I recently went on a GWR Hitachi replacement for the HST and hated it. Lacks the finesse and comfort of the HST.

I always have a soft spot and love the thunderous roar of the HST than the newer Voyager, whether it is a Great Western, Virgin, GNER, Midland Mainline or Grand Central. At least you can get fresh air by lowering the door windows, that you can't on a Voyager.

Voyagers have been substituted by HSTs before, even XC 170s have appeared at Piccadilly at a few points. Bet this raised some heads at Stafford, Stockport and especially Piccadilly.

Looking at the thumbnail, the HST has aged far better than the Pendolino.

Thanks for doing a shot of Coach A on these 👍 - I'm booked into Coach A on the 11:17 from Birmingham New Street to Bristol Temple Meads (first trip in First Class in a XC HST this will be If not replaced by a Voyager). Unfortunately, the seat facing the most towards the power car end in Coach A (number A40) was booked (so was the opposite one, fair enough) so I clicked on A04 - the window seat with a table and no seats opposite! I see people's point about the age of the HST's but there's no reason why XC can't get more in the future. I much prefer them over the Voyagers (as nice as these are in their own way). Plus I much prefer standing next to one at Birmingham New Street - less noise for a start (handy when you're talking to a member of staff, especially for good reason), plus you've not got fumes right next you! I've seen some older RU-vid of former Virgin XC HST's - one thing these had which the XC Voyagers have lacked for a few years now is a Quiet Coach!

Awesome video!! I could see the HST was going faster than the typical 110mph line speed for non-tilting trains. Did the HST do 125 on the WCML?

Bet that turned a few heads at some stations. Birmingham New Street is the closest I can get to seeing a regular in service HST!

I wish they ran HSTs to Manchester even if it was just twice a day say Penzance to Manchester and Manchester to Plymouth

Further to my comments, I may end up going First Class to Edinburgh (Standard Class to Oxford to Birmingham New Street then First Class on a XC HST on the 16:03 from there to Edinburgh) but on a Sunday in hopefully April next year. I'd do Advance Singles. At '2:00' in the video, the table seat in front of you on the left (number 40) opposite the luggage rack at the power car end is my first choice of seat subject to it being available. If I do First Class to Edinburgh then at least if it's a Voyager, I'll still hopefully get there around 9pm - plus they're still comfortable in First Class anyway. Also, either way, I'll have achieved what I've wanted to do which is arrive in Scotland for the first time by train :-)! I think a phrase is if you want the best outcome, sometimes you have to take a risk. I may end up changing my mind again and going Standard on a day, with an Off-Peak Return, on a day where the 16:03 and 17:03 on a weekday from Birmingham New Street to Edinburgh are both formed of an HST.

Scarp all voyagers and replace then with refurbished HST’s. Loads of HST’s are going off lease and likely to be scrapped. Don’t scrap them! Scrap the shite voyagers instead.
