HS2 Colne Valley Viaduct

Just a quick view from below the viaduct before further work takes place later this year, landscaping etc. The footage is of the northern end of the viaduct adjacent to North Orbital Road.
The pier split down the middle is one of a pair, 3 pairs in total accross the viaduct to allow for expansion..The second pair is across Moorhall Road....in a lengthier than usual arch.
HS2 is UK's newest high speed rail line connecting London with Birmingham and the north of England.

British engineering at its best. This type of structure is as bold as when the Victorians built the original railways in the UK!

Engineering at best.. Its French company.. construct. .Swiss approved.. Austrian rail system.. BR was destroyed, the only british part is the navvies..

I hope that by the time the line is commissioned the temporary roadways & associated land alteration surrounding the bridge will be restored to previous condition.

I think there’s a plan for this to be done by middle of next year, though haven’t seen any photos of what it was like before..unless it’s just more of what is currently behind the fencing.

There night be a need for a maintenance access road which would also serve as a cure brigade access/emergency exit.

BTW. there are hundreds of alike structures in the Japan, Bullet Train. Shinkansen. All earth quake proof. so a different approach.

Thing is all this land will be put back to nature after construction. My inly gripe about this is that its a missed opportunity to add a cycle track alongside - either on the viaduct itself or at the ground level.

@@EdgyNumber1 So been in Japan.. and played football under the viaducts on a rainy summer eve. Its was community playground. Being a welsh man, i explained rugby, and kicking it thought H viaducts... They had their own version and was fun. "In Wales, rugby is played by men with oval shaped balls" but was a communiy area..

Those trees on the Down side are going to be a problem needing frequent attention, maybe even before regular services commence. They are too close.

Great question but I'm not sure. Might be for fluid waste drainage of some description but i really don't know....i doubt the containers are for rainwater. Thanks for watching!

Trains don't much like going up hills. If you can keep the incline shallow, speed can be maintained and it is more energy efficient.

This is crossing a shallow valley to the west of London. The valley is filled with a river, a canal and lots of lakes at this point. The viaduct crosses all of these before the ground rises up to meet the tracks and a short distance after the line disappears into tunnels.

As eddaines says the footage is deceptive but the whole area has numerous watery obstacles which is why they needed to build the UK's longest railway viaduct for 2.1 miles over the valley. It also needs to be elevated as it is lining up to enter two tunnels that are being built under the M25 which then runs for ten miles to the West. If I recall correctly the tunnel portals are slightly elevated from the the bottom of the valley so the viaduct routes into them. 👍

Actually the current cost for this viaduct is £1.6 billion and the total for HS2 is perhaps as much as £100 billion.. that’s the whole project for one tenth of your grossly exaggerated cost.
