We were impressed by this huge Baltic ferry navigating through a narrow path between two islands in Suomenlinna. A monster of 13 decks named Serenade owned by Silja Line, capable of transporting 2,852 people and 450 cars!
By looking at this enormous vehicle, I realised I should not complain when I find a narrow parking for my car.

Yes or i should say (now when im a bit smarter) there is two ships in Helsinki every day. 1 from viking Line and 1 from Silja (prefer viking) and they arrive at Helsinki around 10:00 and depart around 17:00 so they passes that part two Times a day and its always a Ship every day that passes there. Sorry for being ”rude” in my opinion☺️

As a young person in the 60-70's I always went Viking Line! Now I actually prefer Silja Line's boats, because in my opinion they have better restaurants and bars and better place in the harbor in Helsinki.

I have navigated this narrow a hundred times years back. The challenge here is that the fairway makes a slight turn both in and out from the narrow. You need to be lined up correctly to be able to make it. A bit challenging when you are there for the first time. Speed is 12 knots here...

If you have ever worked on the bridge of a modern ship, you would realize this is no big deal. The speed involved provides maximum steering ability without sacrificing safety. And as so many others have stated, this is probably a daily occurence.

Nordic people are very skillfull sailors.I once had a Swedish Captain who did away with a pilot when we sailed through The Sound on our way to the Baltic Sea from the North Sea.The company saved a lot with that skillful display of seamanship , in return the company sent us a box of flounder while we are still at sea.I still remember it vividly for i was the one who hauled those fishes aboard.I asked the officer why on earth we had to slow down a 45,000 ton woodchip carrier just for a box of fish LoL...

I have been on that boat (and or her sister ship Symphony) severel times over my years and while the passage its tight its a thing those ships do on a daily base on theyre travel between Stockholm and Helsinki. But if you like that sort of stuff you should take a look of some of the inland passages in the Stockholm and Turku/Åbo archipelago. It is a tight fit more than once. Also the boat is about 200 meters long and 30 meters wide so its not super huge compared to modern cruise liners. Johan.

Looks a lot easier than travelling through the "Active Pass" on Canada's West Coast going through the Gulf Islands between Vancouver Island and the Mainland of Canada which is a Z shaped route going around between two islands, then a sharp turn to travel north a bit, before a sharp right to go between two more islands.
@maolsuperstar

The difficulty here is that it is very narrow. You are right that Vancouver Island has more complexity. I was there this summer, let me see if I can publish a video...

Wouldn't be worried about the width of that canal, but the DEPTH. I'm sure divers have gone down and recorded every inch of that inlet. You don't risk a ship costing hundreds of millions.
@KimmoHintikka
@KimmoHintikka 3 года назад
These ships(there are multiple) go through this path at least 10 times a day and have done so for decades. I think they would have noticed by now if it was too shallow. Helsinki is actually where it is because of this geography. There dotted islands in front of it which make it easy to fortify and protect against naval attack(Helsinki became capital 1809). Between these islands see is deep so event big ships can pass as long as friendly. This video is taken from Suomenlinna which is a large fortress island in front of Helsinki specifically against unfriendly navies during 1700 - the 1800s.

@hurri7720
@hurri7720 4 года назад
It's not the cliffs that are the problem for the guys on the bridge and behind the wheel but at times there are lots of small boats going through too at the same time, also in high winds in a storm they will have to keep some speed not to give the wind time to affect them. And there is an other route too into Helsinki South harbor.
@21mhz
@21mhz 4 года назад
The other route can only be used by shallow draft vessels though? As far as I remember, only smaller high speed ferries used it, and there are none of those left now. Damn, we'll be lucky if Silja and Viking survive COVID-19.

The John o'Groats ferry used to enter the harbour through a narrow channel (things may have changed now, this was 30 years ago) . Although it was a much smaller vessel, the channel was proportionally very much narrower than this - and with a strong cross wind it had to come through this channel at a hell of a speed to have any steering, and then hit reverse before it got though to avoid hitting the far end of the tiny harbour. It was a splendid sight when it went well. But the front of the boat had some pretty big dents.
