Vladimir Navokov has said in interviews that he doesn't consider Lolita to be a love story but the furthest thing from it. It is a phicological horror book where you are forced to see the world through the perspective of a pedophile. The fact that it is beautifully written just adds to the discomfort, as the reader tries to grapple with the fact that they are somewhat enjoying this disgusting story beacause of how poetically it is written
i understand if you didn't like it, it is a very hard book to read, but i hope the misinterpretations and romanticization of the book promoted on the internet didn't compleately shape your opinion :)
He also did not at all want a girl on the cover, the original one was just straight up green without anything on it and now almost every edition has a cover with a girl on it which is so maddening to me
Wow, thanks for this. I was hesitant on whether to read it or no but I think I'm going to give it a chance when I'm in a good mental state because I really want to see it through my eyes and read it with an analytical and literary eye
3:20 Nabokov is one of those writers whose style isn’t necessarily complicated but the theory behind is very complex. He never intended to be a moralist with any of his novels, he famously said “I’m no messenger boy” which explains why he gives Humbert wide range to express his sick infatuation. Lolita has been read in the light of a “romance” but I think that Nabokov used the theme of a depraved love to mock and warn how toxic and perverse the idea of romantic love can really be.
I read Lolita as a deeply immersive character study. It's unrelenting and upsetting, but the fact that it never lets up really forces you into this character's head. Which is not at all a fun place to be. The romanticization, I think, is the point. The character really sees himself as some kind of noble victim who's been enthralled into his perverse desires and his attempts to elevate them are really just his desperate fumblings to paint himself as anything but the pathetic, sad, immoral criminal that he really is.
I never comment (bc ✨️anxiety✨️) regardless of the fact that I watch your videos RELIGIOUSLY BUT Since you started watching One Piece I have been itching to say something! Because that anime changed my life, supported me through a very hard time, and also made me fall in love with anime in general. I am 99% sure that I know what scene you are talking about when flipping through volume 3, AND LET ME TELL YOU, THAT scene was the point where I stopped just watching One Piece and completely, absolutely, unapologetically fell in love with it. It is sooooo good that you started it, I am impressed at how quick you are going through it (it took me 2 years to catch up with it, and back then the episodes were still in the 8/9 hundreds). You are going to sob so hard, but it is worth it. I love your content and thank you for this amazing space where I can always feel comforted and just happy to hear you talking about things I also love (books and anime). Love u💜
My mum sung me that lullaby too haha! The version she sung to me went Rock-a-bye baby on the tree tops When the wind blows the cradle will rock When the bell (*bough) breaks the cradle will fall Down will come baby cradle and all Its disturbing to think back on this lmao
I woke up in a bad mood and started watching your video and felt better instantly ❤ and I love how long it is because I just watched the whole thing as I got ready for work😊 I’m currently reading a graphic novel called The Magic Fish and I like the art so far
Girl, I devoured this video thinking it was a 20 minute vlog and it was an hour!! I love watching you go down into the one piece world and danmei novels! 🎉🎉
It's so good to see you again, bella, I've just returned from a 2 week vacation and during this time I've read 4 amazing books: these infinite threads (the 2nd vol of this woven kingdom series which I really recommend) aaaaaand the cruel prince series !!!! which I absolutely ADOREDDDDD
Me vibing to the background music at 22:56 *Oh my, oh my God 예상했어 나 I was really hoping that he will come through Oh my, oh my God 단 너뿐이야 Asking all the time about what I should do*
I didn't get to watch this yesterday because i went out socialising and didn't get home till midnight, now after another incredibly long day in a way too warm classroom i am finally home and i can finally watch this and turn my brain off and get motivated to read (because i feel like i'm not getting anywhere and i have so much to read and so little energy)
Your videos are always a fun time. I like watching people update their planers/ notions. When I got into Attack on Titan the manga had just finished and I was too impatient to wait for the anime so I binge read the whole manga. Hopefully your reads keep getting better. 😊
I was saving this vlog for a time of need and a time of need it is right now (I'm feeling sad and lonely in the club tonight ✌) Don't mind me, i will just be commenting as I watch. I'm currently re-reading A room of one's own !! For a bookclub, I'm taking so many notes, my Lettres Modernes brain really got activated by just the first sentence. My love mix-up is indeed PERFECT for fans of Heartstopper. I also recommend They hate each other by Amanda Woody, which gave me the same kind of vibe : cute and funny and awesome friend group and awesome romance but also important stuff talked about and a focus on mental health. I read it in one day and loved it. That bookmark is so cute !! I just have a few minutes left of this video now, the hour really flew ! I knitted while watching it and I'm feeling a bit better now, so thank you for sharing it ! 💛🌙 For the show recommendation, I will actually go with an actual play : Fantasy High, from Dimension 20. It's a bunch of comedians playing dungeon and dragons with a 70's (? or 80's ? who knows, not me) suburbs high school in the States. It's funny, awesome, incredible, and a great introduction to dnd (one of my strongest hyperfixation) (for my latest hyperfixation, that would be Stray Kids) And now that my brain is being a bit less mean with me, I might go and pick up A room of one's own again ☺ again, thank you for posting, for the way you talk about books, hobbies, and feelings and life.
