My parents and I met Hugh O'Brian many years ago at the height of his Wyatt Earp fame. He was, of course, extremely handsome but also warm, personable and humble. He was what a star should be and now never are. He is wonderful here. At the age of 90, he is warm, personable and humble yet again. True class never ages.
Mr. O'Brian was one of my childhood heroes. Now, knowing he served our country as a U.S. Marine, it is so humbling to see a true patriot. The mold has been broken for men like him. The greatest generation indeed. I hope you are in heaven in your glorified body, OoooRahhhhh!
His brother,Don, married my mother's friend,Jean. I was friends with Jean's son and daughter. He got us tickets to the first Ontario 500 race in 1969. I was 13 years old when we visited him at his house and needless to say,I was completely starstruck. He was a very good guy and I will always remember his kindness.
It's nice that most here are reverent and respectful re Hugh in spite of his aging. (Comes to us all.) he was quite a ladies' man back in the day but aged nobly and graceful with his good works. God bless him and Semper Fidelis!
To those who are critical of how he looks: Just keep living long enough! No one writing now can predict how health issues and life issues will affect their looks and ability to exercise. I really admire his sharp mind at almost 90 years old!
Since he appeared to have a cane in the video, he probably had knee or hip problems, and that is why he was way heavier than even a few years prior to that interview. It also appears his hearing was going out with the headphones and all. He was still sharp as a tack. RIP.
Paulette: .....You are right,...living a long life can...have different effects on people depending on life style, genetics and so forth,........not everyone can age gracefully ,...I just can not believe that this is the same Hugh O'Brian of Wyatt Earp,...I am not critical as to how he looks,....I can just Imagine the changes in life that he must have gone trough to get to this point. I always liked him ,...he's a good actor I wish him well.
If we live long enough we all will age. Most of the time it is not graceful. The body wears down and wears out. People place to much importance on outward appearance instead of inward. He was a nice man who had a generous heart. Hollywood could use more Hugh O'Brians today.
age gets us all in the end but does he have to channel Howard Hughes and be all unkempt and slovenly with his horrendous, crappy uncut hair, nasty unkempt beard and stupid clothes?? he would look 100 percent better if he cut his hakr, shave his beard or at least COMB HIS HAIR for crying out loud.
@@zz424 He was almost 90(!) here and if he wanted to have whatever he wanted to eat and not go to a barber, that was just fine! At least he wasn't wearing a man bun!.God bless him and may he rest in peace.
@@emmylou-y4b yes you are right people look at me strange sometimes I am a Vietnam Vet only 70 but looks older because of all the things that happened to me including cancer of the nose that took most of it away many of the coments here are idiots that never had these problems or even lived a life like Marine O'brian. Let the guy wear what he damn well pleases stop the wining about him get a job......Thank you V.
I will "always" be grateful to Mr O'Brian. He (along with Liz Taylor) visited children in hospitals in the LA area back in 1957. My older sister was dying of leukemia at age 11 and they visited her there. It comforts me to think they went out of their way to do this. I never hear of this happening, today from celebrities with all their riches.
FYI, When "The Shootist", with John Wayne and many notable "A-List" actors were contracted to perform, Hugh O'Brian performed for "No Pay!" He said, (paraphrasing), "It would be an honor!"
I love him very much, he were one of my favorites Westerns!! I watched him every week!! when I were a child!! thank you so much for sharing him!! God Bless you all!!❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🙏🤠
when I first arrived in Vietnam I was assigned to a MACV Advisory team in the Mekong Delta. it was close to Christmas and a lot of Hollywood stars were showing up in all parts of the country. it just happened that Hugh O'Brian came to visit our Advisory team and gave a little demonstration of his gun skills and we all chatted about Hollywood. He never once mentioned that he was a Marine and was the most humble guy I ever met. a really nice experience.
Great story...I have tremendous respect for any vet, esp a ww2 us marine. I never met any ww2 vet who wanted to talk about the war ...extraordinary men who acted ordinary
Hugh, was a Marine 1st, Sempri-Fi!, in which he served his Country, 2nd an amazing handsome Actor! As for him being 90 years old, can anyone speak of his beautiful head of hair? This is a wonderful interview! R.I.P.. Hugh O'Brien! 🙏🎬🙏
Thank you Hugh O'Brian from this Wisconsin Ambassador HOBY WLC '92 attendee. At 16, learning the virtue of the "The Freedom to Choose" in life is priceless. Godspeed.
ambassador from Pennsylvania in 1969. It was one of the great experiences of my life. His acting career was stupendous but only the smallest fraction of what he accomplished afterwards with HOBY
Thanks for the interview, Connie. Hugh O'Brian is one of the great stars of the 1950s and 1960s. What Cooper and Gable were to movies, he was to television. Many people today don't realize what a top star he was when he played Wyatt Earp. I enjoyed the series right from it's premiere season in 1955 and know well how folks loved it. Enjoyed your interview and his stories. He's darn sharp for almost 90!
