I live in the south of Sweden. Very interesting lecture. I am doing my first hugel, from a big ashtree that fell down in a storm last winter. I cover it with compost, leaves, branches etc Will try mostly this year to grow zucchini, cucumber, onions, and pumpkins. From what you tell I figure it will last many years, and it is a lot bigger than 2 feet tall.

I have been practising a form of hugelculture for years yet had never heard of it. On my half acre I pull out every weed I can, and scythe all the grass I can and dump them into an empty raised bed. After months of adding such weeds etc I cover with about an eight inch layer of soil and plant into it. By the time the food is harvested all those weeds have become compost. This happens within a time frame of about 5 months. By contrast it would take logs years to decompose, though I can see long term benefits in having such beds.

Seems like this is what we see in the ancient civilizations as patterns on the ground.

Thank you for this informative video! I wish I could contact you to critique my first design of a tall 7’ and narrow 4’ vertical hugelkultur edible plants frame on my small cement space in my urban home garden. I wanted to use the many Moringa tree trunks I harvested annually from my garden to build a scaffold but not sure if the scaffold will rot and structure will collapse in a year. I may build a redwood frame to hold up my structure so it fits on my available sunny cement growing space.

I tried it, but raccoons dug up the insect-filled logs in the second year. I guess the logs had to be deeper.

It says ''Pine ok (tannins removed). How do you remove tannins from pines? Do you just debark it, I'm guessing?? Thanks in advance!
@levondurr

I'm not sure what she was referring to exactly. But aged pine and fir would have fewer tannins. I do know hardwood is preferable.

In mine (european) country pine bark is used to prevent weeds and all kind of vegetation. It last 5 years and, after that, the decomposition slowly transform it in compost. An good compost pile can solve the pine bark «problem» in one year. I´m convinced that burning the bark would work too

Great approach but I am personally so sick of hearing about the "water" issue & nobody talks about the weather manipulation by the government?? Why not also look to extract the salt from the ocean & use Wilhelm Reich's invention to make it rain?

I think she is referring to the process of allowing the cover crop roots to decompose in the soil and the nutrients from the roots returning back into the soil.

How does the hugelbed fertilize itself?
@PassportToPimlico
@PassportToPimlico 4 года назад
I think that the key is to bury a whole load of nutrients. Even the logs compost down after 5 years or so. I can envisage most mounds being disassembled after this time and being rebuilt.
@renymullen4582

Natural decomposition returns nutrients to soil........ie natural continous compost at your service year round!

can hugeculture be applied in tropical climate areas?

I believe so. Wood selection is important but I don't see why this wouldn't work anywhere.

@@SolidGoldHedgehog What happened to the "ice age", which scientists in the 90s and early 2000s anounced to be happening right now?! Why was there a period in the medieval, as an example, when the wotldwide overall temperature was higher than now.....without planes, cars and industry?! Do you know that the climate has been changing since our planet has an amosphere?!

@@SolidGoldHedgehogThere isn't proof and considerably change the hypothesis/theory. Only biblical truth is the biblical fact of what happened to earth. No science Data to back up the adjustable hypothesis. In order to be considered scientific, hypotheses are subject to scientific evaluation and must be falsifiable, which means that they are worded in such a way that they can be proven to be incorrect. Outside of science, a theory or guess can also be called a hypothesis. Synonyms of hypothesis include: Theory, Thesis, Proposition, Premise, Assumption, Suggestion, Guess, Supposition.
