KevCentral I have a hill on my town that's behind a shop it's about a foot or so and I jump it on the boundary nothing wrong yet I even learned how to 180 on it with the hill
Huffy's problem is that Wal-mart won't let them build a bike that costs more than $300, so they can't build a bike that is as high quality as they were when we were younger.
With today's technology, that $249 bike should be able to hang with the professional bikes. No excuse that a bike cost so much when they are mass-produced by the tens of thousands per week.
@@Destin65 They intentionally make them unfavorable to upgrade so they can milk people at the high end range. There is no reason they can't make every aluminum frame the same as the top end ones
@@LTPottenger you got a good point. I guess it's like the planned obsolescence scheme, force people to have to constantly upgrade. Even video games are getting like that now where "free to play" game milk you to death and require you to have this dlc to play that content or you can't play with your more elite friends, etc.
You know as far as cheaper bikes.... I recently scoped out the low end GT bikes at Dicks. They look and feel solid! My first mtb was a $425 GT. Loved that bike
I'm from italy and 1 year ago i bought a mountain bike for 200 euros, it's a hardtail and it has double disk brakes, a decent seat, kenda 29x2.10 tyres. I've already fallen from it once and it took the incident really good, i'm happy with it.
The interesting part is that that same fork is used on darn near every name brand "recreational" mountain bike...it is pasically industry standard in the under $500 category. Giant ATX, Cannondale Trail7, Specialized Rockhopper & Pitch, Kona Lana'i ect.
All4Grogg sad really I have a kona that I’ve put a lot of money in and it has shitty sr suntors, but in like 2009 all kona bikes had fox or rockshox but all the kids care about is the brand so they can flex it at school
I had a xct 28 on my trek 3700. It really is a rock solid fork, runs well even if it's full of rust. I used it as my trials bike (lots of endos, drops and hops) and it worked fine. Yours was probably produced on a monday by a new worker :)
I think you may have been too harsh on this bike. It’s a $250 Walmart bike with a name brand suntour fork, double quick release, thread less headset, a decent shimano drivetrain with a cassette, double wall wheels, 3 piece chainrings, If the fork was working right, you could’ve swapped the stem and bars and pedals and had a fine trail bike
I think just like my Felt nine sixty that I bought new in 2013. Still rides good today, none of Walmarts bikes can last that long without constant repairs.
Huffy actually made a pro mountain bike in the 90's. I can't remember what it was spec'd for. Mountain bike action ran a complete article about the bike.
I read that article. They also produced high end team issue bikes. I don't believe they were available to the public. Retail valued around $10,000 in 1980's money.
A lot of people laughing, I bought the same model with all shimano stuff in 2015 to ride to my job after all these years I only used to change the tires, brakes and upgraded the crank set and some minor changes. It stupid to think this could be a pro mountain bike.
The paint job for bike is attractive. Were you there to witness the bike shop setting up the bike? Because its a freewheel bike, its not suited to ride fast in the trail. The Wheel was not meant for abuse. I have both swalchbe and kendas. The tire quality is evident. One is thicker than the other.
Look keV. We've gone through this before. They're super brakes, so the fact that they come on a 99 dollar bike is a bonus! They are so good that they even put them on bikes up to 300 dollars!
At 2:58 It is interesting how there are allen bolts mounted from the inside of the wheel hub. I have never seen that before. I do like the color scheme, that is about it though.
I watch Bike Mag's Bible of Bike vids and these...I have to say I enjoy these more like it's a guilty pleasure. Just pitching this - Try a Titan Glacier Pro. It looks funky but who else but you to do an entertaining review!
This I my favorite out of all bike channels I was skeptical to go out and spend even 500 bucks for a bike at the local bike shop trek dealer but now I love my bike I bought a hard tail online for 250 brought it to the bike shop got it put together I commute ever day on it and a small down hill trail what I realized was I got better at riding so I invested up graded parts each time its about 600 bucks now but I have four sets of tires helmet new brakes carbon fiber accessories pedals lights bottles grips front fork etc I literally try to brake it and the only thing I broke was the rear derailleur my point is I really appreciate your videos because for some one who doesn't know what mountain biking is or is getting into the sport it can be intimidating to go out and spend hundreds and don't even know how to change gears much less put air in the tire further more you might not like it or you might just need it for different reasons I hate when they do these videos with 1000 dollar plus bikes and tell people that's what they need what we need is information on value vs skills I grew with my bike got faster etc my buddy can take my bike and do wheelies all day I can't but I feel the need to go out and bye some kinda air fork because its lighter so then I can do wheelies wrong thanks for showing these videos because no matter what bike I get I'll know what to look for I was gonna buy a bike that cost as much as a used car because that's what you need right lol thanks bro how do I get a sticker keep riding
I got the same 3 years ago but in White I use it to ride to my my work in my 6 km town. I used to change the wheels, brakes, tires, seats during the first year but I love the frame and the Shimano parts which I upgraded. I'm not a pro user even I have mountains in my town and it has a good looking. I also changed the quick release system in both wheels because it broke so fast
I appreciate the heads up on Walmart bikes because I just bought a Schwinn Phocus 1600. I'll be looking for the el-cheapo parts or any mix matches. And yes, they put it together at the store.. I asked if I could observe, but the answer was flat out no. Go figure!
