Long Awaited Maiden! Just a heads up. DO NOT LISTEN TO THE MANUAL FOR ELEVATOR NEUTRAL LOCATION! IT'S WRONG! Use your eyes. We ended up with about 1/2" down on the leading edge of the elevator from the manual location for neutral. Thanks for watching!
@janmb
@janmb 3 года назад
Probably at least partially caused by CG as well. Both the takeoff, the elevator neutral pos, the energy retention, all tells the tale of a significantly nose heavy setup. Awesome maiden anyway - well done. A what a gorgeous model it is 😁
@Lozzie74
@Lozzie74 2 года назад
@@janmb I agree. The CG looked way too far forward.
@rodgerhecht3623

On the full scale when flaps are down there is a lot of up elevator mixed in. I flew a yellow air craft F-18 back in the glow days ....when i put the flaps down the plane nose dived and i didn't have any offset for flaps and the plane only had tailerons i was turning base and she went in. The flaps blanked the elevator.
@garrykennedy5484
@garrykennedy5484 2 года назад
@@rodgerhecht3623 But he needed a lot of up elevator in normal flight. It shouldn't have taken that long to rotate with a full flying stab. Nose heavy is better than tail heavy on a maiden though, so. Good deal. Ruff runway sucks also. Overall I call it a success. Fast landing due to nose heavy also, but it did great considering. I would be proud of that flight.
@fern6978
@fern6978 2 года назад
Yikes! I think every F-18 I've flown ended up needing a far more aft cg and more neutral elevator to fly optimally. IDK why they're always manual SOOO nose heavy like that. Glad you got lift at least... That was close to disaster.

@@thelightersideofrc I think that take off roll was quite to scale. BTW, what would the total $ loss be in the event of a (gulp) crash? When you get up into five figures, it might be a good time to develop a scaled down ballistic parachute recovery system. Think about that, everything else is done to these scale models so why not some insurance?

I did a maiden flight on a a new helicopter last weekend and it was my first flybarless helicopter i ever built, and it was very stressful thinking if I've done everything right, is the flybarless system setup correctly, etc. So i can appreciate the take off and landing.

Where was the throttle at most of the flight, it seemed pretty quick. I was thinking the landing was on the hot side as well, but I do the same on my maidens. Kind of like the big boys say, 5 knots for the wife, 5 knots for the kids and 5 knots... just because. I'd like to see more of this one please. Especially how the elevator is adjusted, that's for sure not right.

On the 1/8 F18E, we had to shim the retract down to get a more positive AOA to avoid the jump into the air, this is on grass too. Inboard rudders help as well on takeoff.

I do not have any first hand experience but I have heard that some F-18 models trim both rudders inboard to assist with takeoff rotation. Don't know if this is a factor. Great job though. That was a Pucker Factor of 10 on takeoff!
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 3 года назад
Haha! No kidding Randy! Glad it got off. KT engines started slow so if you watch the first part of the takeoff run it was slow. Then the zero point for the Elevator in manual is wrong so by the end of the flight we had added 90 points of up elev trim. We do have the rudders coming inboard on full flaps. Not take off flaps though.

For some reason RC F18's are always tough to maiden. Probably because they are so short coupled and have so much flap authority. And the forward CG just compounds the issue. When I heard 'that was full up elevator' I was thinking...yup that's a tough situation right there. At any rate that test pilot needs a medal. Getting that elevator trim dialed in with the different flap settings is the do or die moment on an F18. I would probably consider leaving full flap trim for the second flight. Great to see it worked out.
@thelightersideofrc

@@thelightersideofrc I wonder how the maiden went with the full scale FA18 back in the day? Crap….I’m declaring an emergency….having to dial in an excessive amount of elevator trim here…can barely hold it…

Thought that paint looked familiar, I was AIMD on the Kitty for her last few years. The Maces were/are flying the F/A-18E while I was aboard. Still like the look of the Diamondbacks better though.

