The containership Hyundai Discovery on route from Long Beach to San Francisco in June 2008 rolling in the heavy seas. Amazing how these large vessels can take on such severe met conditions! (Largest roll approx 17secs into video)

How dose one come about getting a job on a ship like this?

You must defeat one of the crew members in a hand to hand battle....only after they surrender, lose consciousnesses, or die can you replace them and hold your position until you are challenged.

@R700ADL -We use interlocking devices called "cones" that are placed in all 4 corners of each container so they can be stacked on top of one another, then we use what are called lashing bars that criss cross each other from one side of vessel to the other. similar to tie down straps but they are bars and a helluva lot stronger.

Always wondered how the hell they kept those containers on the ships during this kind of weather.

@cmcdowall correct... a non-us flagged ship can load cargo at many US ports before going to an international destination as long as they're not actually transferring cargo to be unloaded between US ports.

@R700ADL The bottom containers sits on the deck of the ship,that bottom container is held by twist locks (the same device that holds the box on the bed of the truck) the ones stacked above it are held by thin steel hawsers(1 in each corner of each box) that connect to a ratchet lock system lots of them are washed away or damaged I have seen them squashed like a coke can.I think I have some video on a phone I will try to post it later

That's insane. The Hyundai Discovery is a huge ship that barely fits under the Golden Gate Bridge. It's easily as large as the largest aircraft carrier.

@deckie1985 these two US ports where just two of her many international destinations, her route was from asia to the west coast of US so i presume the cargo onboard was not destined from one US port to another

@ubcs109 In Norway I go on high school called "maritim faget" it is a one year class, after you have finished one year at neither TIP or Electro class (google if you are interrested) Then you will have a apprentice for two years as an engine man or able seaman. You can also choose three years in nautic or as cmcdowall explained for you. Altough we are not guaranteed to get on a ship like this though... I dont think that is an option for you, but thats at least how it works in Norway.

Only empties topside mate. Containers are twist-locked and Lashed to the deck using steel rod. They should stay on deck as long as the Lasher did a proper job.

Well, it is floating on/in the water, resulting in the vessel moving whatever way the water moves.

it all depends where the meta-center is. if M is closer to center of gravity you have slow rolling motion. if M has a bigger distance to G the ship will get quicker in upright position. and then you have FMS which will make it roll more if the fms is too great. it is actually good that ships are rolling slower than quick.

Ive been in stormy seas before and its scary , but nothing like this , watching this gave me an idea to have a "huge" hydraulic moveabble counter weight inside the ships under belly which moves left and right depending on the swey of the ship , computer controlled this will counteract the swey
@beany118118
@beany118118 9 лет назад
That sounds like a great idea, but it would probably cost way too much to have on the ships.
@innovator1998
@innovator1998 9 лет назад
Yes it will cost millions but if one of those containers in this video goes off plunging into the sea that "could" cost millions more
@no0channel0at0all

John Anderson the counter weight would take up too much space on the ship, this idea has be experimented in the past.
