My partner and I watched your videos every night before bed. He passed away in September 2022… this is my first year without him. Your ration videos were his favorite. Just wanted to thank you for posting and Happy New Year!
So, I have an instant coffee tip- reconstitute the granules first with cold water - the hot water actually injures the freeze dried granules. Once rehydrated then add hot water. It totally changes the flavour of the coffee !
I always love seeing international MREs. My dad was in the army for 20 years and one of the first things he did when going to a new country was trade MREs with the local soldiers. They were just as excited and curious as he was. It seems to be one of those universal, human things we all share. I find that comforting.
As a canadian... I think than those Arctic Dutch Ration are impressive...could have this at home, in case of power outage during winter! They look amazing compare to many others!
The Dutch army uses two types of rations - a regular ration and an arctic ration for cold-weather operations. The packaging for the regular ration is made out of cardboard while the arctic ration is packaged in a plastic pouch. The arctic ration contains freeze dried meals and porridge for breakfast and has a higher level of calories. The Dutch Army also has an emergency ration but these are only supplied in time of war. They contain dry blocks similar to the Datrex or Mainstay survival bars.
I love that they included the vitamin D3 because of the potential for lack of sunlight. Very forward thinking. Most impressive and comprehensive ration pack I've seen. Kudos to the Netherlands!
Research suggests everyone can use extra D3, even up to 50 times the daily amount. And it has a slew of potential health benefits. Makes sense because our bodies were evolved in sunny climates, we spent all day outside with few if any clothing.
This is not vitamin D. It is D3, totally different. Vitamin D helps with calcium and phosphorus retention whereas vitamin D3 helps your body absorb the energy from the food being digested. Makes perfect sense in this case as long as you do not take too much.
As a young man in Uncle Sam's service I completed Arctic ( a.k.a.Cold weather ) Survival ( a.k.a. S.E.R.E.= Survival , Escape , Resistance and Evasion ) training and one of my memories was always being hungry and cold .We would easily consume 5000 calories a day of C rations and a locally manufactured Pemmican ( a mixture of suet , dried meat and dried berries ) and it was never enough , you could never eat enough to keep warm due to your metabolism running so high.
Thank you for going through all that, and for sharing the assurance with us. Even sheltering at home, when it gets chilly, I get hungrier. In the harrowing frost, I, too, would be glad of the suet, and eat it all.
That's why we have the seal hunts. People don't understand that. High calorie food is needed and a way to control the seal population that is decimating the cod population.
@@LifeOfNigh And that's yet another reason not to be in favor of forcing everyone to go vegan, and to leave that as a personal choice. As if the fact that various disabilities can make veganism impossible for some folks wasn't reason enough (and sometimes it's down to the way a specific person's disability manifests and not a universal trait). Because if you have to kill animals for a good reason, universal veganism would just mean all of those animals end up in the trash and contribute to the landfills, when some could have otherwise been eaten and provided food.
As someone who really hates salty stuff, I think this MRE would be a dream compared to most of the ones reviewed where things are super packed with salt. The isotonic beverages can keep your salt levels safe, and don't forget they gave you salt packets to add to taste!
As a collector and reviewer of rations, I have to say that the Dutch 24 hour ration is one of the best. A ton of food, comprehensive menus and side item choices. Lastly, the drinks are tasty and plentiful. Thanks for sharing :-)
As someone who lives in the Netherlands, its p interesting to see how some of this stuff is actually pretty similar to things you could buy in the stores here. Like the biscuits, the tomato soup and beef broth especially is familiar enough I could name brands that look like it haha. Also not surprising the spicy sauce wasn't very hot! We really don't eat or are used to spicy food at all. It's fun to see how you really can tell this is made for the stereotypical Dutch palette
@@user-sk4nt5bm5r Yeah, there are a lot of Dutch people who have a high spice tolerance because their traditional cooking is spicey. But in restaurants the taste is usually adjusted to the typical Dutch palette - not that spicey. There's nothing wrong with that, we just aren't as used to it.
@@user-sk4nt5bm5r yes there are but as an immigrant, the Dutch palate in general is very bland. I was very surprised by this when I moved. Thankfully due to the other cultures here, you can get access to good spices and flavour but just look at traditional Dutch food. It’s bland, no offence but it is. Everything labelled spicy here is not even remotely spicy
The Vitamin D3 makes sense given the potential lack of sunlight where they are deployed. I love this ration amongst those you have previously reviewed.
