We cut back on food months ago. Family of six. Four growing boys. No take out. No cereal, no chips. We never bought sodas or candies. Minimal condiments. Single family income, homeschool. So, we had to do it.

Yes! Meals are cheaper than snacks!

We recently started doing this as well. We do a lot of baking and fresh produce for snacks.

Amazing! I love how those that don’t homeschool will label us as privileged to be able to be a single family income, but they don’t see the sacrifices we make in order to make this possible. Good job! 👏🏽

To make the organic peanut butter feel like not organic, I use one beater on my hand mixer and mix it up really well. Then store in the refrigerator. Make sure to hold onto the jar super tightly as you mix. 😂

Grocery prices are ridiculous. I was just commenting to my husband how we bought 2 of every thing during 2020 and never spent what we are spending now. Ugh!!!

It’s insane right now!!! I go to 4 different stores depending on sales and coupons and what they sell because three of us have celiac disease so gluten and dairy free. I make our bread and so much from scratch. We do some snacks for the kids, but mostly whole, real food and I struggle to stay on our budget every month. We just can’t increase it being on one income and the fact that everything in life costs more now. We eat out twice a month on Saturday to give me a break and that’s it. We may have to go down to once if it continues. Just sending some solidarity. There are only 4 of us so I am sure it’s even harder with 6 people. 🥴 I tell my husband every month that I am thankful we can still buy healthy food even if it is a struggle now. Have a great weekend!

Part of our back to school checklist is doing a Costco run to restock. I prepare for it. I know it’s going to be more than normal but it still gets me. We were right there with you this year at a total of $1,050.91.

Oh yeah, I could see where you might could spend a little less here and there on a few things, but usually it's like not buying kodiak, bag popcorn or usaully boxed things. We had to do the same and stop buying so much protein, boxed things, easy convenience items, etc... I can't afford organic anymore either. It's so hard and we are so poor now.

Early September, after school begins we love to head to Trader Joe’s and nearby park for a day trip. They have fun fall treats which help motivate us for school!

The food is just brutal! Im starting to question if costco is really cheaper at this point 🤔 Single income homeschool family of 5 kids. We just suffered 5% paycut started in March and now can really feel it. Im praying things get easier sooner than later because even with our paycut he has an good paying job and i cant even imagine those with minimum wage jobs. 😢 We go without frills always have so i can stay home... but the food! We need food to survive.

I did not expect that price 😳 I did the price comparison on our essential food items, and in our area Aldi has the beat prices. They're about $.10 cheaper on most items. We also no longer buy ready made food. I pretty much make everything from scratch on the weekends and that has helped so much.

Not a homeschool mom, but we had to stock up in August too due to July travel and back to school. We spent so so so so much money. 😩😩😩 hoping September will be lighter now that we sucked it up and stocked up as we tried to eat through Kostyra everything in the freezer before leaving for our full month July trip.

I always wonder what the value is for ahopping at cosco. I have ine about 45 minutes from me. I usually shop at Aldi or Walmart. Can anyone weigh in on this?

It has been a few years since I compared, but generally aldi will beat Costco on most things. We have moved our membership to BJ’s and it seems that because of the rising food prices which have hit aldi too, I can find more things than I used to, that are cheaper at bjs than aldi. But it is typically on an item that is on sale and not it’s regular price. But for the most part, aldi wins overall. Hth! Maybe if you can look online, if Costco has an app, you can do some accurate comparisons. I still do really like having the big club membership and think it is useful. This is coming from a family of 13, with an $1800/monthly grocery budget. It used to be $1500, but food prices 😡

It's so painful to go to the grocery store anymore, especially with a larger family. I do similar to you - we stick with healthier items while looking for quick and easy for lunches and dinners during the school week. So awful that it costs so much of the household budget just to eat healthy.

Wow, Ashlee!! Way to get stocked up- that feels so good! But I'm so with you on the prices. It's depressing how much further our dollar went just 2 or 3 years ago. I have been contemplating getting a Costco membership again, but right now I shop pretty much exclusively and I don't think it would make sense for me to do Costo! I read your comment saying you don't have Aldi. I'm sorry! I really do think it saves us tons, but even there, there prices have gone up. :(

You should make a fruit salsa for the cinnamon chips… bomb!!! That’s what I make with it, also a party pleaser. I will send recipe if need (via the gram). All can be done in the chopper, less then ten steps.

It’s insane and sad how much food is right now. Went to Costco last week and for a family of 4 we spent $495, and that’s without meat. We buy our meat from our local butcher store. But still sooo much more expensive than a few hrs ago

Hi Ashlee, just curious is that fresh chicken going to be eaten in one week (I promise this isn't a chicken joke)? Or do you purchase fresh and freeze some for later? I only have one teen out of four children so not sure what is possible here.

Food is crazy high! I feel the price and we are only family of 5 with 2-3 that don’t eat as much as teens would 😅 My go to school lunches is “snack plates” usually 1 fruit (banana, sliced apple, strawberries, cutie), 1 veggie (usually carrots or celery with PB), 1 carb (crackers or chips), a slice of cheese or baby bel, and then salami, jerky or a few slices of deli meat. The kids like making their own and I make mine and grandmas and help them while they do theirs 😊. My kids are great about having water all day so I usually push milk with their meals. We don’t do sodas or juices which helps on groceries prices. I usually bake 1-3 desserts a week and have frozen go gurts so we don’t get candies and such and don’t feel like we miss out since we have treats throughout the week! 🎉

I no longer enjoy watching grocery hauls. It’s depressing! Good prices are outrageous! Costco and Aldi have the best prices in my area. Walmart is awful.