A very interesting interview. When I got out of the Marine Corps in 1981 I started teaching school. I had an evening job at the Hyatt Hotel on Capitol Hill as a bellman. Hugh O'Brien checked in the hotel one Saturday afternoon and I showed him up to his room. I remember he was really a bowl-legged man and he was kind of short, but a very nice man. We spoke on our way to his room and I mentioned that I had recently discharged out the Marine Corps. He lit up and told me that he was also in the Corps. He then asked me if I knew who was the youngest Marine Corps Drill Instructor in Corp history? When I told him I didn't know, he proudly told me that it was him. I was surprised and pleased. I got his autograph and left him in his room. I will never forget the time I spent with a fellow Marine and a great actor. BTW, they show Wyatt Earp reruns on the TV in this area and it is very interesting to see how realistic Hugh O Brien plays his character and how well written the script is for that time.
@@bladeemerson318 If you watch an old 'What's my line' episode with Hugh O'Brien as the mystery guest, when he shakes hands with Bennett Surf, he is taller than him. Bennett was 6 feet tall. I have watched every episode of WML.
I was an Official U.S. Army war correspondent during the Vietnam War in all of 1967 and 1968, when I served with the 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One) out of it's two main basecamps at Lai Khe and Di-An. I interviewed Hugh O'Brien in Lai Khe when he visited the main Big Red One Base Camp in 1968 with a USO traveling show that entertained the troops. He was a gracious man and gave me a wonderful interview! StocktonRob
oh, I still watch him mostly every day! he's doing so well at 90. and he really still looks like himself, just crusty. he's earned it. love you hugh. and i liked you in the shootist! thanks for the memories
The Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation changed my life. It took a hick kid from Pennsylvania and opened up the world for me. I am forever grateful. All that he asked for a one week experience at the University of Miami that presented the field of oceanography to myself and 49 others was that I write a letter to him for the next 10 years on my birthday letting him know how I was doing.. I did it with joy and it helped keep my life on track. I could not let him down. A TRULY GREAT human being.
@@kathyflorcruz552 Thanks Kathy. It even goes further. When I was teaching high school in the South Bronx (Hugh's inspiration) two of my students were selected for a HOBY scholarship and I had the honor of explaining to them what they were in for. It also changed their lives, with one getting a full ride to Boston College.
hey, he still has all of his hair and he's Alive and Kicking!!! Glad to see one of my favorite old time television characters. Some have already gone on....
My Grandmother Ruth McPherson was almost 93 when she passed away. My mother sobbed in my arms, devastated! She had a hard life, mother and daughter both! They spoiled the dickens out of me but they raised me to be a believer. Grandma taught me about Jesus when I spent the summer with her at age six!
Hugh also had only one fan club with a chapter in each state. I was the Michigan state chairperson around 1960. He liked the members to visit children in the hospital in his name. Nice memories.
It's great to see Hugh again. He has done great good for young students all over the globe and especially here in the U.S. with his foundation. Hugh Charles Krampe (Hugh O'Brian) has always had a great sense of humor and its great to see he has kept it all these years and in his new book.
+Allen Morgan , please take note his name is spelled O'Brian not O'Brien. O'Brian's take great pride that they are the "an" spelling. Just like my spelling. Heck, maybe I'm related.
You know that wasn't his birth name. It was a misspelling of his stage name, a family name he took when he decided Krampe could easily be misspelled and was.
I met the great man many years ago. He had a great impact on my brother's life and mine. His Youth Foundation will continue to have such an impact in his name into the future.
He also was very involved in philanthropy. Saw him with his group once when I was in Boston. Very handsome man as Wyatt Earp. Grateful for his service! Smart man.
When Glenn Ford passed away at 90 he was quite withered down. Hugh looks fantastic here. Great actor, great man. My son was a marine so Semper Fi Sarge and RIP.
I met him Hugh O'Brien on a Pan Am flight leaving Hawaii back in 1982 , just a quick hello and a handshake . He still looks cool under all that camo , lol !
It's great just to someone his age who still with us he served his and when he returned and entertained Allot us. Just pray on live to be as old as him. A great role model!
So glad to get to meet mr Wyatt Earp , a long time ago watcher in my youth. Did not know he was a marine, still has a sweet nature about him and a head full of beautiful locks
God bless Hugh Obrien, and did not know he was a Marine. He seems like a sweet guy and was so handsome in his prime like James Garner. We all get old and have health issues, and like his personality .
Semper Fi-Latin"Always Faithful".My late father,Merlin Joseph Clair was a Marine Veteran of WWII,God bless him.So was the late actor Lee Marvin, who just like my father Merlin, also fought the Japanese during WWII in the Pacific.
@@derlinclaire1778 thank you for your Father's service. Lee Marvin is buried at Arlington with a grave marker like all the rest of the Veterans interned there. He knew who he really was!
I met him at a party maybe 20 years ago and he looked exactly the same as he did on Wyatt Earp. Well maybe not exactly but he looked good. He would also come to the Wyatt Earp Days in Colton California, where the Earp family settled, and he lead the parade along with my step dad, Gene Evans, a Colton native who had the TV show My Friend Flicka, about the same time as the wider series. It was an emotional treat to meet him.
