The Hughes Lane Art Walk was born out of a desire to bring more vibrancy and public art to Uptown. In August 2020, the Uptown Waterloo BIA and the City of Waterloo collaborated to create the Art Walk, funded by RTO4's Shareable Moments grant. Eight artists were commissioned to paint the back doors of businesses along King Street, to which Hughes Lane runs parallel (between William and Erb Streets). Submissions were juried based on the quality, aesthetic appeal and connection to participating businesses.
