@@FlipNVnope leno is an unfunny, backstabbing, dirty chin that did that to the only funny, witty Conan that actually deserved the show which he was promised at first
@@joyandpeacefullaughter5307 You're wrong. His publicist actually told him to cancel the appearance, make up some excuse about going to rehab. He did this on his own because he felt like he owed it to the movie producers. He has said plenty of times that he felt like he "ruined" the movie. Takes balls to do this.
@@HyeBrownIz Of course, and they can also regret the pain they caused others and doing it in the first instance. He owned it though and moved on, had a successful career to this day.
I know this is a year late...but pls tell me why was he fighting for his career here? Edit: I'd say he was at the hight of his career at this time Edit 2: I googled Hugh Grant Sex scandal heh...It appears this had little effect on his career
@@sarac.3568 it was because of this interview that his careet was saved. He admitted to everything and handled the interview brillantly. This was a big scandal at the time.
@@edcampion3998 made even more ironic with the "9 months" movie release (check out the poster), he could not have handled it any better than he did. case in point compare Tiger Woods late piecemeal apology. no contest.
Good god... I feel so bad for this man. When this happened, I was just a kid. But I totally understand where he's coming from now and how obviously ashamed he is with himself and he really shouldn't have been.
I totally believe he was that nervous. Despite him being quick-witted, clever with words, he's generally very honest. Having watched several longer interviews with him, I've concluded he does suffer from low self-esteem and anxiety. In 2016 he admitted he has had panic attacks out of nowhere. It's in the SAG-AFTRA interview on YT. He was making a joke of it (as he typically does), but he was clearly also sad about it. Panic attacks are no joke, you feel like you're gonna die right this moment. Felt really bad for him.
@@champflowahbomb7630 his career didn’t take a hit because he did this interview. This interview saved his career hands down, he was man enough to admit what he did, and face consequences and because of that people immediately forgave him.
Now we get half baked excuses with crocodile tears and a huge PR team behind them. Case in point, Will Smith. If Will had been man enough to go to a talk show the next day or soon thereafter and apologized to Chris and the public maybe it would’ve died down. But now Will’s reputation is a joke.
This was also the episode where Leno took over the ratings lead from Letterman. Prior to this Dave had been the higher rated show but after this Jay took the lead and was dominant in the ratings
totally! Him and Johnny Depp are two of the most awkward people when they are interviewed. And of course this situation made him even more awkward than usual
I know i just wish people would let it go. I mean a lot of people in Hollywood made mistake and came back like nothing ever happened but this guy... just wish people would stop bring it up ans judge him by one mistake!
this is what happens when u keep ur cool and admit like a real man would by saying "i made a mistake" he didnt hide from what he did, and even poked fun of himself. Yea, he definetly saved his career with this interview
It's painful to see him in so much pain.... He's a man who deserves the world.. The most charming... Most handsome and well it doesn't require much explanation.... Love him beyond words... 😭😍
Leno has given Hugh a lot of credit later on. Usually people come with a publicist, pr people and an entourage. Hugh came on his on own and said to Leno that you can ask me straight.
@@STEFAZON500 His people and the producers wanted him to cancel this appearance but he didn't because he felt he owed it to them to apologize. he's said plenty of times that he felt like he "ruined" the movie.
This appearance changed history: Leno was behind Letterman, but this catching lightning in a bottle (and producing a VERY funny hour of tv) turned it all around. Everybody watched! I know I did. And millions said, "This Leno guy is maybe funnier than Dave." And that was that.
Looking at it today it seems almost strange he should be embarrassed about it. But his reaction was understandable in those days. Nowadays I feel it just wouldn't matter. And it shouldn't. Sad how the press - then and now - just revel in tearing people to shreds.
Strangely, I think the "incident " with Divine Brown made people like him more. He wasn't an insecure man in these matters, he was a man of the world. Hold on a minute, he was ACTING in those early films!
It also made him braver. Grant has never hidden from whatever scandal he's had to face and that has allowed him to take the fight to the tabloids. When celebrities were cowering, Grant took on Rupert Murdoch and News of the World to expose the extent of the UK phone hacking scandal.
