The first spans for the Wendover Dean Viaduct were pushed into place on the 10th of January, in this video we will take a look at how the viaduct is being constructed.

Excellent video - thanks for the update and background information. The teflon pad and winching details were very interesting, particularly the longitudinal loading. The longitudinal design case under heavy train braking is not something I had thought of. At those speeds it is certainly a significant load.

Glad you found it informative, it really is fascinating.

Fascinating stuff - it’s good to see that we can still construct impressive infrastructure like this!

But with French technology. Britain, once the greatest nation, can hardly boil a kettle now.

We did have a little bit of help from France, but it'd be a shame if having gained the knowledge that engineers left the UK after HS2 is finished.

Impressive video on what HS2 line will look like once it’s completed.

Hmm steel from France?? Why not the UK?
@Rail_Focus
@Rail_Focus 8 месяцев назад
Not so much about the steel, but the manufacture of the beam sections. They struggled to find anyone in the UK to fabricate the sections to the specifications needed. Nothing wrong with International corporation if it produces a quality product as a reasonable price.

French engineering is now far more capable and technologically advanced than British.But we are still pretty good with shovels.

They've certainly had a lot more experience building high-speed rail infrastructure. If the Government hadn't cancelled phase 2 we could've retained that knowledge and put it to good use 🙁

BULL, I have worked for many engineering companies that could make those simple welded beams,
@EdgyNumber1
@EdgyNumber1 8 месяцев назад
@@MichaelKettlesonThe French are masters in tunneling and rail infrastructure though. We can easily and flexibly pick up that knowledge. However, because we don't build large scale infrastructure persistently enough (Tories hate infrastructure spending and only grudgingly give the cash) so that knowledge and industrial base tends to go away.
@MichaelKettleson

@@EdgyNumber1 I am talking of the manufacture of these very basic beams. Engineering companies are supplied with drawings and they return a quote, These beams can be made with very basic equipment in a fabrication shop, that has the crane capacity, sub arc welding gear and skilled men. available in many fab shops in the UK. The problem here is people like yourself talk down the UK when you dont actually know what we are capable off.

I spoke to someone working on HS2 yesterday. It probably wasn't the case that there's a lack of expertise, but that a UK company couldn't be found during the tendering process at the time. A Bolton based company is building similar weathering steel sections for BBV in Birmingham, but they tendered for that way in advance. I probably misunderstood what they chap at Wendover said. HS2 is using as many UK manufactured elements as it can, but due to the scale, it obviously puts as strain on the manufacturing industry.

its rather concering that its already extremely rusted

@courtybellaroadmodelrailwa1906 8 месяцев назад
Believe it not it’s pre rusted as such, provides protection against the elements.
@Rail_Focus

Called weathering steel. Counterintuitively protects the steel and makes it last longer.

The pre rusting looks awful
@Rail_Focus
@Rail_Focus 8 месяцев назад
But it protects the structure and actually makes it blend into the landscape better.
@timstarkey-smith8842
@timstarkey-smith8842 8 месяцев назад
@Rail_Focus re the blending in, I'm not convinced personally, new road bridges stand out when they're rusty, where as those painted green don't. I accept the longevity, as I m not a scientist, also to keep painting it costs money.
