With another day ahead of me in southern Iran, I set out to have a traditional local breakfast before crossing a major item off my bucket list: finally seeing the ruins at Persepolis! Come with me and let’s explore more of southern Iran!
My day began at six in the morning with my friend Mosen, who would be taking me to eat ash, a super popular breakfast food, at the most popular place to have it! It’s a thick stew-like dish made from a mix of lamb, beans, and vegetables.

🌎 MY TRAVEL BLOG: davidsbeenhere...
Our guide Ali and I met with the owner and then headed inside the bakery, where they were baking some massive pieces of bread! We took a big piece and then headed into the restaurant’s kitchen, where I saw them making the ash, wheat haleem, halwa, and a lamb-rice-walnut dish called etli pilaf.
They add crispy onions on top of the ash. They also put cinnamon and sugar on the Haleem! They prepared both dishes in a huge vat!
Back at our table, we tried the ash with the fresh sangak bread. I could taste the lamb and beans in it. It was still very hot, but it was phenomenal! The herbs also brought out all the flavors of the lamb and beans. It was so good!
The Haleem was also smooth and tasty. The crushed walnuts on top added a crunchy element and it was very minty. I loved eating it with the bread. It was my favorite Haleem I’d had so far! Then, we jumped on the wheat Haleem, which contained cinnamon.
We added sugar into it to make it sweeter! It was very nice-savory and sweet at the same time! It’s a tasty and filling way to start your day! We finished with the halwa, which reminded me of an Italian dessert called panna cotta. The saffron made it really unique, and it was also really sweet, too. I loved it!
The owner here is so kind. He is 80 years old and has been serving food at this restaurant for 56 years. He’s a sweetheart, so be sure to come and support hi when you go to Shiraz!
Next, we drove roughly 67 kilometers to Persepolis, an ancient site I’ve been wanting to visit my entire life!
Persepolis dates back to 520 BC. It’s thought that Cyrus the Great (the founder of the Achaemenid Empire) chose the site for the city, but Darius I (the third king of the Achaemenid Empire) built the terrace and palaces.
The city was famously plundered and destroyed by Alexander the Great and his forces in 330 BC. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
Upon entering, we saw a massive wall made of huge blocks, and two staircases opposite one another, with 118 steps each. Up the staircases is the Gate of All Nations, built in 480 BC. There are three inscriptions in three languages, including Babylonian and Old Persian.
At the gate are four 14-meter-high pillars. One has already fallen. On either side of the gates are mythological figured called lamassu, which have the head and wisdom of a man, the wings of an eagle, and the body of a bull or lion. They’re so detailed!
Next, we saw the Apadana Palace. On the staircase are pyramid-like structures symbolizing the four elements of life (water, fire, earth, and wind), and cuneiform inscriptions. There are also bas reliefs of Persian nobles wearing beards.
Further on are the ruins of the Apadana’s columns. There used to be 36, but only a few remain. We also saw the Tachara, which was the private palace of Darius I. There are tons of stone doorways still standing! Next was the Hall of the Hundred Columns, built by Xerxes I. It’s a jungle of destroyed pillars!
The Tomb of Artaxerxes II is a beautiful rock-carved building with lots of carvings. There’s also a stone tomb inside. And after a 30-minute drive, we arrived at the Tomb of Cyrus the Great. It’s huge and sits on seven levels of stone platforms!
Where have you been?

David: You really outdid yourself on this one. I will forgo breakfast in this one. The history is so much more interesting and fascinating. Who knew that there was so much meaning behind a simple hat and beard? As for Persepolis, how grand is this place eh!!! Would it be right to call it the ruins of Persepolis? One can barely see the top. Just remember that all of these structures and carvings were done by hand. No modern equipment in ancient times. This was TRULY amazing. That tomb is tremendous. All of this withstood the test of time and all through conflicts in the region. To see that all of this is still standing today despite all of that is extraordinary. Just magnificent. As for the breakfast, my stomach was full watching you both eat. Even half way through one bowl, I was gasping for air 🤣🤣🤣. I literally had to take a breath. WOW! Brandon was right when he said that we would enjoy Iran. For all the people who are into history and culture, this is an interesting one. I know that a lot of people watch for the food and criticize a lot, but put that aside sometimes. I read a comment here of someone saying that he himself hates beef and that David is always talking about beef, which is not true so he is unsubscribing.🤔 So David great content in this one. Happy to see you back from Iraq and I am glad that the Iran series is back on. Blessings as usual 🙏🇹🇹🇨🇦

It's actually fairly simple for most people. They only have a longer process for U.S./UK/Canadians. I looked it up and good news: Singaporians don't even need a visa to come here! You can just get on a plane and they'll automatically give you a visa on arrival :) Link to Iran's ministry of foreign affairs page on Singaporeans: www.mfa.gov.sg/countries-regions/i/iran-islamic-republic-of/travel-page Hope you can visit soon!
