Why not just print your door parts without pins and a clearance hole instead? You could stick a thin metal rod through it. I think metal would be so much more stable and durable :)

As a phasmid keeper for many years I suggest you to add more brambles with contacts to the ceiling and around the glasses, they will find their food way easier and you don't risk death by starving.

I know the roaches were a mistake in retrospect, but I could see this habitat housing some species in the bottom. Just gotta hope they don't burrow in the foam lmao. Anyways, great vid. I have been following the channel since the original dark den and it has been exciting to see your collection grow and change through the years. It feels like The Ultimate Dark Den is approaching, with how you're getting everything polished off and shelves filled with (dusty) glass enclosures. I wonder what will be next?

My first truly positive experience with an insect was with a schoolmate's Giant Jungle Nymph in grade 8. I think it was perhaps a different species, but these guys bring back some great memories! This kid brought his pet into science class and I got to hold this truly magnificent "bug". I was totally captivated, and the experience started a deep fascination of invertebrates in me. Thanks for sharing these beauties!

@@dylans--world999 Yes! I thought so, at least! 😊 I certainly didn't know anyone else with exotic pets at the time in my very, very small town. Lol It was great of him to let me hold his Jungle Nymph- not many wanted to, but I sure did! Worked out well in that way, too, since he didn't want her getting too stressed by being passed around a ton. I'm really curious now if he still keeps inverts... Hope so!

Hi just suggestion to solve your braking pins, to prevent them from breaking ever you can get thin metal rod, preferably stainless steel, Drill hole trough the pin , diameter of the steel rod/wire And then use epoxy to glue the steel rod inside of the fragile plastic pin This way it will be reinforced to the point that it shouldn’t ever brake again
@davidrafael1769
@davidrafael1769 2 года назад
yeah this is what i do and it works great so far
@connorfrazee8272
@connorfrazee8272 2 года назад
I was getting ready to type the same exact recommendation until I found this comment. Maybe replace the pin entirely with metal? This would remove a step if you simply printed the part with a hole instead of a pin and epoxy glued a metal pin in. Little bonus it would reduce friction at the hinge as well giving a longer life.
@danielballard3364
@danielballard3364 2 года назад
@@connorfrazee8272 Exactly what i was going to recommend.. don't print the Pin at all but instead a hole for a metal pin to fit in, then also the handle can still be printed like originally and will be more sturdy for frequent openings as well
@TheDarkDen
@TheDarkDen 2 года назад
I did that for lindas enclosure. It is stronger but still not sturdy enough. The plastic section under the pin is 1.5mm thin and it doesn't provide the strength, whole metal rod together with the plastic around it breaks from the rest of the part.
@seanrallis6714
@seanrallis6714 2 года назад
@@TheDarkDen eliminate the plastic pin entirely. Instead, print the piece with a hole where the pin used to be. Then, simply glue a steel pin of the same diameter as the plastic pin into the hole.

with the markings on stick insect eggs, they do serve another purpose, they are designed to mimic seeds so that when the female lays the eggs they drop to the ground and are carried away by ants thinking that they are seeds, from there the eggs will sit in the ant colony and wait for a certain amount of time depending on the species before hatching and climbing out into the world. I've kept 6 different types of phasmids and the eggs are all different but have the same life cycle before hatching.

For your printing problem. Maybe you could print a hole and use a metal pin instead. You could clue that metal into the hole. That shoud be stronger and also you could print it the other direction as before. Sure metal pin would be a seperate part. Maybe the round 3mm metal pins for shelfs could be a thing?
@kyleculp7520
@kyleculp7520 2 года назад
For your pins, you could CAD holes in the center of the pin all the way thru and add wire nails in the holes. They come in a bunch of lengths so you wouldn't have to cut anything. Just press them in and bam solves the flimsy pins

You can make the handle for the door stronger by moving it to the bottom instead of at the top and adding a ridge on the middle to brace it better. Sort of like an upside down T. Or making them thicker, maybe as thick as the trim you print, might make it strong enough.
@Albrekin
@Albrekin 2 года назад
What you could do for the pins is remove the hinge pin from the 3D printing design, and instead make a hole in there. Then get some small metal dowels that would fit in the hole tightly and use the metal dowel to support the weight and wouldnt break as easy. it would be more of a assembly process and finding someone who sells the metal dowels at the right size, but would fix both of the breaking issues

I have a suggestion for your pin problem. What If you printed the pin separately. And then print the parts that go on the glass separately. They would both have holes for the pin, and the pin would provide stability as well as move freely and no longer pose an issue of breaking. It would also allow you to print the lift handle the original way providing the strength. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I know it will be expensive since you use more than one camera but I can’t wait for the day you go 4K Edit: Oh and HDR so we get to see the beautiful colours that you sometimes talk about that you see in person but not on the camera. I remember recently you was talking about where one of the Ts had a colour between its booty that looked orange iirc but we couldn’t see it like you can irl. I am not camera professional but i wondered if an HDR camera also being uploaded to RU-vid in HDR would show it? One thing that would be awesome is to calibrate your TV via matching the colours of all your beautifully coloured Ts and other animals in the Dark Den to the colour settings of your TV.

Depending on what type of plastic your printer uses, thin, brush-on plastic cement like "plastic magic" or "tamiya ultra-thin" might help you with older pins. Just coat the piece in a thin layer of the glue [like you are painting a base coat] and let it dry. it should partially melt then re-crystalize the plastic, making it 1 piece instead of a laminate. If you do, do it outside and let it dry outside. Plastic cement is acetone based and causes mild fumes. I don't want to be the cause of another great dying. You can even clean the residue with soapy water to be safe.