Why is everyone saying this is painful to watch and they feel sorry for him? You know THIS IS AN ACT! He is playing Charles in Four Weddings and a Funeral here, in real life it is well known that he is closest to Daniel Cleaver in Bridget Jones! He came out to this interview playing the bumbling shy loveable British guy cause he knows women love it and would feel sorry for him - AND IT WORKED!! His career was saved!
Georgina Lewis We don't know him so who's to say if he was genuine or playing a role. Just because he's a movie star does mean he doesn't deserve to be believed. stop being ahole about it because I'm sure you're no saint too
This appearance saved Hugh Grant and put Leno over the top of Letterman. Shame because I’m a die hard Letterman fan ha but kudos to Hugh Grant. He’s had such an amazing career
Story that CNN history of late series added to this was: Grant was probably gonna bail on the Tonight Show appearance. Leno called Grant directly and told him do the show. "Show up, take it on the chin and it will ultimately blow over"... or run and watch feature film career go up in smoke. Grant shows up, goes thru the awkward visit... career survives.
I remember tuning into this way back when and thinking "I wonder what he's going to say". He handled it the right way - I'm not saying he should be excused for his bad behavior because he should not be, but when you're caught doing a bad thing, the best thing to do is to admit that you did something wrong, it was a real d*** move on your part, and now you have to face the consequences which might be to apologize or something else.
@@billycole3565 Still, most people today just block their official social media and dont say anything...and when they do a apology video their never really assume that is their fault and play the victim
@@billycole3565 His people and the producers actually suggested he cancel this appearance. he didn't because he felt he owed it to the movie producers to apologize
I watched this live. He thought for sure the crowd was going to jeer and boo and he was very happy to see the opposite. It was the BEST way to get ahead of the situation and he came out clean - minus Liz Hurley but hey.
Leno's expression at 7:10 is hilarious amd so much fun. There's no one like Leno. No one is as good as him these days. Good natured. Fun. Funny. Pleasant. Ugh. I need that daily fix of culture news and politics...like relive it in a fun way. Sucks.
Got back from Australia last summer.. Instead of focusing on their own numerous country issues, they're still obsessing over the rest of the world's "sensations" - what gives?!?
I LIKED HUGH GRANT 100 TIMES BETTER AFTER THIS. THAT'S THE WAY YOU DO IT. COME OUT AND MAKE JOKES. WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO? I LOVED IT! ALSO, LOVED HUGH WHEN HE SAID "THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE TO NOT USE MOISTURIZER FOR 29 YEARS..." I LOVE YA HUGH...YOU JUST SAY IT LIKE IT IS!
Lol, Hugh didn't feel the slightest bit bad over that, those jokes weren't unintentional. Thirsty middle aged women can't see through it of course, but everyone else can
The funny thing is - is he in a character or what? Acting about the same as in the films... Have to get it to him though. Standing up and face the music.
He really doesn't think he did a bad thing, I hate Hollywood. See everyone clapping 😂. Everyone wanted to hear him say he did something bad because they can't separate nice (movie) high Grant doing "dirty" things.
Not sure I follow your logic... he did do a bad thing, furthermore he owned it by saying he did a a bad thing and not making excuses. What would you have him do instead? As for the clapping audience... if they cant separate 'nice Hugh' from 'high Hugh doing dirty things' - then why would they want to hear him say he did something bad? It would be the opposite surely? Anyhow sounds like BS to me... sorry pal
Who are these weirdos commenting that Hugh looks oh so tortured? He agreed to do this and he’s an actor and had a movie to promote. It’s not this deep thing in the way people making it out to be in the comments.
Why? Why go through all this just for a movie? You don't even realize the hell he went through after this. His flat was burglarized, his phones tapped, his emails hacked, his car broken into, and he and his loved ones were followed 24/7. That went on for 15 years even after the whole scandal. There is a reason Grant became a whistleblower in the UK phone hacking scandal because he was one of their biggest victims.
