Revisited this older video. Great stuff! Huber Solotone with the black tube is more pronounced than the white tube. Thank you, Josh.

Thank you!! Yeah, Frank makes fantastic mutes. I'm due to make some updated videos with his mutes, hopefully sooner than later!

I just want to write a little thank-you note on this video. I play in a silent film orchestra in Germany, and we're adding Chaplin's 'Modern Times' to the repertoire next month, which calls for three meg-a mutes. We play these films on period trumpets and, when possible, vintage mutes. Without the reproduction Meg-a mute from Huber we would have been out of luck.

Also, I'm a music teacher so I'm tempted to show this video to my students not only because it's so cool, but also as part of a lesson on sound, 3D modeling via SketchUp, and on what it means to be an entrepreneur! So thank you for the inspiration!

Awesome! Please share it with your students, they might find it fun. You may also want to share my mute handbook with them, you can get it for free by clicking the link above.

How would you compare the Huber to the Ingram cup? If you could only have one which would it be? I think I want to get away from my Jo-ral cup to a more classic sound.

Sorry for the late reply! Both are terrific mutes, but they do play/sound different and may be best suited for different purposes. They both play well and feel/sound even, but the character and build are different. The Ingram model has a wooden resonator and seems lighter in weight. The Huber model seems just a little brighter with a tad more focused/present articulation - so that may be better suited for unamplified section/ensemble work. It certainly has a more "classic sound" than the Jo-Ral. The Ingram model seems to be a bit more balanced articulation/core at the beginning of the note, but the overall sound is a slightly more diffused and warm. I'd probably use that one more for solo jazz work and certain big band playing (more traditional music/sound). Both are great modern options and are very popular. Between the two of them it really boils down to feel and preference - as they are both well thought out and designed. It really depends what type of playing you do, and what situations you'd be using it most.

@Josh Rzepka thanks. I put the Huber on my Christmas list and received it as a gift and might have to pick up the Ingram as well. I have several different horns, so might be good to have the mutes fit different horns.

The cup mute sounds pretty sweet. I may have to pick one up. The straight mute is genius. I agree that the heavier base sounds a bit better, but I think the lighter base may project a bit better or at least be heard more easily in an ensemble because of the brighter timbre. He better patent that design before someone steals it. I did notice a warmer sound from the vintage Mega Mute, but the low register would be a deal breaker for me. I'd take the new one since a mute that plays well across all registers is more practical than one that doesn't (this is also why I hate the Harmom brand wow-wow mute). I'm kinda lukewarm on the SoloTone. It sounds great, but a flat high register makes it no more useful for me than the SoloTones I already have. Does he have a website?

Yeah, some great mutes. The threaded base on the straight mute is pretty great, I'm excited to see what other attachments he comes up with. Overall his mutes project quite well, I believe the material is what makes them so bright, so they carry well. I try and avoid using a solotone all together, I usually use a mel-o-wah, or a cup-wow, they seem to play better in tune and project better anyways. I'm not a big fan of the back pressure that nearly every solotone has. Here's his site! www.fhubermusic.com/shop-trumpet-mutes

@@JoshRzepkaMusic Hi, have you tried comparing the Huber cup directly to Roger’s/Mutemeister Cup? Would be interesting.
@JoshRzepkaMusic
@JoshRzepkaMusic 4 года назад
@@dirkroesler yes, I have. Perhaps one day soon I'll make a video. The Mute Meister cup looks like the Ray Robinson, and it has a wooden resonator, but it's actually modeled after both the Ray Robinson and Shastock, so it's slightly different. It's also a great mute. I think the Huber is a bit brighter and projects a bit more.

The Ray Robinson hands down. The others, not much differences

RR is pretty great - can't go wrong with that cup sound. What mutes do you use?