Watched this with my hubs, an Army Vet, who absolutely gobsmacked at the variety and flavors that were included in this hahah (out of pure jealousy 🤣) The amount of chili mac and infamous “vegetable omelets” he ate in his rations still make him shudder hahah what a nifty exploration - thanks, as always, Emmy!
I’m Belgian and we have a lovely cuisine. I live 30 minutes car drive from the border with the Netherlands and their food is even better than ours! More variety. Lots of exotic and Indonesian influenced food
Hot sauce cures a multitude of culinary ills. The beef bullion probably would be good to flavor the potatoes. It would give it the salt and extra flavor. I don't think I would add the whole thing but some could work
I do not understand that inclusion. Salted nuts and the isotonic drinks would provide plenty of electrolytes. And there are tons of hot drinks in there. The only part of the ration I don't understand
Emmy, I'm surprised you've never tasted apricot jam before. I'm surprised because apricot jam is a frequent ingredient in many main dishes --things like pork chops glazed with apricot jam, it's also included in some chicken glaze recipes. Highly recommend!
I’ve never heard that apricot jam is frequent ingredient in many main dishes. But you said just pork chops and chicken and I’ve been to many restaurants in different states and invited to friends or families homes and there’s no apricot jam in their main dishes, not even on pork chops or used for glaze on chicken. Maybe it depends where you live. Some people don’t like the taste of apricots or apricot jam. Don’t be surprised when someone hasn’t tasted it before, to each their own. My mom loves apricot jam and plum jam but only on her toast. 😁
I love love your videos! Your vocabulary is refreshing. The way you explain every little tidbit of flavor, textures, even the packaging.. You're just so satisfying in the way you execute your videos. I'm a huge fan of yours. I've been watching your videos for a loooong time. They're my go-to when I'm looking for something to take my mind off things. I appreciate you. You're awesome! 👍👍👍👍
Love these ration taste test videos. May I suggest the Compact Provision's BP-5s Emergency rations. One box feeds an adult for one day. It may also help to bring light to how these rations are distributed worldwide during disasters and is currently being used in Ukraine. Maybe even a 3-day challenge trying it both dry and as a porridge.
This actually sounds super tasty! Like with MREs I know you have to adjust your expectations, you're not comparing to home cooking, but this with all the snacks and drinks seems genuinely nice?? Like I'll take dinner being reconstituted if I get hot cocoa and tomato soup and Nutella and pb and cashews and teas and biscuits!
In my country, South Africa, Apricot jam is our staple jam and I love it. It is used in pastries and puddings as well as we prefer that slightly tart taste to the overwhelming sweetness of strawberry jam. Our peanut butter and jelly is also done with apricot jam
@@jasonrhodes9683 if they're in cold weather they're going to need the extra calories to stay warm. and i would imagine that the plastic can keep the weight and size down.
"it's not spicy, kind of like a curry..". As a born and raised (smalltown) Dutchie, I can tell you most of us are not at all accustomed to spicy food. We mostly(/originally) grew up with boiled and/or steamed potatoes, veggies, some meat and a light gravy as a weekday meal. I never had anything spicy growing up. The first time I used a seasoning like chilli flakes was when I was already in my 20s 🙈
That's such a huge amount of food and caffeine, feels like it could be a 48h ration, but I guess if it's cold and you travel through snow... feels like you could spend the whole day eating though 😅
I love your reaction to the soup! You should try the other flavors if you like those crunchy croutons! But it is usually not in a bowl but in a cup! It is actually called cup a soup.
Between the generally high caloric count of 24 hr military ration packs (since they pack enough for someone who is being extremely active while potentially carrying lots of heavy stuff) and the fact that when it's cold you need way more calories to do the same level of activity, you are definitely set up for an absolute feast for the average person
May I recommend: if you ever travel in the South of France (not necessarily Provence) look for apricots. I ate an apricot purchased from a stand near Le Gouffre. It was as big as my fist. When I bit into it, the juices ran down my arm. Apricots are next level peaches, if you can find good ones.👍🏻💯🤗💋I have never found a decent apricot stateside…I believe they exist-most likely in your region. Please, do some research. A good fresh apricot is like nothing else. I learned that as a true surprise.
