Bjarne, When our Son watches your videos with us, he always marvels at the size of trees you fall at some of the places you work. He said what we do is like falling toothpicks compared to that and while that's true to a certain extent its not always the case. He says you make it look so easy....Well after explaining that the knowledge and experience you have is what sometimes makes it look easy, but in all actuality its anything but easy because when one is internally rotted like a lot of those big red and yellow cedars are that get that old, they also become very dangerous sometimes. Well this block were working in now and will finish up this spring ( he says with fingers crossed) there are some really big old growth Ponderosa and Spruce at the northwest edge of this block and we hiked into them yesterday to get good survey of what was to come in a couple weeks and there are a couple 3-4 big ( for here anyways) dying snags in there that are close to the biggest we have dropped here so its going to provide me the absolute perfect opportunity to show our Son and the other 2 young guys on our crew just exactly how what we have spent YEARS learning....is anything but easy. Take Care Buddy. R.C.Hill
@BjarneButler

Hi Randy. I may make it look easy sometimes but it took years of practice and mistakes to get there. Those full length snags can be quite dangerous with those rotten tops. It’s nice to hear you guys are keeping busy 🤙

Hellova job ol friend…I’m from Ky and wonder how hard an oak would be to face up and fall in that spot…..that ol cedar seems to cut easy..our big whit oaks,hickory, and one of the hardest I’ve cut..pecan keep you honest on yer filing game and you better have cut a few and know what depth to set rakers or yer in for a long hard day…too much chatter will wear your hands out…too little burn bars n chains up and never get any down…I had rich build my 394 12yrs or so ago and it’s a monster with serious power…eat my new 395 and rival the big 880 I just bought last yr…beautiful country and I hope to visit bc before I go..
@BjarneButler
@BjarneButler Год назад
Ya cedars are very soft trees. They cut quite easily, the harder the wood the better your filing must be. Especially when cutting with a long bar. It’s a lot easier with a ground chain but when hand filing it takes some experience to be proficient at keeping that saw cuttin straight. I always make sure to touch up the chain throughout the day

On a big tree that's dead and shatters when it hits the ground - is that just all garbage making room for replanting? Or do they try to salvage any of the cedar?
@ShiftyTribes
@ShiftyTribes Год назад
Alot of old red cedars have a decent amount of butt rot, this trees still alive, the fungus that usually does this in them would rarely actually kill the tree. usually only really shows up in the bottom 10m~ of the log, so most of the wood above is still worth good coin. As for the butt section, this one's worthless, but if there are pieces that are good wood and long enough to mill (12ft of solid wood is the minimum most mills want) they will still pick them. Essentially just becomes a smaller log, value is measured in board feet, so if it's good wood and it's millable it doesn't matter. Red cedar is worth it's Weight in gold

Seems as if those trees should have been cut 50-100 years ago. Why they making you cut down that dangerous rotten wood, just to recycle? For fire hazard reasons? Nice work and stay safe. Compared to those, the ones I cut are toothpicks! Midwest/Great Lakes trees, even big ones tiny and we think we need a 395 :)

@@BjarneButler ok thanks Bjarne . So all the old veteran cedars in that cut block were left and then taken down after. Kind of weird . I guess they must have been in a grey area concerning the size , because there is new cutting regs concerning the big old ones. Looked like a lot of fence rail material . Or maybe they wanted the fir etc to be laid out to act as a cushion for the big old vets .the value of cedar is pretty up there . Is your 592 as smooth running as the 572?
