HUGE SCANDAL for JAPANESE car manufacturers | Car News
Japan's transport ministry conducted a raid on Toyota's headquarters on Tuesday amidst a growing scandal over faulty safety data.
The world's largest car manufacturer has issued an apology for providing inaccurate or manipulated data for safety certification tests. In 2023, Toyota sold over 11 million passenger vehicles.
This scandal has rocked the Japanese automotive industry, with competitors Honda, Mazda, and Suzuki also admitting to submitting faulty data.
Last December, Toyota-owned Daihatsu shut down all its factories for over a month after admitting to falsifying safety tests. During this period, some cars were sold under the Toyota brand.

Toyota was found guilty of fraud because it submitted test data to Japan's Ministry of Transport( MLIT ) that showed a collision with a chassis weight of 1,800 kg, which is the international standard, when Japanese law requires that the chassis weight be 1,200 kg, in rear-end collision tests, which violated Japanese law.

Blimey! Who'd have thought? Don't know who to trust in the automotive world these days 😬 I don't reckon it'll change the minds of the hardcore Japanese fans, but it makes you wonder how many times stuff like this has happened in the past and never been picked up 🤔 Nice video Jim, thanks for highlighting it 👍🏼

In Europe do cars not go through a separate NCAP testing anyway? I don't think the UK market at least has anything to worry about if that is the case

I agree but after VW group, Daihatsu (Toyota) now Toyota themselves, Honda and the rest I can't feel trust for any. German, Japanese, Chinese, French or whatever this taints the lot for me. Won't affect how I change cars, i.e. to meet my needs and circumstances:- Accessibility, comfort, reasonable reliability, looks, cost and running costs etc.

Great Share !! I believe this will have consequences for sale, but the actual impact depends on the nature of each falsification and how severe they are. I have a Japan citybug myself (Toyota Aygo 1st Gen 2013) and I still trust Toyota and Honda up until 2018 , I haven't read reviews on the newer cars so not sure if they've been fiddled with or not.

It's definitely a huge blow to the reputation of those Japanese manufacturers (including Yamaha motorbike actually). According to one of the news reports, Toyota falsified data during impact tests. Mazda modified the code of the engine control programme during the test for two manufacturing models (ND MX-5 RF & Mazda 2) and changed the impact sensor of airbags to time-triggering during safety test in 3 post-manufacturing models. Mazda explained it was due to miscommunication in the administrative process. It was claimed that Mazda has rerun the tests and confirmed there were no safety issues. Honda falsified results in noise tests in 22 post-manufacturing models. Suzuki was found falsifying results in breaking system tests. The press conferences of Toyota and Mazda got the main spotlight. You will find full length Toyota's conference (1.5 hours) in Japanese on RU-vid. It seemed the scandal had been in investigation last December, including Daihatsu as well.

If you actually look at the detail of this "scandal" its actually a non story in the real world. In fact it looks like they have been over testing their cars in the case of Toyota using dollies that were heavier than needed! In the case of Honda and Mazda it is not even crash safety related at all - engine data related that means nothing in reality. Now I've actually learned more about this, I couldn't care less. Japanese cars will continue to be my default choice.
@DefinitelyNotAGuru
@DefinitelyNotAGuru 3 месяца назад
The story is pretty valid. Car manufacturers cheating tests is a big deal. I couldn’t have given a toss about the results in the VW scandal but huge corporations shouldn’t be fiddling results. I’d still buy a Toyota too.
@jdmguy44
@jdmguy44 3 месяца назад
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru Not saying it isn't a valid story but when you look at what they've done it has no bearing in terms of safety and quality in reality for the very few mostly domestic market cars involved. A scandal for government bureaucrats only me thinks...