Watching all of these 4 year ago old early Kev Central videos on these pretty crappy Walmart bikes makes me appreciate my CO-OP DRT 1.1 even more, and Jan, Walmart bikes have come a long way! I always hear about that, but now I know why.
I'm personally happy with my huffy parkside. Ya i wish it came with a threadless fork for the sake of easy upgrade ability and making That bike My bike, but the frame is solid (albeit heavy) and for me part of the hobby of bicycling is working on the bike and make it better over time. That isn't to say 'buy a POS bike and slap five grand on it nononono...but for me? Fifty bucks here, thirty there? And slowly accumulate a small toolbox of specialty bits is part of the fun. for example: I scoped out a pair of new old stock delore hubs that look like just the thing to convert to cassette with. Probably will need to be opened up to regrease though. Assuming finances blow fair I'm going to buy those and a few other oodles and bits for a birthday project. Now if i had that five grand to blow? Oh heck ya I would in an absolute heartbeat, but I don't so I take what fun I can in the whole process of. Still wish Schwinn came out with a reissue of the cutback. Even if the price got upped to $150 it would be WELL worth it.
Thanks. The new XR-Pro is sitting in my living room. I planned on taking it to the trail this weekend, but other things came up. I'll get to it very soon.
I bought a Genesis 6061 bike from Walmart for $150 and the ball bearing ring broke in less than a month. I replaced the ball bearing ring and it broke in less than a month. I had the ball bearing ring replaced at a bike shop and it broke again in less than a month. Something about the design was really hard on the ball bearing ring.
I have no experience with big box bikes, but I'm pretty sure the "28" on that suntour fork means the stanchions are 28mm. Which (even back in the days of rockshox sid world cup forks), were flimsy. I can only imagine how much of a wet noodle an entry-level 28mm-stanchioned fork would feel.
what do you think about the frame itself and perhaps the double wall rims for a project bike? i bouth this bike for $120 few weeks ago with the idea of upgrading pretty much everything on it with amazon and aliexpress components. taking as reference your schwinn comp with red accents.
well, the frame was good and it had shimano altus, something you don't see on 250 dollar bike, the front suspension looked good, atleast it's not that zoom crap, you don't get 100mm on cheap bike very often
I can put a carbon fiber seatpost on it, but who cares if the rest of the bike is trash. It think that was more his opinion, some parts were just so bad, it wasn't worth upgrading/fixing those, and you might as well save money on a good bike in the first place. And yes, carbon fiber seat-posts are amazing for road dampening, but that doesn't mean it would be a massive improvement to my junk bikes, they are just that, junk that I don't mind too much if it gets stolen. (3 bikes stolen in the past 2 years at college, just ride crap and it doesn't get stolen as often, except at night when they can't see how bad it is).
Hey, dont knock the dork disc. I didnt have one on a Giant Boulder and shifted into too low a gear and destroyed my beloved Shimano Altus rear derailleur. Stranded, but it worked out OK.
thx for the videos but you need to stress the most important point of any bike: what purpose is it bought for. If someone uses it for the city this might be a much better bike then a carbon fully. A complete world of pain are parents who love their children but don't care about bikes, buying them cheap bikes and don't think about maintenance etc.
oh, about the detached feeling: for this frame size the stem seems too long, also the handle bar is about seat level which is a bit uncommon on mountainbikes.
yup, both of you are right but the bike in the video seems to have the bar to high and too much forward in relation to the seat. MTBs of the early 1990s had shorter forks and steering tubes, so the flat bar would be lower and stem from 110-140mm were very common. Modern bikes have longer forks, steering tubes, maybe additional spacers and a raiser handle bar (which was also common in the 1980s) resulting in a higher position for your hands demanding a shorter stem. In short: the higher the bar, the closer you want it to your body
That's not a singletrack bike. It says so right on the fork sticker. What's the cheapest bike that is trail worthy? And for what weight rider? What's the cheapest trail bike for a 290 lb with kit rider?
Looks great on film and probably great on paper but I'm sorry to hear about that XTC problem with the stanchions I had High Hopes And I was watching this video iTube attracted to inexpensive bikes however I have a new project coming and hope to have my own channel of someday he'll be a low budget inexpensive used bike Channel hopefully I can put together to do that
It looks weird, it's trying to have both distinct extremes of cross country and trail MTBs (rather than compromising). The rear triangle and handlebars look "trail-ish" while the front triangle with that 90 or 100mm stem looks "XC-ish" Look for a Fuji Nevada (70deg Headtube angle, 90mm stem) to go on sale, the 1.9s get down around $380 once they've become "last years model". I've had one for well over a year now, it has new Wheels/Deore Hubs, XCR Coil fork and currently window shopping for a 3x9 drivetrain (Alivio most likely). The bike is my form of transportation and I'm 6'1" 230 pounds.. Oh, Nevada 1.9s are freewheel while the 1.7s, 1.5s, 1.3s and 1.1s are freehub !