No longer human is one of the best books I read this year. Cant wait to hear your thoughts about it. Highly recommend not bringing it on a trip, it's quite a depressing book. 😊😊
I could literally watch you talking about One Piece for 2 to 3 hours, cuz Bella you and One piece are the only ones that I love now. I'll recommend the live action of My love mix-up which the name is "kieta hatsukoi" it's really cute and wholesome show with just 12 episodes I think.
🌙you don’t realize how much you’ve missed the vlogs until you get to watch one new tho 🥺 🌙i think a professor of mine recommended to watch succession and now i am even more motivated to do so 👀 🌙the unboxings, the reading updates, the editing :bitelip: 🌙stunning vlog as always
I watched a couple of episodes of mad men!! It’s different because the focus is different but the characters definitely have similarities between them 🫣
No but when you were thanking people for sending the books and saying you'd do "ANYTHING" for them you really gave off the vibe of Pimento from Brooklyn 99 when he was laying down the ground rules and i love that🙌 Also what's up with traumatizing lullabies?! I grew up in a post-soviet country and my mom sang me tili tili bom(famous lullaby)...needless to say i grew up just fine*nervous chuckle*
I just can't stop watching you, the quantity of emotions you show in a minute. You are soo funny, and your love towards book is amaizing. I'm just giggling and laughing with ou and at you.
I’m literally struggling so bad with my mental health rn but watching your videos really makes my day. thank you so much from the bottom of my heart 🌠🌿
I have to give you this recommendation because I’ve been loving this series so much, the Fireborne series by Rosaria Munde is so incredible! You should definitely give it a try when you want a fantasy (with small romance)!
bella, it’s super random BUT i’m now reading a book that makes me cry A LOT and whenever i start crying for some reason i remember clips of u crying over books and feel less alone lol 🥲 anyway so excited about the new video
I find it fascinating that latin america countries and spain sing lullaby to their children and britain read children bed time stories because in my country we just lost ourselves in our thoughts to sleep😅 and my love mix up is so funny and heart warming, plus theres a live action drama!!
Slavic lullabies have that threatening message too😂 I don’t remember the exact words but it’s something to the end of: “don’t sleep on the edge of the bed or a grey wolf will come during the night and bite you” lol. On Lolita. I remember I read it when I was a teenager. And it was sick to read but to this day it is still one of my favourite books. Nabokov makes you see things from a pedophile’s perspective where Humbert justifies everything he is doing and almost makes Lolita a perverted character and not himself which was just fascinating to read,oh and the writing was beautiful. So even though Nabokov is not stating on every page how wrong this is you just know you are reading from a perspective of a very sick person and see things how he views them and that they are indeed wrong wrong things. I hope that made sense)
If you haven't watched it yet there is a series version of heaven officials blessing. It covers the first volume and there is a second season coming out in oct.
fun fact: i minor in media studies and in one of our lectures, it was mentioned that Succession was a show that was developed intentionally to be “binged”. Meaning that the way each episode and season ends is planned in a way to make to viewer NEED more. Looks like they succeeded very well in that idea 😂
I didn't know North & South was a book adaptation?! I watched the series with ny parents a few years back and I remember bawling my eyes out by the end of it. I'm curious what you think of the book! If it's good, I might consider getting my hands on a copy too 🤭
When doing research on Lolita, make sure to read and look at some of Navakov's interviews and writings on his own book. The whole book suddenly started to make sense when I understood how complex the story really is.