Awesome plane, and obviously the owner can put whatever squadron he wants on it - it's his money. But as a former pilot in VFA-27 myself, it pains me to see my squadron on an F model!!! Still an amazing model and tense maiden - nice job!!!

Sorry to hear about your experience with the camera. Still, nice to see it flying. Wish I could afford one. Like a phantom with the NAVY Squadron Skull and crossbones on the tail. Remember, I was a Air crash crew member During Vietnam, I was just a kid back then.

Did you land with flaps and if so how much elev trim up or down did you need thanks I’m trying to get my large edf hornet dialed in with full span flaps it likes to balloon up even at half flaps with manual recommended nose up stab trim at half flaps so I’ll try with no stab trim and go from there ….thanks beautiful rhino
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 2 года назад
For the maiden no flaps. The trim condition was separate on each setting so no time to re trim. The flaps require a significant amount of up elevator for compensation. just a rough number take off flaps about 10mm on leading edge of flaps. Full flaps about 20mm of compensation.

It’s unfortunate how much the airplane leans while taxing. I guess the suspension is pretty soft to give you that scale looking trailing link suspension. The F16 seems to do the same thing. Great build!!!
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc Год назад
Yea it has since been changed a bit. That's one of the great things with the Skymaster Gear. You can modify air pressure but you can also modify oil weight. So if the air pressure is kept the same which controls the sag and you up the oil weight it doesn't react as fast and this helped the lean alot.

OMG! Thank You so much for sharing this video! That was so much fun to watch! Nice landing too! Almost as rough as landing on the flight deck, yes?! I’m a retired AD from VFA - 25 (Fist of The Fleet) I’m 2009. Curious, how did your AC cost you?

Thanks for watching! Yea it's not far off from a carrier landing for sure. Fortunatley the gear on this plane is outstanding! It's basically a functional copy of the full scale. To put together a large twin like this it usually comes in around 25K USD.

That landing looked fast! most of the time i see videos of planes like these they seem to be able to slow them down a lot for landing but not this one. is this just how the pilot flys it or does it need to keep all this speed?
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 3 года назад
Due to the incorrect neutral position in the manual we didn't use any flaps for the Landing. They can slow down a TON!

Very nice but tense maiden. I probably would have aborted take off but thankfully things turned out great. One can tell that you know what you're doing. Good stuff!! ✈️
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 3 года назад
Thanks! Yea it's a tough choice. if the take off was aborted it wouldn't have stopped in time (obviously depending on when you aborted) and possibly run into the dirt which would have done major damage. Will discuss in the follow up video.
@krotchlickmeugh627
@krotchlickmeugh627 2 года назад
After youre going fast enough to think the takeoff isnt going to be in time. Its always too late. You can arm chair it all you want but i have owned lots of f18s. They all do the same thing. There are ways to mitigate it. But you'll never know how it works until you try it. There was no aborting that take off. It was going up or it wasnt. Thats your only option and unfortunately youre not going to be making it. Itll be made for you.

Wanting a new transmitter but I'm stuck between the ix12 and nx10 spektrums which would you get? Also seen alot of reviews on radiomaster tx16s
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 3 года назад
Of all of those 3 i've only ever held the ix12. So i'm not going to be the best source between those 3. I would suggest going with more channels if possible if your getting into more complicated aircraft in the future. The F15 that we are currently building, the owner has an 18 Ch radio and we have run out of channels.

Man I’d kill to have a big jet like this! Great job considering the circumstances. My fingers would’ve been sweating and shaking haha. Does sky master determine the paint schemes for these planes or was it the pilot who does? I only ask because the Royal Maces never flew D model hornet?
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 3 года назад
Thanks! Yea they can be a bit nerve racking when they add some excitement like this! Skymaster will make schemes but ultimatley you can order any scheme on any model. This isn't the Hornet. It's the C/D model, Round intakes. Hornet square intakes😉
