John Powell and Jónsi’s “For the Dancing and the Dreaming” from HTTYD 2 is definitely not my favorite HTTYD song, but there are some really unique aspects to it that are worth discussing - some of which I’ve only discovered very recently (it’s the Dies Irae). I’m not sure if it’s there on purpose, but it 100% has the right notes. So here's another HTTYD score analysis: For the Dancing and the Dreaming (and the Dies Irae).
I didn’t expect to cover the Dies Irae in a HTTYD score analysis, but here I am. At least I have a little something new to say about it; I haven’t found anywhere else that someone has identified it in HTTYD (or Spider-Man: Homecoming).

Here's a comprehensive look at John Powell and Jónsi's For the Dancing and the Dreaming from HTTYD 2! I know this video is fairly straightforward, but I've had a lot of trouble getting it done and it's been delayed for months, so thanks for watching!

you pointed out that stoick's funeral theme in httyd2 is derived from the "dancing and the dreaming" theme and i don't think i'll ever recover
@FilmScoreandMore
@FilmScoreandMore 2 года назад
That's what makes it so sad and so effective. Powell really took that theme a lot further than just the singing scene it's introduced in. That would have been the last of it.

I personally love the dies irae and find that it really fits this movie well, because you can look at these movies as a world ending and a world being made through hardship and wrath over and over again. Seeing it be made a happy tune is rather intriguing, actually, because that can confer hope as well as sadness even on the darkest scenes.

As always thank you for putting in the time to make this video. John Powell is a master of crafting good love themes. All of the HTTYD love themes have incredible emotional power. His love Theme for Solo is another amazing love theme, which like The Hidden World love theme has a golden age quality to it. Probably one of my favorite love Themes of all time were written by Powell. I actually never realized the connection to Dias Ire. I wonder if Dias Ire is always used intentionally. I mean I know it is in Star wars and the Lion King. But it also appears in Jurassic Park and Rogue One etc. The Idea to reuse the Love Theme for the funeral is amazing. It gives this allready emotional scene a lot more power. I Hope we will see more of those videos. Maybe even on other Powell Scores.
@FilmScoreandMore
@FilmScoreandMore 3 года назад
Thanks for your praise! I just recently listened to the Solo expanded score and you're right about that love theme, it's really special. I'm sure all the Dies Irae instances you mention (and many more) are intentional, but you're right that this kind of raises a question of "Can it be an accident?" And yes, I'm sure using the theme for the funeral is a huge part of what makes it so effectively tragic. Thanks for stopping in and for your interest! It will probably be a while, but I do have plans!
@simonfrasch3066
@simonfrasch3066 3 года назад
@@FilmScoreandMore I can wait. Yeah you are probably right, that they are intentional in most if not all cases. But I could see someone writing a melody with the same 4 note motive. Well we'll probably never know.
@FilmScoreandMore
@FilmScoreandMore 3 года назад
I actually asked around a bit and I think someone told me they did it on accident. I guess it's like slipping into anything, and it is just four notes after all that just happen to have a very specific connotation.

@FilmScoreandMore
@FilmScoreandMore 2 года назад
Really? That's funny! You'll start to recognize it all over the place now. Any chance the piece was written by Berlioz? He's the one who put it in a piece hundreds of years after it was a Medieval plainchant, which led to its revival and spread through other pieces of music. Ninety-nine percent sure this motif was picked up with only slight modification as Omega's theme in 'The Bad Batch.' Its modulation in the season finale of that show is even better with this in mind (and vice versa).
@FilmScoreandMore
@FilmScoreandMore 2 года назад
Do you mean For the Dancing and the Dreaming or the Dies Irae? I just gave it a listen and I can kind of hear similarities for both. Also, John Williams deliberately wrote the Dies Irae into Star Wars, so you can hear it in many places throughout the scores.
@jacksonjames2489
@jacksonjames2489 2 года назад
@@FilmScoreandMore (Five months later...) 'For the Dancing' specifically. (Though, per your hypothesis, I s'pose it'd technically be both.) To follow up, if you've been watching 'Boba Fett' at all, especially after the second episode, chatter was 'Omega's Theme' could be heard at a couple of points. My updated question would be whether you pick up traces of the motif also in Boba's theme, which would mean that it wasn't so much 'Omega's Theme' people were hearing so much as it is that Boba ('Alpha') and Omega share a similar motif, Boba's version of it being a little less sentimental, a little more Western. Omega's is more lilting and legato, Boba's typically more strictly rhythmical, blunt and staccato. Anyway, I like the idea that their motifs would be 'twinned' this way, that they'd be more like two variations on the same theme than separate themes. Funny you mention the Dies Irae, though, cuz my favorite use of it in SW is when Anakin is in Luke's garage on Tatooine, where it's really prominent but in like an inchoate way before growing into the Emperor's theme and culminating in Vader. Funny, cuz this scene and everything Jango/Boba (movie and now show) are so bound up together (Tatooine, Kamino, Tuskens, all a' that). (And it all takes place right at the center of the trilogy, same location as most of its use in HTTYD.)
