That must have been a fun day! I grew up in the paddock at Brands Hatch, as my dad was a weekend racing car driver, he raced Lotuses. He once had a Jensen in the same green colour. My mum had a Triumph Vitesse.
Hello, my name is [removed] and I also have a thing for wiper action. It all started when I was at school, when one day the plodding old Lodekka was replaced by a Duple Dominant 1 coach with these fascinating wipers... and I was never quite the same again. I did like the R8 Gordini and the 6R4 and the Ascona (their engine note reminds me of twin-cam Escorts) getting up the hill. The coach (AYS 9B) is a Plaxton bodied Leopard converted to a car transporter, hence its presence at this gig (yes, it really is nearly as old as I am) and it has (or had, at least) a constant-mesh box. I'll take the Simca, thanks...
Hardly ever see a Opel Ascona 400 rallye, but also see a Manta 400 rallye and a Chevy powered Vauxhall Magnum what a treat. I would have loved to have been there. Another thing I never seen so many Triumph Vitesses and Heralds parked in one venue, lovely.
Mr HubNut, the success of your RU-vid channel is entirely due to your finding delight in such things as the Citroen Dyane indicator lamps on that Renault 5 turbo nutter rally car..
Hi Ian Great video, love the older cars. They had more character than the rubbish that's made today. My first car was a Hillman Super Imp, would love to get another or an old VW beetle. Keep up the good work and love to see more vids on the invacar.
Love shelsley walsh, only been there for this years bromyard festival of speed but standing next to all the vehicles about to go up with engines on tickover was Glorious 😁
I love Shelsley Walsh - many happy memories of watching my Dad competing there in the 1970s in his 1955 Lotus 10, which had the 150 bhp version of the Bristol 2 litre engine and was pretty damned quick. Great video with good footage of track, paddock and car park. Absolute highlight for me was the Simca 1501 estate! Fabulous vehicle :)
Another great day out! I would buy the McLaren just for the wiper Lol. So many fine machines, I want them all. I wish the Metro given to me for free! had been a 6R4, going to and from work would of been such fun.
The last car in this video brings back memories. My very first car was a Simca 1501 saloon (in white). It could cruise very comfortably at 70 mph and give better than 40 mpg whilst doing so. For a car built in 1970 that was remarkable. It was also very light on tyre wear - the front tyres had to be replaced after 55,000 miles but the rears were still the originals (from new) and still had plenty of tread left on them when I finally traded it in against a Mini Clubman estate. The only real downside was that the bodywork was very thin. Thank goodness for chicken wire and fibreglass! I remember reading a Motoring Which? revue (presumably when the car was launched) which slated it, saying it was gutless and and had a very poor hill climbing capacity. They must have had a Friday Afternoon car (ah, the language we used to use to describe cars!) because mine was brilliant.
Alors. la fameuse Renault Estafette. Popular with Dutch grocers, cheese and fish merchants, who considered the VW bus not fuel efficient enough. Designed for French farmers for loading barrels of whine over the low sill at the tailgate. Very strong arms required to move the steering wheel at low speeds and fully loaded. And strong legs as well for the unassisted drum breaks. But after more than 40 years some of them are still going strong, converted into camper vans.
great vid ..thanks....have a 1974 simca 1500 special estate ...another feature was the boot floor could be removed ..flipped it up fold down the legs and you had a picnic table .... one of two that i know of here in irl & the other one is lhd
I worked for Bull Information Systems when Nigel Mansell (are you sure it wasn't Damon Hill?) was driving that Williams car. We were all excited at the Bull tree logo on the front spoiler blade. Part of the sponsorship deal was taking customers to the development centre to look around. I touched that car with my own hand back in the 90s!!
Whoops, didn’t see that! Maybe it was about that time that Damon Hill did that interview where he was asked if anyone would be able to drive his racing car and he just kept banging on about neck muscles. It was such an agonisingly poor interview that it’s stuck in my head forever.
My mate had a Rover 620 automatic years back. Very nice car. It rusted beyond APK (MOT), and he didn't wont to put money in it, so that was that. His next car was a 3 door Nissan Almera... I do like your 45 V6, very nice color too. You should repare the little dents and all, it will make a very nice daily driver.
A field full of BL cars all parked in no particular order. Just the way there were when they were brand new. Part of the production process was to sit in a field for 3 to 9 months, just to make sure that they were going to rust away before any serious mechanic issues became apparent.
I'd just like to add that this ancient tradition is being maintained by Jaguar Landrover, Bruntingthorpe airfield is full of the poor things waiting for someone to buy them. It's like a sanctuary for unloved, brand-new, luxury cars. From just £350 per month you can help these poor neglected cars find a new home with someone who will give them the love they deserve. I don't know how long they stay at the Bruntingthorpe sanctuary for sure, but I did recently see a Jaguar XF Sportwagon (i.e. the estate version) on an 18 plate. I worked for the company who installed the framer (that's the machine that holds it all in place while it gets welded together) for the Sportwagons, and it was de-commissioned in 2015 at the latest. This means that some 'brand new' cars were manufactured more than three years ago. This is why all us Hubnutters (just made that name up, I quite like it) drive round in old bangers! My guidelines for buying a car are 'mileage in six figures, price in three'.
Another fantastic vid Ian. Just one gripe. You ignored the Merc 190 with it's magical panoramic wiper goodness. You'll have to forgive me as I am slightly biased, having owned four of them :) I now own a W126 with it's very odd wiper set up hehe.
I find that the Triumph Spitfire is a beautiful design. It does homage to the Supermarine Spitfire. I was about to purchase one, but when they pulled out of the US market, I backed off.
Notice the Kiwi shaped head lamps on the McLaren too! Is Shelsley Walsh a race track? I'm a New Zealander and I'm not familiar with the more minor English race tracks. It looks very narrow.
I can almost smell the Castrol R! Triumph 2000 estates are right up at the top of my wish list in an equal position to the Ford Zephyr 6 mk 3. I love heralds and Vitesses too. That motorbike's a bit crackly, innit?
I'm definitely more into the classics at these shows than the rally cars. I really liked that Jensen Interceptor as they were sold briefly in the United States and worth big money now because of their rarity. It made me proud that you parked the Rover among the other British Jaguars. What's the difference between the Rover 600 and the Rover you drive? Not only am I a pantograph wiper freak now but I'm really digging Rover cars more and more!
Am I right in thinking your gimbal cannot keep up with the mighty fast cars? :D. I do like the gimbal but it does take some getting used to. Which one do you have? Looking at buying one as well. I do like that Renault Maxi Turbo which is weird as I generally don't like over the top cars. I never knew there was a Scimitar saloon. Bikes being annoyingly noisy again. Even at such an event. Typical. I do like the Rover 600. And, honestly, the Jensen too. Beautiful Simca. Love the colour.
Yeah, it wasn't great at panning. First event it has been to, so I was also still learning. It's a DJI Mobile 2. Other than the app taking far too long to boot, I'm pretty happy with it.
Simon here... That was a awesome video Ian, I had to watch it twice. Is this on every year as I’d love to go. There was too many to like and comment on as I’d want them all.
Wow, that was a awesome videosome nice cars there, its like turning back the clock to whatever year and seeing them race.that bump didn't look too good on that healey, was it.
Hoovies garage is getting or has gotten a broken McLaren mp4-12c, he said its still under warranty and has already had approx $150,000 worth of repairs.
Ian, should your subscribers be known as 'Hubnutters'? I am one and I'd say that we should be. Time for a ballot perhaps? No, sod that, let's have a bit of benevolent dictatorship and leave the decision up to you Ian.
