my landlord growing up had an elderly mastiff named Zeus, he had this beautiful dark red coat instead of the usual tan and was the biggest sweetheart. He had no energy and had a twin mattress in the living room for a dog bed, the most energy he would use was to head butt your hip to pet him, or slightly pouncing to scare away birds before laying down again. They had a toddler and while they did yard work the dog would just sit next to the toddler the entire time happily smiling and drooling. He passed away around the age of 12 which is pretty old for these big guys, had a long happy lazy life

When my cousins were little they lived on a little dead end street. One of their neighbors had a big ole mastiff like Winston. When they first moved in, my uncle had met the man who owned the dog who told him all about the dog. One of the most memorable parts of that description was the fact that the mastiff had chewed through some electrical wiring when it was a puppy so he was a little off and clearly had some nerve damage. The man assured my uncle that the dog was perfectly docile and well behaved. Said that he was the neighborhood babysitter when the kids were out playing in the street. My uncle was wary about a 200 lbs dog with a few deep fried brain cells though. So my cousins were out playing with the kids in the street. One was riding a big wheel tricycle. She started to go off a little too far down the street and my uncle started to holler at her to turn around and come back when he noticed the mastiff get up off the porch and take off running after my cousin. My uncle panicked as he watched this dog run after his child. The dog catches up to her quickly... runs up and grabs on to the front tire of her tricycle to stop her. Then starts dragging her back down to the dead end part of the road with the rest of the kids. My uncle nearly had a heart attack. My cousin almost peed herself laughing.

I was just telling my groomer this morning this story!! A few years ago, about 2 in the morning, I was driving in a subdivision and I saw a huge dog in the middle of the road and cars were driving around it. I stopped infront of it. I opened my door to get out, and a giant Mastiff climed right into my back seat!! (it was a 2 door car) She was so lost and so sweet!! I went to a gas station to get her some water and to call our towns little shelter. I had to wait awhile for him to come and get her. Oh the big tongue kisses LOL! He was going to put her in the back in a cage, and I said, do you realky have to do that? She's so sweet! You don't have far to drive! So he put her up front with him! I went in the next day and her owner called and was coming to get her! I was so happy!

Winston actually got out a few months ago by accident and he went up to our neighbour and just followed him back to our front door. Startled the neighbour because he snuck up on them (he’s so quiet for a giant, also doesn’t bark) but they had a good laugh as they brought him back home. I watched the security cameras after and saw him just standing in the middle of the street wondering what he should do next 😅

My favourite breed I have ever owned, and I am a massive dog lover. They obviously can be very large, 36" tall at the shoulders and over 200 lbs in some cases. They are very low energy and only need a short walk each day. In fact, it is important NOT to overwalk them as it can encourage joint problems, something the breed is already prone to. Also, they should not be walked until at least six months of age. They don't eat near as much as you would imagine, probably due to a slower metabolism, but they do need to be fed from an elevated food and water bowl to help prevent bloat (the stomach twisting itself into two separate pieces, like a water balloon). They do in fact drool quite a bit, but particularly after drinking. They can be expensive when it comes to veterinary treatment. Personality wife they are nicknamed "gentle giants" and I found this to be very true. They want to be near or on you almost all the time, and they will hurt you by accident. Stepping on your feet, bashing you with their head, and for men out there keep an eye on that baseball bat of a tail when they are wagging it, it tends to be at a very "painful" level. They very rarely bark, are known to almost never bite except in extreme circumstances and while they are excellent protectors are rarely aggressive. They are pretty much just huge, loving, cuddle bugs. They tend to be very stubborn and training them can take a bit more patience than with other breeds. They simply need consistent training and a little more time but they get it eventually. You must be gentle in your training, however. They are very sensitive and even raising your voice can upset them, and certainly NEVER be physically aggressive with them during training. A scared dog can easily become a violent dog, and given that they have a bite force very nearly equal to that of a lion (about 700 psi) and with some members of the breed able to pull a couple TONS on a sled, you don't want this breed to become aggressive. It is VERY important to socialize them as puppies with other animals and people. This reduces the potential for aggressive behaviour as they become adults. Overall they are a little higher on the maintenance side, have a lower life expectancy than most breeds (about ten years), but are one of the most loving, loyal and endearing breeds out there in my opinion.

I own a mastiff and people need to understand how expensive these giant breeds are to own. You’ll buy the largest quantity of flea/tick and heart worm medicine and then double it, because these doggoes take two doses. Buy expensive dog food (and a lot of it) because they cannot be overweight or it plays havoc on their joints. But if you can afford it, an English Mastiff will be the best dog you’ll ever own.

@@paulbegansky5650 this isn’t necessarily true, one of the biggest problems is over feeding, if you can keep weight off of them they’ll live longer, + if you get from a good breeder and make sure both parents have good hips, elbows, and heart tests you’ll get a healthier dog. Also look for dogs that are outcrossed or have little line breeding. Some breeds also live longer, like boerboels and cane corsos. I’ve heard boerboels could live up to 14 years

We cook and freeze meals for ours. I reckon it cost probably around 25 dollars a week to feed a puppy and about 40 or so to feed an adult. Of course, we have almost no leftovers from any family meals (family of 5).

Used to have a delivery route where one house had 3 of these guys. Delivered dog food to them all the time. All of them were super friendly and all with their own personalities. One loved being petted, one just wanted to play, and the last one was very talkative. They also loved chasing my truck too. They lived on a corner lot and on a street I was on often.

When I was a toddler we had 2 mastiffs, one english mastiff and one bull mastiff, they were so much fun to be around and the bull mastiff used to get up while I was cuddling him and walk around while I clung to his back like a confused barnacle lol they're so calm and nonchelant about everything.

I always hope my toddler will remember Winston when she's older like you do! I hope he also lives long enough so they can grow up together. I always say it is quite special that our little girl gets to grow up with a giant dog in her house--not a lot of babies get to experience that! It is extremely special.

@@theemanfamily Yes I so agree! The female used to grab my sister and I by our clothes and carry us back to mom when she thought we were getting up to no good or in danger lol I remember them so fondly! It's also the first loss you go through, as large breeds don't live that long, so by the time I was in first grade both were over the rainbow bridge. They were truly the most incredible nurse-dogs and so lovely growing up with them!
@theemanfamily

@@mikacakes must have been so hard for you to experience that. I lost my first dog at 8 years old, he didn’t live long. Died at 2 years old, I still talk about him a lot. He was the exact same temperament as Winston, but in Lab/GSD form. 🥹 so glad to hear that mastiffs make the best nurse-dogs!