No the tomato soup and beef bouillon are meant to be prepared in a cup, it’s like a in between fast hot soup drink, mainly office people drink them and people who want to lose weight since it’s around 30cal per mug. The main brand we use in the Netherlands is cup-a-soup
This one was a blast! You have a way of making things I would never eat seem enticing. Ramen, for instance. I have never liked it, or Cup Noodles, but you make it look delicious. You should be a food critic! Happy New Year.
Happy New Year, Emmy! This is the earliest I have ever caught a video. My 11 year old son and I love your videos! You are such a precious person! Thanks for being you ❤️
As it is always the case with your videos your love for the subject shows. Hope that does not change in 2023. Have a wonderful year Emmy. Thanks for the smiles and the learning you provided in 2022. Here is to new year.
Yay! Currently learning Dutch and I love learning about new cultures so when I saw you posted this I was high over the moon to watch 😂 Happy New Years Emmy! 🎉
Here's a completely useless, but hilarious phrase the Dutch actually use, if you don't already know it l: "Helas pindakaas." It means "unfortunately, peanut butter." As I understand it, it loosely translates to "It is what it is."
Summary: A total of 29 edible/drinkable packets. 7 were protein (2 meat/carb meals, 2 nuts, 1 peanut butter, 1 beef soup, 1 whey powder), 1 was vegetable (tomato soup) the other 22 bags were essentially sugar.
I'm not 100% certain, but I think that the Beef Bouillon was supposed to go with the Beef and Potatoes. That would have given you the salt that was needed. Otherwise I agree with all of the rest of this review.
That was a considerable amount of food. The soldiers can’t be permitted to starve to death.. Emmy even just tasting a bit of each is a daunting task. HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎆
Hi Emmy, Don't know if you know this but RU-vid has flagged your video. Giving it a warning about conting topics relating to suicide or self harm. Serious have no idea how RU-vid manages to get these things so wrong. Hope you have some luck contacting them to have the flag removed. Thanks for your awesome work, really love your channel :)
When I have chocolate bars that have bloom, I have had success carefully heating them a bit in the microwave. Timing is important because it's easy to melt them all over the place. After heating, let them cool.
You know that says "Artic" Emmy. They have to share with the polar bears😉🐾 fabulous ration vid tho! These are some of my very favorites of your playlists. Perfect for a kind of quiet NYE. Thanks Emmy! Take care and Happy New Year to everyone.🙏🎉🌷
I’ve been watching these videos since 2015, from when your channel name was “emmymadeinjapan” -Love you Emmy, Hope you and your family are doing well and healthy ❤ Happy new year!
So to just to explain alittle. It's common for the Dutch to always drink coffee with a biscuit. And also in the winter to have soup as a later afternoon snack. And its common to drink warm tea with your lunch and dinner meal.
I love your expressions and commentaries for all your videos! My mom and I watch every Sunday after lunch. Keep doing what you are doing, it’s so enjoyable and entertaining. Like this MRE!!
apricot is my favourite jam!!! crazy that you haven't had it, it's quite popular here in germany and surroundings :) my mom makes it in the summer and its the best
Aww man I love Emmy’s MRE videos-- let alone any of her videos! Anytime Emmy describes something’s shes eating… I feel like I’m eating too! Lol she describes things soooo well
If you can find it, Gatorade, here in the states, does make a green apple flavor! it's my favorite but it can be a pain to find!! This 24 MRE looked absolutely delicious!!
I would bet they expect that the meals are had at meal time and every 2/3 hours they have a snack and drink. Or they seperate it into 4/5 mini meals. Especially one right after waking and a nice warm filling one right before bed so their body has energy to keep warm. Nice video. Love the unboxing for the same reasons.. love the surprise element.
Fun fact, they don't just add sugar to cranberries, they also add oil, generally sunflower, because they have such a dry texture. Kinda gross in general BUT, great way to add calories in a ration.
😂 so I’ll go ahead and say that the cinnamon roll is my FAVORITE thing that comes out an MRE. It’s far better than half the shiiii they throw into those meals. Like you’re stuck in the woods for weeks? Those things are to lift your spirits up with a nice cup of coffee.
These cold weather meal mains tend to be lower in sodium and need salt to taste normal. It is my understanding that they reduce the salt content due to the higher need for water in that dry environment. That’s also why there are so many drink mixes included.
