I immediately hate you 😂😂😂. I was only 11 and no chance mum was letting me go to Brixton Academy. Same answer when I wanted to see Cypress Hill there in ‘99. I’m still bitter. And oh yeah, I got glandular fever just before Rage played at Reading…I had a ticket. They disbanded soon after.

@jaysharpESQ

It's something I've studied and tried to mimic a bit, but not to the point of imitating... Incorporated that into my own songwriting a bit. Still the whole loud quiet loud/ verse Chorus verse thing ALWAYS felt just a bit TOO Pixies Nirvana (and i suppose) SP (too? Like Today) What Thom Yorke famously referred to as Fridge Buzz music... So typically I try to set out to capture a consistent mood throughout a tune. i can deliver an angsty AGGRESSIVE song start to finish and then just play another original after that's all sweet and hushed- Hopefully, like the kinda whispered falsettos of Purr Snickety or Soothe or something like that... Regardless, if it wasn't for BILLY and these cool cats, there's none of my bands. That's for sure. He's ENTIRELY the reason i wanted to pick up a guitar and learn to play and write songs in the first place. Really!! At 17 i finally got my first acoustic and leaned Stumbleine and In the Arms of Sleep first as (by my estimation) they could still pack a punch w/o a full band, But i did that too(start my first band) two years later at the ripe old age of 19. Thank you Captain O Corrigan!

band firing on all cylinders. i saw this tour but sadly only after the incident with jimmy and jonathan...but i WAS at jimmy's first show back in the band, and it was at a tiny club, so that kind of made up for it. but yeah...this performance thru the eyes of ruby is a high water mark of this band. even james comes off like a badass in his solo. spectacular.

One of the best sp concerts imo. I remember taping (yes VHS) this, transferring it to my audio tape and replaying umpteen times., Of course these were my teenage/coming of age years and hold particular significance and memories. I used the video of this concert to learn most of the songs on the guitar. My personal favourites Porcelina and Thru the eyes of ruby especially with their alternate endings. This was clearly a tumultuous time for the pumpkins and it brought out the best in them

Just wanted to chime in how i always told anyone who'd listen that Porcelina and Thru the Eyes of Ruby are my favorites and wished we lived in a world where they could still be singles and played on the radio too ( i got so sick of Bullet With Butterfly Wings and Muzzle on the NY Rock Stations in the 90s.)

Amazing show, but sad seeing Jonathan on keys in the background looking so full of life, it's hard to watch knowing what was just around the corner for all the members. Double tragedy is that they are at their absolute fucking most awesome here. I love all the new material and all the line up changes have never really bothered me, but seeing this I feel they were all on the cusp of absolute world domination and then it all fell apart. i miss the 90's and I hope the recent news about a possible original line up re-union come to fruition and it puts to bed some of the demons that obviously still hang over Billy.
@brandonedgealbums
@brandonedgealbums 8 лет назад
yeah it was a real tragedy. i got to catch the brief spring 1999 reunion before d'arcy left, where they were debuting Machina songs, that was fab. i liked zwan a lot, but not too much of the "SP 2.0" stuff. but i still respect them for being real artists and not falling back on the angst material to pander to old fans, even if i'm one of those fans, lol.

The Smashing Pumpkins had such a unique sound that worked incredibly well with Billy's distinct and versatile voice. Whether it was one of their softer melodic songs or one of their heavier guitar shredding songs, you always immediately knew it was them when you heard the song come on. It's interesting to see them open this show with some lighter songs (Tonight, Tonight/1979) and then totally change the vibe with Zero which is one of their more aggressive/heavier tracks. There are not many bands who can pull off such a vast array of music.

I am just utterly obsessed with SP. Especially live coverage. These days it’s been of great comfort and healing for me for some reason. I take breaks by throwing in some Dr. Jordan Peterson. Keep it real, y’know? I can definitely see Jimmy’s ruin here. It’s starting to unravel. Omg is that chick sitting on someone’s shoulders? Holy fuck.

ha, small world... my girlfriend's from chch... we both saw them at v festival in perth '09. not as good as this! should've seen air play at kings park instead that same month (they played in v fest line-up except wa - did their own show - was amazing by all accounts). hope their chch gig was as good as this :-)

Taped this concert on the VHS back in late 96. I was in bed and it was being simulcast on triple j (on the radio) and rage (the tv) so ran out and taped it over the first thing I found. That tape has long since died. So glad I can watch it again.

Qué lindo ver a los Smashing me tocando el Mellon Collie. Mi disco favorito. Yes they were at the top of their game and yes shit was going to hit the fan, but it’s also good to know that they evolved as human beings. It’s so sad to think that D'Arcy couldn’t reincorporate to the band yet, but Wretzky if you’re reading this I think you will recover your craft and that you can shine again. You were such a big part of this band. And such a great inspiration for all of us. Some of which would become musicians ourselves thanks to bands like the Pumpkins. Gracias.

wish you could've been there Monika. the time i mean, not the show. its a miracle that some of you that have grown up being offered shite for new music can still recognize a masterpiece when you see one. but you obviously can. neat
