Credit to Bloomberg for reporting this. Other MSM channels are completely silent. That said, the interview failed to mention several key things to downplay the significance of this: First, the chip is faster than average 5g phone more like 5.5g. Second, it has a two way satellite phone feature which is cheap to use and can call regular phones. Third, it was released during the US commerce secretary visiting Beijing.

The yield is extremely low and costly, they only produce this phone for political purposes for better bargaining power with the US. And probably china is backing them up to make up for the loss. The timing of the sanctions against Huawei was very telling, coming just months after Huawei passed Apple to become the largest smartphone maker in the world. Yes, there was a military pretext for the sanctions, but in fact these lower-nm processors are not really used for military applications as they are not very robust, and well-written software and hardware architecture can often compensate for the somewhat weaker computing power of higher-nm chips. Where the lower-nm (7, 5, and 3-nm) semiconductors find most use is in consumer applications like smartphones--which is exactly where the US wanted to hit China.

2/3 of Huawei employees are scientists working in R&D, most of them are PhDs. There is no surprise here. Not the first time China broke through the western sanctions. Remember when the west sanctioned Chinese arms industry after tiananmen? That is the best thing ever happened to Chinese arms industry. China arms industry today can compete head to head with the US and EU arms industry, and has surpassed the Russian arms industry. The same thing happen in the space. Despite US sanction, China is the only nation that has its own space station up there, the other one is ISS which is a collaboration of several nations. This chip sanction will only cause short term pains to China. But in the long term, it will force Chinese companies, even Huawei, to put more resources on developing its own tech and chips, something that the Chinese gov has persuaded the private companies to do for years, to no avail, they prefer to import the cheaper chips from the US, until the US start the blockade, now they see the merits of self reliance.

I thought with so many politicians and administrators, think tanks etc, that USA will know by now that threatening China can be likened to shooting yourself in the foot. USA threatened China over the GPS usage by china ships in the 1993 Yinhe incident and China start developing its own Beidou satellite system. USA did not let China participate in International Space Station (only country singled out) and China develop its own Tiangong Space Station. Now, USA uses sanctions to halt China's growing hi tech industry and China is now capable of developing its own 5G and 5nm Processor. USA must realize that cooperation with China will lead to mutual gains and unilateral sanctions on China will only work for a few years (after that China will start to dominate the entire global industry).

China would not release their technology if they are not ready for the next scaling up. I am pretty sure something is cooking in their technology pot. More breakthroughs are coming with their collective knowledge. I won’t be surprised they have started experimenting their EUV or near similar machine and in 3 years time, outpacing the current machine makers. Only time will tell. Once they have attained that level of success, they will be self sufficient.

Can someone explain to me why we as a society agree with the current course the west has gone on towards China? I mean it blows my mind that we are actively trying to technologically retard another nation. Like it's completely antagonistic and will do nothing but harbour bad feelings to a nation of like 1.5 billion people who now see the west as an archaic bully who is trying to maintain their status as global suzerain by any means possible (and make us look like complete morons when we fail). What possible benefit could this course have had, even assuming it worked perfectly, which it obviously hasn't.

When India became the first country to successfully send a lander and rover to the south pole of the moon last month, one British guy on TV told the Indians to return the economic aid they received from the UK government (I don't know if India still receives economic aid from the UK). This is how the Westerners react to any nations progress they perceive as a challenge to their hegemony. You will see this kind of behavior all over the media and internet.

This is v1.0 of mass produced and released of MIC 5/7nm. Meaning China is not more than 3 years behind. When China wants to, it builds out at an unbelievable speed. I can imagine the army of Chinese scientists and engineers relishing every breakthrough in crushing the American tech blockade. There are rumors of 2 more powerful Huawei 60 pro variants in the pipeline.