Try the Mongoose blackcomb I have one I got used and it's the best bike you can get from Walmart imho quando wheels low end rst coil forks and for a $300 bike it shreds my local trails pretty well
Years ago I spend $300 on an aluminum cannondale frameset not as nice as this one, so this doesn't look bad at all for the money. That aluminum frame is probably worth that. Like all Walmart suppliers, they have to meet a price point. Yes, there are compromises in that price ranges, but the bike is solid (have ridden them myself) and worth upgrading a bit if you wish.
I can forgive cheaping out on the components. So long as the frame is solid, deficiencies can be fixed over time. If the frame is no good, there's not a lot you can do.
Seeing these Huffy vids and how their bikes are today are a bit of a letdown. I had the old Huffy #56 bmx bike as a kid that went to hell and back. My current ride is a 17 year old 2003 Huffy Howler, good bike built like a tank and twice as heavy as the Nighthawk I just bought. Nighthawk is alright, but you're right about it not being a mountain bike. Looking at this Elite, it looks like a juiced up Nighthawk, frame looks identical to the Nighthawk, probably put some "more advanced looking" parts that really aren't in order to upsell it as a better bike when it's not.
I always thought you could shift gears on the front and the back. What if you had a short derailer system that was mirrored on the back wheel, one for the back sprockets and one for the front sprockets?
hi, i have the older version of same xct forks fitted on my bike since 2013 and its a hundred percent value for money,i mean it works damn right.on the other hand ,in this segment of products (cheap forks)i guess quality is getting lower and lower everyday...
I'm old af. I remember the old 20" bikes Huffy made when I was a kid, I doesn't surprise me a bit this new stem sucks, Back then they made their stems out of stamped sheet-metal, They squeaked to high heaven when you pedaled. lol you could hear them coming. Everykid over 50 years old knows that sound.
Too cheap is too dangerous in my view....for the money you spent. Get a used GT Avalanche or Trek Marlin 6. Least the parts and frame are mid range. A small investment gets you a great bike. Huffy is a bike you find in a ditch like Supercycle and CCM. lol Great video bro!
I had two really bad accidents from store bikes when I was a kid. After the second time at like 8 years old I personally decided to never ride a bike that wasnt name brand. Thats pretty sad and because of that I didnt ride again until I was older because I came from a poor family. I would get bikes for my birthday, but would have my parents return them. I learned at an early age money matters
Thats to much. You know last i checked you could buy a jessica 26 frame for around 100 bucks n they have sizing. With some shopping around and hand me down parts you could build something up for the same price as building that up
whats wront: flexible cranks, way too long stem, way too narrow bars, brakes, useless fork, the shifter/brake unit is not ergonomic, and will cause pain after few minutes of riding, all of which contribute to weird handling.
Well honestly not sure grew up with 26 never tested 27.5 . So what 27.5 Walmart hard tail is the best overall buy with the best quality features at the best price now in you opinion?
I love the racing bikes. Well road bikes. I never knew a bike could run 300 to 400+ on them either. Now I see the difference between walmart quality and the actual non walmart quality lol.
I'm not sure how often you respond to comments but if or when you happen to see this, please respond. I have a six year and when hes 7 I wanna get him a good mountain bike that he'll enjoy. Have any suggestions?
Anybody else notice that it looks like the front disc brake mounting surface isn't actually part of the hub? Seems like they just drilled out a high flange hub and bolted a disc mount to it. That seems extremely sketchy to me.......
It's a disc brake hub. Notice the larger center section for larger bearings. The disc brake mount just attached with screws rather than a part of the hub. Performance and durability are very similar.
I'm actually wondering if you could get this bike for $200, would it be better than jumping into a Cannondale if you don't need the bike shop? I doubt it.
+mexicool187 i have 5 functional Walmart bikes at the moment, so it’s better odds than that. But of all the bikes I’ve purchased from Walmart easily over 50% have had issues that resulted in return. Some were due to shipping damage, so that would also need to be factored in.
Shame about the forks they are actually a half decent make for that price of bike, in the uk suntour forks are on almost all decent carrera bikes and to get a decent carrera you are looking at around £350-400 so $249 which is around £180 isn’t to bad for what you have with that huffy it’s just a shame it wasn’t quite right
Carrera are still the lowest end bikes but theyre pretty good, imo you should spend a bit more and get some rockshox if you want to ride trails. But if youre just riding around town popping wheelies carreras are good
