The construction of HS2 in the West Midlands is well underway - years before the first trains run it is creating thousands of jobs and training courses for local people, and awarding billions of pounds worth of contracts to the region’s businesses.
Exciting landmarks are rising on local skylines, attracted by the improved transport connections and business confidence that HS2 brings. Since HS2 was approved by Parliament in 2017, the number and scale of planned developments within 1.5 miles of Curzon St Station, Interchange Station and the Washwood Heath Depot, has increased dramatically. These new places to live, work and visit are projected to add £10 billion to the local economy over the next 10 years.
Since Royal Assent was granted for the railway in 2017, the number of planning applications seen in a 1.5 mile radius around these three major HS2 hubs has increased by two-thirds.
Over the same timescale, the area of total planned floorspace - including commercial and residential - has increased by 200%, and the planned number of new homes has increased by almost 500% - from 10,000 to 55,000 homes.

This is just showing us why HS2 should be going up to Crewe & Manchester (Western Leg) and the East Midlands (Nottingham & Derby), Sheffield & Leeds (Eastern Leg). Build HS2 in full and it would it would improve every regional city it goes near or through. Every functioning country has figured this out. HS2 if built in full is true "Levelling up". Not the tory slogan they love to trot around while doing nothing at all 👍

HS2 has got to be the single most misunderstood projects of all time. So many people fail to see the huge amounts of benefits it could bring especially if it is built to its full potential

@@CRIMSONANT1constraining rail growth (the most efficient travel mode save for biking) by scraping HS2 is going to cause MORE pollution and destruction, not less. Politicians boasted of speed, HS2 isn't about speed, it's about removing fast trains from victorian routes, allowing more freight onto the railways.
@CRIMSONANT1
@CRIMSONANT1 4 месяца назад
@@terryjimfletcher .. *SCRAPPING .. not "scraping". You do realise that HS2 would NEVER be carbon neutral in its entire, predicted 120 year lifespan? What is this "destruction" that you so dramatically forecast? If you weren't aware, we already have fast trains that operate on " Victorian routes" & they do a pretty good job! As for freight .. most of it travels by road & very little will change when HS2 finally opens (in about 50 years time at the current rate of progress). Research shows that even if HS2 had been built in full, traffic on the M40 & M1 would decrease by less than 1%. It's a massive white elephant & should never ever have seen the light of day.

@rubberduck3788

Well, the official stance is that it doesn't deliver value for money for the taxpayer, but we can apparently forget about waste in other departments or on other projects. The media and Government have a key part to play in not properly highlighting the vast number of benefits this provides too, like a huge increase in employment, a lot of training in skills, a well thought out and designed railway, and a huge increase in rail capacity that will help with our ever growing rail freight industry, people also forget this is a very rare project, we don't often do things on this scale, and so we tend to run into unforeseen problems, pushing up the cost. I'd love to personally see the whole thing finished as originally planned, chances are though, it'll never happen, I imagine the sale of the land compulsory purchased in Yorkshire for parts of it will have been auctioned back off to the Government friends for pennies by now.

@@rubberduck3788People keep claiming that land is being auctioned off cheap. But I haven’t seen an figures to back this up. Plus with auctions. The one who bids the most ends up with the goods. I suppose it could be the original purchase price had been too high.

Unless the UK's domestic rolling stock limits are moved to HS1 specifications through the HS2 project, exports of rolling stock to Europe will be hampered.

For Gods sake give it a rest, what is so special about the North and at present three quarters of HS2 is being constructed, starting in the North would not of made construction any quicker in fact slowere as contruction projects like this never start at one point but are constructed in many locations

@@user-ve8oe7ts1w As a Brummie living near to where HS2 is being constructed I think you are the one missing the point as starting in the North it would not of been finnished at all. Have you travelled south of Lichfield and bothered to look at the construction of HS2, if you did you would see that this Railway is being constructed the whole lenghth of the line, that is construction work is being undertaken from Birmingham North to Handsacre in Staffordshire and South towards London including two major stations in the Birmingham Area, Birmingham Curzon Street and Birmingham Interchange, the main maintanance depot in Washwood Heath Birmingham, the huge Delta Junction just out side of Birmingham the whole line with tunnels and viaducts going South through the Chiltons towards London and both work on London Old Oak Common Station, Euston Station and building North towards Birmingham from London, so how do you make out starting in the North it would of been finnished by now utter rubbish. As I said on major contructions of this type they do not start in one point they start construction over he whole line

Hs2 is like putting solar panels on your house. It's a great idea but the maths doesn't work in the short to medium term, and the elephant in the room is the missing phase 2 that is required to make it work and justifiable. Hs2 is clearly great for Birmingham but not the uk as a whole unless the next phase is built.
