Treating a pair of Redwing model 2233 boots with Huberd's Shoe Grease. Huberd's Shoe Grease is a beeswax and pine tar compound that has been in use since the 1920's.
My dad bought me a pint of this for all my leather boots, heels, purses etc. I applied it to my doeskin gloves as well and it’s wonderful. Dad says grandpa used Huberds in Alaska when he was a logger; that endorsement is good enough.
I like to use a soft toothbrush to work it into the the stitching and seams because I just can't get it in there with my fingers. A small cotton rag can also be used to similar effect. Also if the leather is dry or old I put on a second coat about 3 hours after the first. Any that doesn't soak in can be wiped off later. I also use this grease on my leather gloves. Love the stuff - been using Huberd's for 10 years.
Just as a disclaimer when you say Tar product its pine tar. thats the resin from processing pine sap, not petroleum black tar. in case people wanted to know. this is my favorite product

Bought the 953's two years ago. I've loved them so far but had trouble with the lack of a true sole. Wish I knew these existed! They look just as great as the other ones with a better sole for my trade. Oh well, you live and you learn, and I'm happy
Wow, every "shoe grease" video is "how to apply" and "how to read a label". Yeah. I've been applying for 35 years, just new to Huberd's product. SO I DID FIND this in another commenters comments somewhere else: Obernauf's and Huberd's, same stuff BUT THAT Obies is formulated to keep fire-fighting foam from damaging your boots. And that's all I needed to know. Also, HUBERD'S goes on very quick and easy compared to most others too. Love that part, I see more Huberd's in my future.
Question; I'm a residential electrician who works on new construction, and my redwing 2406's went a solid 6 months of abuse during this very wet winter in Washington state. Yesterday I finally got around to conditioning them with Huberd's shoe grease. After applying a medium coat and waiting 24 hours I decide to apply another coat (they were in BAD shape haha). Unfortunately I applied the product without mixing it first (DOH!). My question to you Shawn is, should I be worried about applying a 3rd coat, and risking over saturating the leather? thank you for your time; and another great video. I'm a subscriber as of today. I don't think you could hurt your boots with over-applying Huberd's. Lay it on heavy and let it work. The leather sort of "takes what it needs" and if there's anything leftover that hasn't soaked in after a day, just wipe it off with a cloth and it'll be fine.
I usually do twice a year. Once before winter and once in the spring. But it really depends on the conditions in which you use your boots. If you wear them out in bad weather a lot then they might need more grease to keep them nice and water resistant.
