год назад
sorry for the late reply! that's great that you're interested in HPSP and joining the AF reserve. if you join the AF reserve now, you will join as an enlisted member and then you may have to carry out that contract before you do your HPSP contract, and that may be very difficult to do with medical school. doing HPSP will have you immediately become an officer, then serve directly after medical school. it is two different paths, but you can still become a doctor/officer in the AF through both of them. i would talk more with a recruiter about the logistics/pay back commitment for each and how that aligns with your goals and vision

@racheldoesbalance
@racheldoesbalance 2 года назад
i actually never really considered the navy, only because when i was trying out rotc, my undergrad university only had army and air force rotc and i chose air force bc i knew someone in air force rotc. the navy is a great branch and is a great place to practice military medicine, i would just do a little more research about their matching process and GMO process. i dont know much about it, but from what ive heard, you apply to residency to see if you get a PGY1 year, and then during residency you have to apply again to see if you get a PGY2 year or if you have to go into the fleet and be a GMO. i know for a fact if you get an army or air force active duty residency, you just go through and complete it and dont have to apply again to stay in it

Without doing much research or thinking about it too deeply i would say yes bc it’s the biggest with the most amount of spots and bases. Even if you did army & she did AF tho or Vice versa there are still army AF joint bases and programs too, something too keep in mind. Less so with joint navy/AF or navy/army, bc the AF came out of the army so it’s connected

How would you chart a course to med school for a USAFA first year cadet?
@racheldoesbalance
@racheldoesbalance 7 месяцев назад
take the required premed classes, plan to take the mcat in the fall/spring semester of junior year so the score is ready to submit by june of your junior year, talk with your advisors about a prehealth slot instead of a nonrated/ rated slot ... in rotc we have a prehealth board, idk if this is different at the academy. this gives you "permission" from the military to not go active duty and instead take an educational delay to go to medical school. start looking at schools. consider USUHS, although this adds an additional 7 years on to your service time, civilian med school adds 4 years. make sure you get some sort of clinical experience during a summer maybe or if you can be an emt/scribe while at the academy if possible. focus on leadership stuff although that shouldnt be too difficutl for you. basically tell your superiors your plan and make sure they know whats going on and can help you. find a mentor that has done it that can help guide you!

Question , I’m currently a marine active duty and am looking to become a doctor in the military. Would I have to get out of the marine corps , get a bachelor and then rejoin to become a doctor? Or could I just get out and have the Air Force pay for my undergraduate and med school ?
@nitenangel
@nitenangel Год назад
What you said is the easiest path. Most medical schools will not even accept pre-requisites taken online, and they do take into account where you got your undergraduate (prestige matters sometimes). When you get out, you can use the GI bill to finish your undergrad, and in your third year, you can apply to medical school so you can go from graduating with your Bachelor's to entering medical school in the same year. A lot of people take gap years between undergrad and applying for medschool to make themselves more competitive so take that into account when planning your life as well. I'm a corpsman and I'm starting medschool in August. My path to it was a little wonky, but you can DM me if you have questions.
@racheldoesbalance
@racheldoesbalance 10 месяцев назад
wow, thats great advice! ^^^ and good luck to you both!! i believe you could work on your associates while in the military still (i know enlisted ppl in the air force do this) then you could finish the last 2 years at a university as a civilian or you could try to get an rotc scholarship to pay for it, but i agree, if you have the GI bill then use that for those 2 years. once you get your bachelors, then you can apply to medical school and hpsp. it would be difficult to get the AF to pay for your undergrad, unless you did rotc. although if you do that, just remember you'll get some years added on. good luck!!!

@racheldoesbalance
@racheldoesbalance 3 года назад
are you an American citizen or a European citizen? I do know that in order to fully contract/join the US military you have to be a US citizen or be working on your citizenship so by the time you commission to become an officer you have your citizenship. I don't believe there is, just because I know one of the requirements for HPSP is that you have to receive admission from a medical school in the United States. I think their reasoning is that they want you to be closer so you can go to the summer trainings that you need to go to. unfortunately i dont know much about military medical school in europe, im sorry. because i dont have too much knowledge on your topic, i would reach out to an HPSP recruiter and ask them your questions because they would know for sure. hope that was somewhat helpful!