I think he looks great for 90 and it`s so great listening to him ...He could pass for late 70`s... Sure he`s put on weight and he`s gone grey and looks much older but that`s certainly not unusual.. He looks like a great old fisherman full of wisdom with interesting old stories to share.... I can`t believe so many people are making negative comments about his appearance .
In the year 2020, we haven't evolved into a "'nicer" Society, just the opposite. It's easy to see with electronic media just how vicious and nasty people really are.
Hugh O'Brian is gone. As Wyatt Earp he was a screen legend but in real life...he was even bigger. Youngest Marine Corp. Instructor at 17! Dedicated his life to his organization that worked to make young men out of boys. R.I.P. Hugh
sounds like hollyweird BS. Marines were never that hard up for DI's. The real Marines were actually in WW2 and Korea not Cali pretending. ( Although good practice I suppose.) where did they come up with nonsense of going to law school at Yale?
@@grex1242 Sounds like you don't know shit. But that's okay, many people try to knock something good without any proof. "Hollyweird BS"...too funny, man.
I am watching Wyatt Earp right now. He was great in that television program. May he rest in peace. I just found out he has passed away. 😢 I thank him in my heart for his service.
He's gained a lot of weight which isn't healthy but he's reached into his 90s and speaks very well. Seems like he's got a sense of humour and not whining about anything, interesting guy. I wish him well for a long life!!
Just watched What's My Line from 61'and 67'! Funny voices. Watched Twins about a week ago! I am a huge fan of Hugh O'Brian Thank you in Heaven! Your work was fantastic! Met Hugh O'Brian back when I was about 9 in 1967 he was visiting Norfolk Va. My dad was the limousine driver. As I had epilepsy I was with him. Hugh O'Brian just died? This suddens me!
I will be very grateful and blessed to live 91 years. Hopefully I'll know my name and where I live. Enjoyed watching Hugh O'brian , he was one of my favorite actors.
I hope I have his mind and his ability to remember and recall if I am blessed to get older. The hell with how he looks here . Give me my mind and the ability to move around.
Hugh was one of the many men who made damn sure that our best fight over here... was the one that never happened! -Former U.S. Paratrooper Sgt. William ''Rock'' Gilpin 82nd Abn. 1/504 '71---'74
He looks pretty damn good for 75 never mind 90! Most men in their 40s develop a pot belly nowadays! Diet and lots of exercise is the only way to stop it! Semper Fi to a real Marine!
He died a year ago next month. As a kid in high school, I was driving down Carson Street in Carson City, Nevada 1976 and I saw a guy walking down the street in front of The Ormsby House hotel/casino. He caught my eye because it was a very hot day and this guy had on black leather from head to toe. I couldn't believe it and so I looked with amazement to see who it was and it was Huge O'Brian. I had heard rumors that the cast of "The Shootist" was in town to film the movie, but I hadn't given it much thought until there he was just walking down the street.
Ken Johnson oh, yeah, I loved him in that movie! imagine him being a jerk, thats acting. still as handsome as ever... looks and acts wonderfully at 90 too!
Looking at Hugh makes me realize my mortality and I must say it's a little scary~! Wyatt Earp was one of my favorite TV Shows as a young boy and he did a great job giving us boys someone to look up to and be a real man in a normal society. Where did we go wrong~?????
From this former British SAS Trooper, and Malayan Campaign, Vietnam Vet (Australian Army) and Falklands Vet, I salute you Sir. I have been a long time fan of the Life & Legend of Wyatt Earp, the Six Seasons of which I watched and subsequently purchased and still watch to this very day. Rest in Peace Sir. They shall not grow old, as we who are left grow old. Time shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun; and in the morning; WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM. Lest We Forget!
Hugh is a Great man with an Amazing Legacy. He has earned and deserves our respect. For his Military service, and Acting Career, But Most importantly Hugh Founded HOBY. HOBY (The Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program) is an International program that has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of our youth. And a program that I am proud to be a part of.
I love all these comments standing up for this marvelous man. Some people just don’t understand the concept of reverence. Reverence for what someone accomplished in their life, reverence for the beauty they embodied in their younger years, no matter that in their ancient days those great looks are no longer evident. I can say without doubt that if you were sitting up close talking to this man you would see something wonderful in his eyes. End of sermon.
Spencer Tracy was so wonderful but so was Hugh O’Brian, he was so handsome. It’s hard to see you hero’s from your childhood so aged. I know it happens to all of us. You just don’t think of it happening to them.
When I was 13 I had the biggest crush on him. LOL I am not disappointed in his looks. I'm 73 and I don't look anything like I did when I was young. That's just the way life is.
My daughter won the state of WV Hoby and went to the international In Indianapolis. Having this opportunity and the privilege of meeting Hugh was one of the highlights of her life. She just celebrated her 53 rd birthday. We her parents grew up in the 50’s and were avid fans of Wyatt Earp.
