HUGE Redwood REMOVAL

understanding Redwoods is also knowing that in the wrong environment, they don’t grow correctly. An urban redwood can often become a MONSTER problem tree much too quickly. This tree broke the water pipes and the client had a $2000. dollar water bill one month and didn’t know there was a leak. In the forest, a 66 year old tree might only be 16 inches in diameter (which is right).

Hi Guys , I’m from west Tennessee. I cut timber for 20 years and now I’m working for a tree service. And I just wanted to tell you that I feel blessed to have the knowledge I’ve gained and I’m always open for more. Your attitudes seem to be the same and I LOVE it. Blair, god only knows I could write a book here, you know. First, this was the most comprehensive, modern video I've EVER seen on removing a residential Redwood. Almost flawless with today's technology. I thank you so much!! THIS, as the 'lead climber', was what I became accustomed to, ABSOULUTLY LIVED FOR, 40 years ago, sans the buckets, new tech gear, working with just a single taut line hitch, a power saw, a climb line, and a safety line. Our 'tech' was a cabled safety line, if available. (you remember that.) At the time, a 'truckers hitch' was a staple. Rarely were we blessed with ample room for a drop zone. we had to 'table' small? lol? sections of wood with the largest saws we had. Our old chippers were high speed death traps that yanked the branches, if sharp, grabbed them so fast we had to become acrobats NOT to be whipped repeatedly on our body's. rolling small/large sections to the truck, it would literally take 4 men to lift them into the truck. you KNEW manhood, and what REAL work was about. ~MM

You must be very proud of your Son, he seems to be very good at trees and a very hard worker... every time I see a video with you and your son, it reminds me of my Father when I started working for him and he got me into climbing trees when I was just 17 years old... he never told me he was proud of me, but I could just see it in his face.

Yeah, the sawyer should unclip when topping for the very reason you said . The bar can get hung up in the holding wood if he saws too quickly or there’s heavy lean (or pulling). Very happy he got the saw clear but that was a close one.

After watching this channel for quite a while and learning how fast trees can grow in that area, I would've guessed 80 or 85. Before I started watching Blair I would have guessed 150 at least...LOL..!! I really liked the end where the top was cut off and slow mo was used with some very serene and sad strings & piano music...very nicely done..!!

My hat is off to you Blair. That was a difficult job -- well handled, and safe. Not many arborists could have done it.

Thanks for this amazing video. I guessed the tree was 100 years old - way out! But it’s sad to see such a wonderful tree being taken out. But the fact that they are so fast growing is a consolation.

I do wall climbing.. Paragliding, abseiling and some thing to do with high altitude.. But every time i watch your video on cutting tall trees it will give me a goosebumps. Chill in my spine.

The work you do is amazing.The one thing I admire is your patience with the job and your guys.My first tree experience was in the 90's at a major company for powerlines.Soon after I went to another major company in St.Louis.The man in charge of our crew was on edge and screaming.Soon after I learned why.He had a white powdery substance on a cd case inside the bucket truck.Needless to say,I got a job close to home as soon as I could.

Your work is not for those uncomfortable with heights. Wish I had that load of milled redwood. It would keep in stock and busy for the rest of my life---and then some. You and your crew do great work.

Awesome vijeo. Lol. Im from east coast where we get big hardwood but most of the time they are so spready they require a crane when that big. I would love to know how much you put on that job.

Arguably the height of that back cut is more the issue with the way the saw left the top, but that was a nice takedown. Speed lining those limbs was the perfect solution.

At the end it looks like you got paid in redwood boards! We had a small (25 feet?) redwood in our yard when I was 5 years old. Those splinters sure get sore! Glad y'all made it home safely. I groaned when that stem missed the chip pile.

one of the best videos I have watched. thank you. I have killed only a few dozen trees when I lived on 20 acres or BC west coast rain forest. I had lots of room and choice of where the trees landed usually. I know enough to be dangerous and even though I will never own another chainsaw I like learning from you.

I would love to know what ballpark the bid was in for this tree!.. the saw getting grabbed has happened to me before I don’t use lanyard, but have had saws ripped out of my hand . I find that it’s important especially in wood that snaps easy to insure that back cut is level with the bottom of the face cut you practically negate that possibility when you do

That is one hell of a stump removal. Going to be hard to keep the residual root system from resprouting. What was the diamter on the stump?

Mine was already dying & it was removed in november of last year. Termites were killing it.

I guessed 75 at first but then thought no this tree had prime squared growing conditions and changed to 65. That sure saved a lot of time and effort being able to bring it down as one big log!

Great video, especially the slo-mo of the top coming off! I must admit I cringed slightly to see the mill operators' shirt loose like that, but I guess in reality it was plenty far enough away from the blade. Pleased with my guess at the beginning of 60 - 80 years old.

What a pity that you missed. ... Why did you cut out the lower branches? They can stay attached when you was felling whole tree, or not?

This video is impressive. It's sad to see such a majestic tree being cut but when you have to do it, you have to do it. I am also very curious about the amount of sawn timber in this tree.

Very crucial point to unclip your saw if gets stuck it will rip you from the tree not good ,that’s why you guys need to know your stuff ,thanks for the video

We had two large branches of one of those old huge-spreading oak trees crack off last night or this morning and is currently blocking our driveway and covering the majority of the neighbor's yard. "Coastal oaks" I think you have called them? I would say a 22" diameter and a 26" diameter branch. Plenty big, probably 15,000-18,000 pounds of wood. Got a tree service on the way. Looks like nothing serious was damaged, maybe knocked a few bricks off the top of a wall separating the properties, plenty of those bricks were loose anyway. Tree news!

Was he doing that top without spikes?

Where was this? The neighborhood looked well canopied, which seems unusual in Silicon Valley. My guess is Los Altos Hills or Portola Valley?

For the climbers I highly recommend a breakaway saw strap and to clip the saw to a Transporter on your hip. Makes the saw more easily accessible and the long webbing hanging down less likely to get hung up. Less of a stump shot on the top would help make the top less likely to hang up on the saw. Great video as always and the Milling of the wood at the end was really awesome.

Nice! But, when he threw the top, he incorrectly cut the face cut. His bottom cut was further than the top causing it to shelf. Luckily he got the bar out in time.

He did a good job just his last cut hes blown out the top a few things I see wrong that is he is way below cutting above his head with one hand also he cut way above his notch if he was right on his notch the fibers would a never grab the sawlike that he did a great job though. Also break away laniards come in handy just in case

All I know about climbing is what I've learned from your channel, but I was a little surprised to see the climber going up and down on a single line without any safety. Is that normal?

I have no idea why you would not use spikes on a removal?

As sad as it was to see that tree come down, it make no sense whatever to plant them around homes without an acre or so, of clear land around each tree. Seeing the lumber that the tree was made into makes it much better. In the coulda' shoulda' woulda' realm... We visited a friend and his wife in Arcata, California where he was in forestry school. He tried to get me to buy some Northern California bluff land for less than $1,000 an acre. He said we could plant redwoods and let them grow tax freee for forty years, then cut enough to build a house and retire. That was about 45 years ago and back then we barely had gas money to get back to LA County. We lost contact, but I hope he was able to realize that dream.

While taking out that top, climber seems to be cutting well above his head. Very Uncomfortable. Cool vid : )
