You absolutely don’t know that and it’s laughable you insinuate that. Any person alive could’ve been affected by Ian’s content. Being called the f-word back then you could attribute that to them hearing it in one of his videos and then saying it to someone else. At any rate, in the space that Ian is in of course he needs to distance himself from his past self because he needs sponsors and the like for what he is producing right now. Do I think that’s the only reason for it? No. I think he’s trying to get rid of the fans he’s stated multiple times not enjoying interacting with while also making amends with anyone he may have turned away. As a black male I never thought HE was racist, but he normalized hate speech within his community whether it was intentional or not. I respect Charlie and respect his opinion on the matter, but unfortunately he lives in a reality that’s different from most minorities. He will never fully understand how these slurs impact people, and I don’t mean that in a hateful way. Being black I knew at an early age that my life wouldn’t be the same as most white peoples’ lives; thats just the current state we live in as a civilization (especially as an American). EDIT: Someone in the comments pointed out that Ian’s supporters would often say “its just words” in response to people criticizing his use of slurs and I distinctly remember that phrase appearing all the time in Ian’s comments section. The harsh truth is sometime its not just words, they can come from a rooted history of malice and oppression. These words represent the stereotypes that still continue in some ways to this day. They can represent generations of literal slavery, torture, and death not even exaggerating here. I’m not saying all nasty words should be banned or something, but people to need recognize these words come from somewhere. It was funny for Ian to spew them at the time because we knew they were taboo. So maybe we should ask ourselves WHY they became controversial phrases in the first place.

When I came out as bi in 9th grade a group of edgy kids who were huge Idubbz fans thought it would be funny to create a group chat dedicated to making fun of me. They dedicated a whole week to creating a fake persona of a trans girl who reached out to me on Snapchat looking for advice on how to come out properly. I didn’t know it was fake so I tried to give my best advice and be as kind and respectful as I could, even when they made the fake trans person say really weird edgy stuff. They ended up screen-shotting the conversation and sharing with my toxic friend group at the time, and they all called me slurs for the rest of the month and would tell me to stop being “triggered” when I would yell at them to stop. I’m glad Idubbz has apologized for his actions, because his channel absolutely contributed to the culture of harassment back then, and it’s good to see he’s turned it around

@orngpeelr9017 Год назад
@Isaac Belliveau Intention and impact are 2 distinct things. Ian may have never *intended* for his content to influence young children to be racist thinking they were being edgy and funny, or promote a toxic environment of bigoted and generally mean-spirited people that harass strangers online but that’s what his fan base is/did. That’s partially what he feels responsible and guilty for. Of course, he didn’t command any of these people to do any of these things, but he still majorly benefited from it; that’s why he even has the popularity/relevance/money he has today. Sure, parents have a responsibility, but that’s another conversation. Plus, we’re not strictly talking about 10 year olds here, also high schoolers and young adults that have more agency and self responsibility. Whatever the case, Ian knows he owes a lot of his fame and wealth to the problematic content that he created, that’s why he feels shame and guilt, and that’s largely what Charlie fails to understand.

Normally just lurk because I agree with the overwhelming majority of your takes on situations, but this one is a pretty big miss for you. I disagree with this too and it's not an age thing. In my early 30s myself so I'm probably one of your older viewers. So I was also in my 20s during idubbbz's peak popularity and could recognize what wasn't okay to say. But I also recognize that damage they caused to teenagers and people much more impressionable. As you've seen there's a lot of people coming forward with stories of harassment fueled by racism and hate by people who were watching his content back in the day. This weird stance you're taking that idubbbz just shouldn't really feel bad about it is honestly bizarre and a bit disappointing coming from you. Being a voice and role model for that sort of behavior contributes to the normalization of it in a big way. FYI peoples reactions are exactly what give the words power its how the world perceives them and right now they have an absurd amount of power to affect someone even when they aren't said directly to them. The comments here don't allow for a lot of nuance or acknowledging that a single youtuber shouldn't be blamed for the entirety of a generation's actions. Also, after watching most of idubbbz old videos, most of the racism was said ironically, done to show how silly the racist stereotypes are dumb. If anything, idubbbz is more judgemental now than he was before. He just hates on people in different groups. There are tons of videos from more recent times where he judges others for their politics, being disabled, and being emotional. He hasn't matured or become a better person. I saw a lot of extensive homophobia, racism, and more towards minorities that were justified by "that one funny video" they saw from that general group of youtubers. Is that the youtuber's fault? No, not at all. I watched their content too and would never dream of acting that way, no matter my age. Did it happen though? 100%. @SciFyerGaming well obviously, everyone knows that--they're saying that he greatly influenced kids and teenagers becoming and acting more casually racist in the years he was actively creating content, whether that be online or in the real world. for comparison, andrew tate obviously didn't invent sexism and toxic masculinity, but to say he hasn't greatly influenced a subsection of (primarily) teenage boys and younger men due to his content would be a lie.
@Liam-zo4jm
@Liam-zo4jm Год назад
he didn't create a culture of hate. racism and hatred existed well before 2016. it isn't even like he was the one who spread it on the internet, people have been racist on video games/the internet since it was first discovered.
@Spidergworllover
@Spidergworllover Год назад
He created a community of racism. Don't dumb it down to simply "hate" as if that's all it is. His community/fans follow behind what they think he believes. Making racist jokes gives the vibes that you are a fellow racist, which attracts racists to follow you and join your community

This is just a weird take. Of course he wasn’t the only person contributing, but he was one of the more popular ones. I think because you wouldn’t have been a target you maybe underestimate the impact it had. Also, this seems like something he did for his own peace of mind, not because there was a huge outcry for it. I rarely see people mention idubbbz at this point, this apology wasn’t expected. If the guy feels bad for who he used to be I think it’s a good thing that he addresses it and takes accountability. Will probably make him feel better.
@willisstillhere8846
@willisstillhere8846 Год назад
I mean if he did it for his own peace of mind and for no one else then that's completely fine why would he post it on a public forum then? He didnt make it private either so it either seems disingenuous to some, or just shows how much some people are "chronically online" that they make everything they're going through public. Also, just as there are people who didn't go through it and thus their opinions might be not as much of value, there are people that went through it and werent affected as much. Does that invalidate them too? Why does it? Do you or any other person feel like ypu have more leverage to speak over others? Just some random questions it's not really targeted
@Squ_iddy
@Squ_iddy Год назад
@@willisstillhere8846 There are some things in life that are just objectively wrong for societal standards. Example, I'm sure a majority of people would agree bullying is wrong because they've experienced it and it has negatively impacted their lives. And maybe there's a minority of people who said it didn't affect their lives, cool their feelings are valid. But why would I listen to the people who aren't affected on the subject of if bullying is bad in comparison to those who have been affected? Is bullying suddenly justified and not bad because some people weren't hurt by it? No, because society deems bullying as wrong already, so those who have experienced it and weren't hurt by it are the outliers, and that's a good thing if they're truly fine after that, but that's not the standard.