@@throneofpages another story by the same mangaka is "Monster" that has an anime adaption and it's on netflix!! both stories can be a little slow in the beginning but the plot twist are immaculate and surpirsing after the build ups 😶🌫‼
Everytime you post a vlog the unread manga on my shelves stare at me a little harder and it always makes me want to pick ‘em up more lol I need more time in my daayyyyyy😩
BELLA! so, girl i don't know if you've watched these, therefore i'll just dump a bunch of series to choose from :D i'd recommend watching Beef, Stranger Things, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Lost, The Leftovers, House MD, Prison Break, Deadwood; and as for lighter content it would definitely be Gilmore Girls, Desperate Housewives, Ally McBeal, Fleabag, That 70s Show, Firefly!!! enjoy!
You giving Family Lore 2 stars makes me soo sad because I was highly anticipating that book!! 😭If I do still want to pick it up, I'll probably borrow if from my library then.
DO I SPOT BEARTOWN ON YOUR READ LIST THIS MONTH?! How have I missed your August TBR... i am obsessed, I am currently finishing book 2 of the series and I cant wait to hear your thoughts ❤
I love the fact that lullabies in my country are about little grey cats and in Latin America, they're about monsters devouring children Also, can I ask where did you get that cute version of NewJeans' OMG, it's so ear-pleasing
i am so glad you enjoyed my love mix-up 🥹💗 thank you for a full hour of content, i always love to see you smile when you talk about the things that make you excited. i hope you never lose your enthusiasm about the stuff you like ☀
Girl u NEED to watch Manifest it’s about this plane that disappeared and came back 5 and a half years later…it’s so addicting I binged up to season three in a few days and I can’t decide if the acting is good or it’s so bad that it makes it entertaining????
"Nevermoor" by Jessica Townsend is on of my favourite book series of all time. Book 2 is my favourite by far but book four is being released in the next couple of days and I'm SO EXCITED!
@@throneofpages nvm, just realised it’s this time next year… I’m so upset! 😢 oh well, I guess I’ll just have to re-read the first 3 books again before next year.
you mentioned mafia fantasy and i gotta say please watch/read Bungo Stray Dogs if you haven’t yet! especially now that you’re going to read no longer human!! every character in BSD is based on an author and their magic ability is inspired by their lives and works, Osamu Dazai is one of the main characters and i love him. literally best anime ever. (also, como olvidar esa canción de cuna jajajaj un verdadero clásico de los traumas de la infancia latina)
i love watching your reading vlogs, they always make my mornings better 🥰 also, i’m on the last book in the acotar series, im so ready to be done with it 🤣 i’m debating on starting another series by SJM but i can’t decide which one to start😅 love you bella!
My love mixup has a Japanese adaptation and the main character is just sooo cute and relatable and funny. You are gonna love it. You have to watch it pls
Question: have you heard about/seen the trailers for the One Piece live action yet? It looks like it’s going to be so good and Oda was heavily involved in it! Inaki (the actor who plays Luffy) seems so enthusiastic and friendly so he’s already the perfect Luffy! I’m really excited to watch it when it comes out!
Hey, Bella! I always love watching your vlogs and seeing how you keep us up to date with all that you're reading and watching! I genuinely enjoy the format of your videos and how they're edited - always such an amazing job! I have a question in regards to your Notion: how do you do the formula for progress on book series and animes/tv shows? I'm still VERY scared to start the anime for Attack on Titan, but I'm also super excited and anticipating the heartbreak and emotional whiplash it'll put me through!
Love your office chair 😍😍😍 can I ask from where you got it? I'm looking for one as well bc my current one hurts my back 😅 Also loved your vlog! They bring me so much joy😊
I always love your long vlogs! ❤ I'm currently re-reading Persuasion and also started reading The Crow Road by Iain Banks (because I've been going absolutely insane about Good Omens 2 for the past few weeks lol).
Hi! I just found you yesterday and I’ve been binging your videos. Everything about your channel is a breath of fresh air!! Idk if you’ve read the series but you should check out Blue Bloods. I was sooo obsessed w it in grade school. They’re a quick read and tbh I think it’s underrated and way better than twilight
@@throneofpages of course! I remember them being good, I haven’t read them since grade 6 or 7 BUT I am about to reread them here soon. If you check BB out I hope you like it!
