HUGE F16 - Flying!

A model that has been around for over a decade, but has had only very few flights on it. Previously owned by Victor Calvo, its new owner MalagaJets asked me to setup and test fly this beast!
At just under 4m length and I am told around 50-60kg in weight this is a big one!

Well Chuck Yeager said “If you can walk away from a landing, it’s a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it’s an outstanding landing.” In that case walking away you can’t do it but the second one it looks like you’ll definitely be able to use it again...for the nose gear well at least it was already down, better than having it stuck retracted ! 😉😂 Nice vid thx for sharing just music not as loud maybe for next time.😃

Great video! I can imagine the sensitivity of the controls is extreme, and this guys skills are amazing. When I was a kid, I got a model airplane, a P 51 I believe it was, that was controlled by a hand held device with two strings connected to the plane for elevation and descent. It had a little gas engine, and on my first flight I didn't even make one complete circle before I nose dived it into the ground at full speed. That was the end of my model airplane carreer.

Indeed, we came to the same conclusion. Due to its massive weight (and of course size) the weight to scale ratio must be a lot closer than our usual over-light models are, and the results were clear to see

@user-td1zo3tv9p 5 лет назад
@@MartinPickering-PickeringRC, if I had to guess (and not being able to physically examine up close) I've seen similar phenomena on several full-sized aircraft I worked on as an FAA aircraft mechanic, the air pressure forcing the strut aft is too much to overcome the lock/unlock mechanism of your strut. If the system is driven via a HD servo, you might be able to use an actuating armature that would give you more mechanical leverage. If the gear is operated via pneumatic/hydraulic actuators, you might be able to increase the pressure supplied to the up/down lock mechanism. If you are using a lock/unlock mechanism that mimics a full-sized aircraft strut, you might be able to increase the lever arm which controls the over-center locking arm. Without seeing which system you are using, I'm unable to give you more than a S.W.A.G. at the moment. If you could send me a couple of photographs in a PM, I might be able to give you a better analysis. Either way. Good Luck with that gorgeous aircraft!

I hate that people use gyros on these big planes. They are more trouble than they are worth. One more point of failure. That plane don't need flaps to supplement the ailerons and delta tail control. It's too easy to roll the air frame to begin with. Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you should. Glad the nose wheel stuck down though. It's also a tad nose heavy which is good for first flights of course. Not so much so as to be any problem either. I would work out the handling bugs first, then focus on CG. What a tremendously beautiful aircraft!! I loved my visit to this video and hope you get her dialed in very soon. As heavy as it is, you can use that to your advantage. Heavy wing loading means more stability in high winds. That goes with ALL aircraft.
@iforce2d
@iforce2d 4 года назад
I was told off recently for using aileron input in flap movement - adverse yaw etc etc. Maybe try keeping the flaps fixed when landing, might solve that wobble. From what you're saying about roll sensitivity it sounds like they don't need to be moving at all during normal flight either.

What a beautiful model. It looks and flies really well! The only things I may nitpick on (and I've worked on the real thing for 10 years) if you want to strive for ultimate realism: -The outer portion of the wing trailing edges are fixed in real life (i.e no ailerons - just flaperons). -The flaperons do not assist in pitch control. -The flaperon flaps mode is triggered by landing-gear down operation. -The leading edge flaps (LEF) are also triggered by LDG-down and Angle of Attack (i get that putting AoA sensors on an RC jet is crazy). Of course, I understand that being an RC jet, it is probably unlikely to build the thing unstable (in terms of center of lift vs center of gravity) like the real deal, which probably accounts for the "semi-realistic" flight controls. However, it is technically possible to achieve. The F-16 Flight Control System is from the late 60's, and what used to take quadruple redundancy computers and lots of space in terms of circuitry can probably fit and run on an arduino uno today. Yeah yeah "You try to do better", I get it :) It's not ment to bash the product, just shed light on possible improvements :) One of my all-time favorite RC models is the Rusjet yak-130. Check it out if you haven't already!
