It looks like the kind of lead weight that ladies would sew into their hems in the 1920s to keep the garment from flying up in a breeze. It had the added benefit of making the garment hang and swing nicely.

Bill, we have some water soluble glue called Elmers Glue here in the US. If you mix a 50/50 mix of Elmers and water and dip the artifact/find in the mix and let dry- sometimes takes a few dips to coat. But the mix seeps and dries hard to protect the artifact/find. If you ever want to clean off the glue you can just rinse in water. You can experiment with it.

A possible coin preservation solution : Carry a half filled wide mouthed water canteen with you in the field clipped to your belt. Put the coins in the canteen so they do not dry out. The sloshing water will help clean the mud off. When you get home, using tweezers dip the still damp coin in WATER based polyurethane or polycrylic. Don't let the coin dry out before dipping in poly. Poly comes in both oil and water base. Make sure to use water based. This should encapsulate the coin in plastic and preserve even the corrosion. Poly comes in matte or flat finish as well as gloss finish. Might be fun to experiment with each type finish. Your philanthropic water well projects are appreciated. Thanks for you videos.

At some point, our modern garbage will be an artifact of the past and searched for. After exhausting an area or find a completely relic free area in the middle of nowhere people should gather worthwhile metal/glass items or maybe just nice pennies or new coins, buttons or ykk zippers or something we use all the time bury it a bit for metal detectorists a century from now to find. Although it would probably be mostly decayed powder within 40 years the way things are made now. Leave a message in coins as they dig it can be a clue to another spot. Like stapling a couple dollar bills on the inside of a sheetrock wall. One day someone will find it and more than likely want to or will tear the wall down in hopes of stacks of cash.

Did a screen capture and blew up the pictures and I am convinced that the little silver thing you found is a coin. I can see a faint cross in a circle of very blocky letters on the shiny side. It reminds me of Crusader coins of the 12th century. Definitely worth a careful and complete cleaning and examination under magnification. It looks like it has been hit with a hammer to erase the images, which itf it is Templar would make sense after the Order was Excommunicated, and having Templar coins might mark you as a sympathizer.

"Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life." - Humphrey Bogart from Casablanca. I need to read up on what you are supposed to do to clean an old coin since you mentioned not rubbing them so the image doesn't come off the surface. Or is that just a problem for how they made Romans?
@ChillBill1
@ChillBill1 5 лет назад
Old copper and very old brozne will rust. This rust destroys the surface detail by turning it into a copper compound powder. It happens in most copper coins in most soils. I need a way of turning it back into metal. I think a furnace is the way to go.
