Cobblers field, which was grass for 2 1/2 years and then planted with peas this spring. The crop yielded 8.5t/ha and was hand picked for the garden pea market in early July. The covercrop is made up of turnips, red clover, white clover, vetch, mustard, buckwheat, phacelia, maize, sorghum, red and white millet, radish, linseed and sunflowers. The crop has grown brilliantly through the summer and was sampled it on the 6th September to yield and test the nutrient status. The crop had a fresh weight of 25t/ha and a dry matter of 6.4t/ha. The exciting stuff is the nutrient content of the cover crop, with a nitrogen content of 269kg/ha, phosphorus of 43kg/ha and potash of 260kg/ha. At today’s market prices this has a financial return of Nitrogen £273/ha, Phosphorus £45/ha and Potash of £165/ha. In addition there was substantial levels of Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, B and Mo.

Hell yeah, that is one delightful field. Carbon capture, bird-friendly (our farmland birds increasingly need a place to hide on-farm) and a haven for pollinators. As a non-farmer, the figures you're throwing at us, such as dry matter values, nitrogen and whatever else, are something that needs explaining to me for sure. Boy, farming truly does deliver to the general public so many different things.

Will there be a video of the sowing of the new crop?

Great cover crop jake, would like to see the drilling of that!! If it doesn't work it could be a load of old cobblers!!!!

Cover crop Nirvana Jake, difficult to achieve especially this year as its been so dry but it shows what can be achieved.

Amazing how quickly that cover has grown and that a drill will go straight into it.

Wow that’s absolutely amazing , it’s totally wild in growth height . Fascinated to see how it goes . Lead from the front , don’t be a sheep 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🚜👍🏻

You don’t need anything but a small amount of biological stimulation at green up next year! You have more than 4 different family groups which has been proven to produce more than 300# of N applied! High population of wheat in fall to capture excess availability early, growth stimulator or mow in spring to control height and help prevent lodging and applied N at boot stage should give you one heck of a return!!! Awesome looking cover crop!!! Keep farming the way Elohim designed it to work!!! Shalom!..

As usual really interesting Jake. It would be great if you could update on this field next year to see how it yields.

No issue to it, I drilled into as heavy with the 750a… you have to be very careful with any clips or keys as the cover will open them… all replaced with bolts… cross slot will laugh at it

I understand how the crop could be a substitute for buying nitrogen, because it's fixed from the air. But I don't understand how it could provide new phosphorus or potassium - if those elements are in the crop then surely they must have come from the soil?

A fantastic cover crop. Will you spray Glyphosate before drilling or will you drill straight into it standing ? Would there be a benefit in crimping it before drilling ? Looking forward to the next video.

Super impressive cover crop! Will you spray off the cover crop or crimp and will you add a humic acid source? Great video.

Impressive 5ft 11” sunflowers, sir! Cover crop certainly doesn’t appear deficient after a dose of glyphosate. (I understand the science…). But for those that don’t, do you have ongoing stats from your local water board? Has this 8 hectares seen the last of glyphosate as a means to move forward in future cover crop /cash crop/main rotation crop production?

Hi Jake, cracking cover crop there, how do you deal with that amount of material for seed depth placement? I run a weaving gd and struggle for consistency not due to the drill but the trash thickness.

Will carbon trading be a better break crop than osr, beans etc? Interesting times ahead. 👍
@No1FarmerJake
@No1FarmerJake 3 года назад
I have been thinking that today. If that’s 6t/ha of carbon, could be more plus any biodiversity payments, what we would save on the following wheat crop could make an interesting spreadsheet!

Purely from a wildlife angle, it does seem a huge shame that while it buzzing with insects and especially Bees, you going to run a drill through it killing unknown numbers of them in the process. This is not a criticism because I have followed all that you show via youtube and support everything that your doing, however I see the down side also, and its a pretty big downside as most farmland is deviod of such vibrant insect habitat. Its like inviting them to a party and once they are there dropping a bomb on them. I'm no eco warrior but I do know our insects, especially the pollinators, are in real trouble.

It’s a valid point but in the field to the north we have the same mix that is part of out winter bird feeding plans which won’t be touched until next spring so there is room for migration-to a point.
